    Interesting. Even though I am an old retired lady, and I haven't lived on a farm in many decades I find your videos very entertaining. I love it when your kids pop up from time to time.

      I'm 61 and I, too, haven't been on a farm in decades. I totally agree with you that these videos are entertaining. I also find them a great distraction from our daily news. I find Danny, the youngest, to be the most enjoyable to watch. The way he sticks to his dad tells me there is a future farmer growing up in that family! Finally, I was born in Detroit and lived for several years in the Marshall / Battle Creek area. Simpler days.

      I am a retired little old lady one state to the left. I always laugh that when anybody asks someone from MI, WI, or ME where do we live in our state, we can simply hold up our palm and point. I like this channel because it gives me some idea how my Scandinavian ancestors lived.

    Those garden tools are so cool. They look just like the ones my grandpa had for his garden when I was a kid. He always had a big garden as did we. There were seven kids in my family so a big garden was a must. I hope to find good vintage versions of these that I can use. If I can't it is always good to know an alternate source for gardening tools. Thank you so much for showing these.

    • @gelwood99
      @gelwood99 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because of the metal used in the vintage models, they will be heavier than the newer ones. I have several of my grandfathers and they are hard to use because they are heavy and unwieldy. I am 63 so that may be why I don't care for them as much because I don't have the strength or mobility of a younger person.

    I have a similar 4 row seeder from Johnnys seeds in Maine USA there were similar problems and even the noise, The problems were fixed by removing the axle and very lightly sanding (with emery cloth, 400 grit) the inside of the holes where the axle fits in. Also Very lightly sanding the axle going around the axle not from end to end. The tabs on the bottom each hopper were rubbing the axle which made the noise and caused most of the drag. These tabs can be very gently adjusted so they didn't rub on the axle, I used a piece of cloth on the tabs to avoid making marks and a pair of pliers for greater control. After these adjustments my seeder works very well.

    You should look into the Earthway Precision Garden Seeder Model-1001-B. I have been using one for several years and am very happy with it. You can change the different sized seed plates in less than 30 seconds. The seed plates and the seed hopper is only made of plastic but I have not had any issues with it. You can adjust the depth of the seed placement, and it drags a chain behind the row that covers the seeds as you go.

    The attachments for the weeder looks to be attached with bolts. Go to your tractor supplier and pick up a few locking pins that will fit in the holes, that way you can change between the tools in seconds without any tools.

    I very much enjoy your videos. And I'm saving up so that I might come back to Europe and meet you and your farm. I enjoyed my experience in the early 70s while stationed in Germany. But I think there's several European countries that are doing devastating harm to their individual countries. I don't mean to be political. And I am definitely not politically correct. We're kind and friendly and helpful but most importantly realistic about what's happening in that part of the world. You have a beautiful farm and family and I very much enjoy your videos and knowledge. Everybody should understand that we learn everyday and can't say we know everything about everything. God bless you and your family. And how about making some T-shirts

    Just got my cultivator and seeder delivered and i'm really impressed with the build quality. I wish the knifes of cultivator were less flimsy as i believe any friction could lead to unnecessary wear but i think i can solve this by putting a piece of sheet metal between the frames.
    I really hope it can let me stay on top of weeds for my garlic field this year. I'ts the lowest priority side project so it always suffers.
    Interestingly i had checked the seller's website when i was looking for a tractor - pulled garlic planter, but i didn't notice they were selling stuff like this aswell.
    So thanks for this review, it was very helpful.

    you can twist the handle so you dont have to twist your body while walking. These seeders work best holding it level with the top of the seeder being a reference. You have to close the row behind it because it doesnt cover the seed. Which is nice to verify the seed is placed.

  • @dawsie

    😹😹I love it, I have spent the summer putting seeds into tissue paper(toilet rolls) I make 1 meter lengths at a time pulling apart the layers as I buy a good quality non-bleached non scented stuff😹😹 and dampen the tissue paper place one seed at a time at the distance needed and then fold over the tissue paper let it dry on a rack once dry I fold up ready to be planted into the beds in the spring but after seeing you using that new seeder I loved how easy it was to change out the feeder and I noticed that how easy for you to run it over the ground.🙀🤗
    Have you thought of modifying the German made seeder by putting new wheels on it that are bigger, sorry I am a fan of modifying something if it don’t work the way I want.☺️😹
    I loved the baby hoe that you used for weeding the garlic, it looks like it would be also great for the small gardener like me to also turn over the garden beds. I will have to see if I can get it here in Australia if not I will see if my Uncle can get it for me and send it 😹😹
    I only found your TH-cam this morning and have been vegging out on some of your past videos and I love your approach to sustainable farming it’s like stepping back into a time warp before all the stupid practise that have been used in the past 60-70 years
    I have noticed a lot of the younger farmers today have been going back to the old way of farming and not focusing on one or two types but focusing on the whole as one unit like you have been doing. And the results are good.
    I would love to have chickens but sadly I am allergic to their droppings and every time I go near it I brake out in hives not a pretty look that’s for sure. And being rugged up to the tees so I can work with the ground is not much fun so I have to look at other options like ducks or geese lol but I will be testing out one problem first at a friends farm as they have both and help clean out the barn area where the birds sleep and live during the colder months and if no reaction in the first 10 minutes then I will go,ahead with them 😹😹😹 yep it takes only 5-10 minutes for me to break out in hives from chickens even my next door neighbour had to move his hen house to the other side of his yard because of the dust blow off that comes my way 🙄😳🙄😳
    I was sorry to hear about Sally but my Aunt who breeds Shetland Sheep she has done the same thing and a good leader is the one who answers to her calls as in the case with you and those gorges girls that you have 🤗🤗🤗

      Always something, isn't it? You keep up with everything, you ought to get a "special trophy" just for making it through with that sore elbow. Hopefully, you won't have a need to use crutches; that can really make your elbow "sing". From my experience, a support band above and below while you are working keeps the area from over working. Good luck...

    I am sure that you could fix the multi seeder by pulling the axle out and do some sanding or whatever to make it run smoother.
    Put bigger wheels on it and that would help with the problem as well, I am sure from watching your videos that you could
    figure something out.

    • @simeonandalex

      The thing is that it will get hard to turn as soon as some dust/sand/dirt gets in there. Also, putting on bigger wheels will elevate it above the soil so that the seeds don't fall in to the right depth...

    The seeder looks nice, but I prefer the Jang seeder. It does a great job with small seeds and set up time is a fraction of the time.

      They build those kind of seeders as well. You can't compare the two different products. This one costs $30 and is ment to be simpler.

    How does using this 'tiller' relate to you claiming your bed to be "no dig"? That's a fair bit of intrusion / digging you're doing right there with the weeding!

    • @szymonmelechita7689
      @szymonmelechita7689 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that by 'no dig' people mean they do not turn the ground (after season/after the crop) - you have to dig for example to get the root plants.

    Is it possible to change to put larger wheels on the multi-row seeder ?
    When I first saw it last year I thought the wheels were too small.
    It is just like a tractor that has large rear wheels for ability to roll over rough ground.
    I know that it is a bother to modify it but then you would have a multi row seeder.

    • @simeonandalex
      @simeonandalex  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think you could put bigger wheels on it because the seeder wouldn't reach the soil anymore.

    • @donaldmiller8629
      @donaldmiller8629 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have either seeder in my hands so I can not see how they actually function. You can not make the multi row seeder function like the large wheeled single row seeder ?

    Hi, what do you say now about this seeder after some use? I want to buy a seeder just can't make up my mind, the jang seeder seems the best but £900 is a bit too expensive, next would be the earthway or pannongep.hu/en/vetogepek/, (looks a bit too plastic) they have some wheeled hoes aswell that look good.

    There was deep knowledge of organic farming in pre-war Europe. It would
    be good to get some knowledge out of Eastern Europe, Germany and elsewhere.
    Where traditional farming was at least partially kept in use.

    • @simeonandalex
      @simeonandalex  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure why you think that. I can’t think of a way to use this that gives you more control over the tool. Pulling is much more acurate than pushing it I think. It was very ergonomic as well.

    How much did the seeder cost?

  • @johncraftenworth7847
    @johncraftenworth7847 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The best seeder for small seeds is the Jang seeder designed by the communist North Koreans, to them such a planter and style of farming is literally life or death...and hence, they designed the best planter in the world for this style of farming. The best hand tools for weeding and soil work are made by the Dutch and Swiss and Japanese, not the germans!! Dutch are just crazy about gardening evidently. If you want a seeder for large seeds, well Jang makes one of those too, I haven't tried it, and I'm sure it's pricey. Small seeds are really the trick so that's why I invested in the expensive jang seeder. I own the Hoss Tools planter attachment for their wheel hoe which works pretty good for large seeds (not for small). And Hoss now has a standalone seeder with a double disc furrower to dig the planting hole which is even better than their wheel hoe seeder attachment. If you have nicely groomed and packed beds, the wheel hoe seeder attachment works pretty good, if not get their standalone seeder which can handle rougher conditions.

    • @simeonandalex
      @simeonandalex  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This company makes seeder equivalent to the Jang seeder. This is a different product for 1/10 of the price.

    • @johncraftenworth7847
      @johncraftenworth7847 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well someone needs to make a review/comparison between these two comparible seeders, the jang has many reviews and youtube videos produced by market gardeners. But yes, this seeder looks much better and smoother than your german seeder. I always thought that german seeder looked cheap, tinny, and awkward/clunky movement and operation!
