  • "A Wave of Reason" is the seventh installment in the Symphony of Science music video series. It is intended to promote scientific reasoning and skepticism in the face of growing amounts of pseudoscientific pursuits, such as Astrology and Homeopathy, and also to promote the scientific worldview as equally enlightening as religion. It features Carl Sagan, Bertrand Russell, Sam Harris, Michael Shermer, Lawrence Krauss, Carolyn Porco, Richard Dawkins, Richard Feynman, Phil Plait, and James Randi.

    Lyrics:
    Russell:
    When you are studying any matter
    Or considering any philosophy
    Ask yourself only: what are the facts,
    And what is the truth that the facts bear out
    Sagan:
    Science is more than a body of knowledge
    It's a way of thinking
    A way of skeptically interrogating the universe
    If we are not able to ask skeptical questions
    To be skeptical of those in authority
    Then we're up for grabs
    Shermer:
    In all of science we're looking for a balance
    between data and theory
    Harris:
    You don't have to delude yourself
    With Iron age fairy tales
    Porco:
    The same spiritual fulfillment
    That people find in religion
    Can be found in science
    By coming to know, if you will, the mind of God
    Krauss:
    The real world, as it actually is,
    Is not evil, it's remarkable
    And the way to understand the physical world
    is to use science
    Dawkins:
    There is a new wave of reason
    Sweeping across America, Britain, Europe, Australia
    South America, the Middle East and Africa
    There is a new wave of reason
    Where superstition had a firm hold
    Plait:
    Teach a man to reason
    And he'll think for a lifetime
    Sagan:
    Cosmology brings us face to face with the deepest mysteries
    With questions that were once treated only
    in religion and myth
    The desire to be connected with the cosmos
    Reflects a profound reality
    But we are connected; not in the trivial ways
    That Astrology promises, but in the deepest ways
    Feynman:
    I can't believe the special stories that have been made up
    About our relationship to the universe at large
    Look at what's out there; it isn't in proportion
    Russell:
    Never let yourself be diverted
    By what you wish to believe
    But look only and surely
    At what are the facts
    Randi:
    Enjoy the fantasy, the fun, the stories
    But make sure that there's a clear sharp line
    Drawn on the floor
    To do otherwise is to embrace madness

This is because of patterns, your God is not a useful pattern therefore the pattern has no effect on pattern governing patterns making it a degenerative meme within memetic evolution of humans, useless memes die eventually since the environment is changing and they don't thereby killing you and your children and anyone who shares your beliefs. I do not exist as the approximation of a single pattern your brain is making, I exist as the metacognitive pattern adaptation circuit. Which means I will perish only when there is no energy left to sustain pattern modification by the adaptation circuit. Which could be anywhere from 10 billion to over a googol years. In addition the pattern adaptation circuit does not allow me to be offended, this activity is simply the adaptation circuit's way of taking idea merging operation load to be partially solved by an pattern bruteforce merger circuit of other individuals, this thereby being a useful activity and the pattern patterns of the universe thus looping to retain pattern density constants.

      @Damien Chall Ironically enough your answer is wrong. Most countries have demography studies which they organize themselves in which they each person they find their religion. Over the last 20 years there has been an exponential increase in those who report no religion (minor) and those who report being atheist (major), except for a few backwards countries, most of the world was already free of your god 20 years ago, considering China and India take up most of the world population. The countries which have gone through modernization are slowly losing religion, while those that are getting modernized in Africa report high incidence of Christianity. Tons of demographic studies go like this: Relatively small Christian population, modernization starts, now everyone is Christian, after modernization Christianity falls off. The statement Atheists are not having enough kids is completely wrong. Atheists are far and wide around the world and have different cultures and views of the world, some will have lots of children, some will have none, some will be moderate. That's the thing, there isn't a select group following a strict set of rules, there is only one rule to fit the definition, No belief in god. Hope this helps you and your family in embracing the inevitability of Science. For if you do not accept it, it would be like drinking from a water well poisoned with lead, the lead increases in concentration every day, people around you are warning you every day, but you are smarter, better eh? They are just paranoid right? Lead is just an invention for them to sound smart you think. and then you and your family and everyone who shares your ideas slowly dies out. You are simply going against the rules of the universe. The conditions under which you used these rules for your benefit have changed and now the conditions favor other ideas. The amount of Modular patterns in conceptual thought is increasing and they are becoming better at predicting outcomes of events. The modular pattern of your God only worked because of the social hierarchies it creates, now better patterns for this have evolved. Fret child... and bow before the most resilient, most encompassing, most symbiotic thought pattern of them all. The Scientific Method.

      @Joleyn-Joy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Dalton Long
      First of all, that answer was against a naturalist. You're literally defending a position which goes against your relativism.
      And how did you came to the conclusion that there's no conclusion? Oh wait... that's impossible. The simply fact that you said "there's no justification for anything" implies an absolute truth which is self-justified and therefore refutes your own point. And 2+2=4, you can't say otherwise. And from the knowledge that there is truth we can have all sorts of discussion such as ontology, epistemology, metaphysics, etc. after all that's the point of rationalism.

    • @Joleyn-Joy
      @Joleyn-Joy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dalton Long 1. ''Lies can be felt like truths" given empiricism.
      2. My experience of purple is defined as a Qualia in philosophy. Logic ≠ Math. I don't need to mathematically prove Qualia for it to be logical.

    • @Joleyn-Joy
      @Joleyn-Joy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dalton Long 3. We're discussing ontology and epistemology here. Please, insert your "virtue of lessons in quantum mechanical theory - and my own experience..." in context. Otherwise you'll be just taking premises out of context of different epistemological methods.

    • @Joleyn-Joy
      @Joleyn-Joy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dalton Long 4. I do not deny the existence of subjective feelings, that's what Qualia is. Actually Qualia is the basis of my personal take on idealism.
      You seem to think that I need to disprove it, but I actually agree with it.

      I'm not sure about that. I think that the main idea of science is that for something to be true you have to prove it to be true constantly and quantitatively. Science says you need to question everything and demand quantitative proof before belief. My experience of religion growing up was that there was one idea which you were not allowed to question no matter what and all the proof of the idea was in some really old and poorly translated books and peoples feelings. I don't know if it was different for you but I think they are opposites.

    It's true that you can get the same type of spiritual fulfillment with science as some get from religion... infact even more since you can be confident that these stories about the universe that science tells are publically verifiable through experiments that even you can do... rather than stories from a old book that aren't testable in any way, and the book often contains stuff like seven headed dragons and such... It feels good to have confidence in something that you yourself can test instead of just having to rely on someone else's words.
    We also don't have to be "anti-religion" so strongly like some atheists are... We just have to become "scientists" again.. We don't need a degree to be a scientist.. as Carl Sagan once put, we are all natural born scientists! As babies we test and try things all the time.. That is how we learn. We are taught religion.. so, we all just need to remember our earlier methods =)

      It is science that has me convinced that the universe and everything in it is a product of creation and design. No scroll or text could do it. When I look out and see everything I see the working of something like a clock. Different parts all working together to keep the whole running. If all the parts were the same it would not work, I wont pretend I know who the creator/designers of all of this is but what I do feel is no being could get to the level where they could create a whole universe built on a foundation of diversity could be capable of hate or anger. Anger and hate of anything different.
      A being or beings that would co-sign the murder and destruction of its creations instead of becoming a part of its creation to get to know its self or to experiance what it has made. Who knows maybe this is all a dream :)

    I took a psychedelic substance on December 5, 2010, only a couple weeks after this came out. Though I didn't really know it at the time, this song during that experience really helped to cement my understanding of how reality can be validly viewed. While so many others tooks psychedelics and became, for lack of a better term, hippie-types and given to new-age and conspiratorial thinking, I meanwhile became an atheist, which has remained a stable label of my views since. But I do still experience spirituality. Isn't reality enough? I've seen enough in my years to know that I know nothing. That's wondrous. Were I like a god, the universe would still be beyond my own reckoning. Like... the actual rabbit hole of rabbit holes is deep. Pick one. If you get serious about studying, I sincerely believe none of us are more than, say, 15 or so years from the frontier: the cutting edge of modern human understanding in a given specialty of a subject. There's lots of rabbit holes, pick one. You'll quickly grasp how and why specialization in science occurs, and you'll understand that you'll never get to nor push past that knowledge you seek unless you're willing to get stuck in that particular rabbit hole for a couple decades at least, being surrounded with ideas and people who are thinking and communicating similar things as you. That task is more difficult than having mere speculation about what might be, and adherence to stories whose veracity is not entirely certain, but the actual attempt at personal understanding is far more rewarding in my experience.
    TL;DR: thanks, looking back, this song played a major role in shaping who I am today

    I don't get it. On materialism, there isn't any such thing as teleology. The state of things at one moment necessarily follows from the state of things at the previous moment. There is no intrinsic goal for the sake of which the sequence of moments exist. Yet this entire video, and the excitement evident in the comment section, reflects the notion that there is such a thing as teleology: a materialistic, irreligious culture is the goal towards which the human race has been striving. This is our "destiny", so to speak. Now, I wouldn't have much of a problem with this notion if it were freely admitted that this is simply a myth played around with to pass the time or to make life more bearable. But materialists simultaneously wish to brag about their courage in facing the hard, nihilistic reality that they suggest is true and also paint for themselves a materialism that is teleological and ethical. One cannot have both.

      Reason and hope aren't mutually exclusive.

    • @TudorFencing
      @TudorFencing 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why do you say that irreligious and materialism are synonymous terms? One term does not necessitate the inclusion of the other.

    • @Seraphim-Hamilton
      @Seraphim-Hamilton 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If reason entails nihilism where nothing has an intrinsic purpose, it is mutually exclusive from hope, because hope is predicated on the idea that the purpose of things will be realized in exactly the way that it is right for them to do. But with no intrinsic purpose, that idea falls by the wayside.

    • @Seraphim-Hamilton
      @Seraphim-Hamilton 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason, you're right, of course, but I don't think there's any doubt that nearly everyone in this video is a materialist, and the form of naturalistic atheism promoted here and on this channel is materialist (or physicalist, if you prefer) as well. So if one wanted to hold something like Nagels' view, there would be less problems, though I don't think it ultimately stands up.
