      I have a 98 3/4 Chevy it goes into 4x4 high but does exactly what yours is doing into low, it tries then goes right back to high range. Would that be the same problem most likely?

    You may want to check the vacuum lines to see if any of them need to be replaced. You can also see if there's power going to the actuator with a test light or an ohm meter. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

    You may want to see that when you do put it in 4WD that the front shaft locks into place, and the transfer case is engaging it correctly. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

    The issue could be with one of the forks inside the transfer case not engaging all the way and what you are hearing is gear on gear contact. You will definitely want to bring it in and have it checked out before you use the 4x4 anymore.

    I thought for sure it was my switch in the dash, so I replaced it, but no, the 4wd still didnt work. So it must be the actuator, I replaced that and still no 4wd. I checked the wiring, cleaned the grounds, checked fuses and searched forums and decided to bring it in to get diagnosed ao they could pinpoint the problem. Well they weren't able to pinpoint it and that cost $127.00 , lol. So i decided to replace the transfer case motor and used this video. It was very helpful. I didn't have to remove u joint bearing, the electrical connections were kinda hard to unhook. I had to manually put transfer case in nuetral to line up with new motor. I'm just a you tube mechanic so this was a bit challenging. I have no impact wrenches or means to raise vehicle, so it was tight under there. Anyway, I did it and it worked! I'm very happy. Thanks!

    Thanks for the video. My local professional wanted $500 for the motor, your site has it
    for ~$163. They also wanted 3 hours in labor costs and your video is 15 minutes, but with fast forwarding of the movie, you might have had the truck on the lift for 45 minutes. Unfortunately it is hard to find an honest mechanic these days.

    I have a 1990 Chevy 2500 and I went to turn my 4x4 on which is on the ground and the light never turned on and it still is 2 wheels drive. Any advice I should look for or do to fix it?
    You may want to check the fuse on that circuit to see if it's blown and needs to be replaced. If that's okay, you may want to test the power going to the switch, with a test light or an ohm meter.
    If there's power going to the switch and none coming out of the switch when it is pressed, you may have a bad switch. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

    Since you're dropping the front drive shaft, it'd be a good time to switch out the u-joints if they haven't been done before. I've done my rear about 3 or 4 times in my 04 silverado but never the front. Maybe on a rainy day. Thanks for the video. I may replace my motor this summer or just pick up a spare just in case.

    Thank you for the informative video but I would certainly clean the driveshaft yoke with a solvent after dropping it on the dirty, rusted crossmember. I would also solvent clean the U-joint stub. Depending on the mileage of the vehicle I would tend to want to solvent clean all of the grease out of both U-joint caps and repack the bearings. Not too much work since it's all apart already. My truck was giving erratic 4HI to LO shifts for about a year and now it's stuck in low so I think it's time.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It could be either the switch, transfer case shift motor or the physical transfer case is broken. You might want to bring it to someone to have them diagnose the issue for you.

    just got a 2004 GMC Yukon the driveshaft hooked on the transfer case shift motor , the 4 button selector switch does not light up at all
    the works fine in 2WD still no light showing - i assume the problem is the TC shift motor wires have a issue
    i need to check all the fuses and clean frame & body grounds 1st - i bought the 5.3 Yukon in this condition , it has a very nice body & interior

    Hey Guys, so I live in Calgary Alberta......With this said, our winters get frigidly cold -20C common......my 4wd service comes on/fuse blows/lights on selector switch goes out. Nothing works...found a write up - not sure if its from GM directly. But it states, if your 20amp ATC fuse keeps blowing, but Encoder @ T-case works......front diff actuator works. You're getting get grounds.....good voltage at connectors....( Bench test front actuator ) and it works.......and there is no code for TCCM ( Transfer Case Control Module ) ....it is the 1640 connection - they used 18 gauge wire from factory but during colder than normal ambient temps - it will spike in amps and blow the fuse....The easy fix is replace with 25amp fuse. OR replace the Orange wire - with 16Awg. DONT GO SPLURGE ON PARTS BEFORE YOU DO ALL YOUR CHECKS!!!!

    I was stuck in 4HI when mine stopped working. Had to replace 4x4 shift motor (mates with transfer case), 4x4 module (signaled by clicking sound under glove compartment in passenger wall) , and then the lights just blinked and I had to replace the 4x4 actuator (under the battery)
    .
    moral of the story... don't wait to fix it.

    Great video! I just got my 02 Silverado. When I turn very sharp, I hear a rubbing/grinding noise, and sometimes the truck bounces a little. I can hear my shift motor working seemingly normal when I shift into 4-Hi. When I drive in 4-Hi I it feels a bit rough and like there's a rubbing/grinding noise. I cannot shift into 4-Lo. Everything else about the truck seems great! My uncle, who lives in a different city and used to be a mechanic, thinks like the turning issue may be 4x4 related. Thoughts?

    Hi there you showed how to test the motor while its attached to the truck, I have a 2001 olds bravada that doesn't have any 4wd switches, it is stuck in 4wd and I'm thinking it's the encoder motor. There isn't any way to test this one is there? I've been told there isn't any way to test it when it's not attached to the transfer case either or it will cause permanent damage to the motor.Fluid is perfect no blown fuses and no lights illuminated on the dash.

    I have a 2001 GMC Yukon XL and I'm having trouble figuring out if I need an actuator or replace transmission. I put it in gear and it will not move in reverse or forward. The first time it did it, I let it sit for a few hours and it moved about 35 feet then it wouldn't accelerate no more. When in gear it just idles and will not go. Please give me a plan of action.

    Great Videos. I have a problem similar to this. 05 Sierra 215k miles. My buttons have been working off and on for a few months. Today, when working and going at highway speed the transfew case shifted into neutral on its on and I lost all power to wheels. Pressed Auto 4WD, power returned and got home. Tried again later and same thing happened. Transfer case shift motor? 4WD Axle Actuator? Software issues? Thanks for your time

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for the kind words regarding our videos. Given what you're describing I would lean more towards the transfer case shift motor needing to be replaced, however it's impossible to be certain of that without a proper diagnosis. Have the vehicle looked at to see if this is the part that needs to be replaced as the last thing you want to do is buy unnecessary parts and in turn perform unnecessary repairs to the vehicle if not needed. Thank you again, and have a great day!

    I rebuild my 2005 Tahoe z71 transfer case np246 np8 because it had a pump knock problem and create a hole in the rear housing. Now my problem is that it won’t shift in any of the 4wd modes like in the video and the electronic encoder is making the same noise. I also was thinking that maybe that tab on the main output shaft under the clutch pack was installed incorrectly by the shift fork, but this seems exactly what my truck is doing. Could that tab be an issue for why the tc won’t engage in any other gear besides 2wd. The truck runs it’s just when I try to put in any 4wd it blinks and goes back to 2high.

    i have a 2003 chevy 2500hd and my actuator is good and it down shifts the gear ratio when put in 4lo and 4hi but i don't have power to the front wheels what could cause this.

    I have a 98 chevy Z71. It has the push button selector, when i go to engage or disengage it will make a racket like it's hitting hard. Yes it goes into all selections. Also, what gear should the trans be in when switching in and out of 4X4? Can u give me a clue where to start to resolve this. Thanks!!!

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be shift on the fly, meaning you may need to be moving at least 10 miles an hour for the 4WD to engage. You may want to also check the owners manual, as it should indicate the proper shifting procedure. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

    My 2005 Silverado hasn't been able to go into 4wd low for a few months now. Today while driving in 2wd every time I went down a long hill where it was essentially coasting the transfer case was totally disengaging as if my transmission was in neutral. Stopping and cycling from 4wd back to 2wd fixed it each time with a super loud clunk. Is the encoder motor the likely culprit for both the new prob plus the old one of no 4wd low?

    I bought a truck they said the previous owner pulled the 4x4 out does that mean they prolly pulles the whole transfer case out

  • @wmkess
    @wmkess 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if the transfer case will go into 4wd high no problem but fail to engage 4wd low? My 2005 Silverado 1500 does this now. I can hear a loud clunk, like it typically made in the past when it engages into low, but it doesn't engage and then it clunks again like it is giving it a second shot. It has been doing this even after multiple restarts and trying it at a stand still and a slow roll (1-3 mph like the manual states) and always in neutral.

    hi, i have a 2006 chevrolet suburban 1500 and my problem is this, 4x4 switch lights turn on and then off, just the red light on neutral is on, and nothing works not even a sound, i have the switch changed and the 4x4 shift motor also, as you did on the video, first when i started the truck worked fine for the first five minutes and then it stopped working again, do you have any recomendation? please thanks for your time,

      You may want to inspect the wiring going to the shift motor just to make sure that there's not a frayed wire or something which may be causing this to happen. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

    i have an 05 silverado and having trouble with my 4wd. service 4wd comes up on cluster and stays there, no lights on the switch because the fuse blows. Thinking its the transfer case motor but not sure. Was having trouble earlier trying to get her in 4wd but after some time she would eventuallly go in, but now no dice. Think the motor is my probem? how much does one usually go for, theres a napa here in town that might have them, thanks.

    I recently had my transmission rebuilt on my 2001 S10 4×4, now my 4×4 does not work, I changed the motor switch thinking it was the issue, I can hear it changing but will not engage the trnsfer case, I added 1 addition quart of transmission fluid just to be on the safe side that it may need more, do I need to add more fluid. What could be the issue, the tensfer case is not damged..

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may want to check the dipstick on the transmission to make sure that it's not over filled. That system also runs off of vacuum, check all of the vacuum lines in the engine compartment to see if any of them are broke, or if there's a vacuum leak. There's an actuator that that tends to fail on that truck too. Here's a video that will show you what to look for. Hope this helps you out. the nub that sticks out of the transfer case doesnt want to line up with the female part on the shift motor for my 01 silverado, how do i line it up? Also if i just plug in the new shift motor without installing it to the transfer case, will the motor spin when I press the 4x4 buttons? I bought a new shift motor and pluged it in, didnt bolt it up, and the motor is just buzzing and not turning. its brand new...defective unit?

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +glamisfanatic You will want to plug the encoder motor in first and set it to what the transfer case is set to. So if the vehicle is in 2WD then you need to set it to 2WD first. 1aauto.com

    hi my name is lisa, I just bought a 2000 s-10 chevy blazer, it is a 4x4 4wd also, the problem that I have it, I never had an 4x4 vechicle/suv. all the lights were flashing and if I get it over 30mph it will run right, under 20 mph it will hesitate and I have to force it to make go over 30. I had a lot of different answers saying it was the transmission, computer brain, and now the catalac converter could be stopped up. I don't know what the real problem is, can you please help me to find a better solution to this problem. Thanks Lisa
