I've hung out with both Wooten Brothers! At Abdula's ice cream shop in Newport News Viginia! --Abdula was a great early influence with both brothers and assisted their rise out of the inner-city. I was able to sit in a few times during improvisation there - it was very small and our shop was right beside Abdula's. Victor and Roy Wootan - invited me to see Bella flek and the flektones in concert norfolk, virginia! They are so so awesome!!! i'm so blessed to have had that opportunity and know it was God's will! You are so amazing Ellen! Don't loose the love of what you are doing!

What was a really enlightening experience for me was playing in a Balinese gamelan group. In many ways their approach to music is like a polar opposite of ours. They don’t have sheet music, they don’t practice alone at home, they don’t learn a new song little piece by little piece but preferably all the way through. Learning a new piece means the teacher plays it a couple of times and then you have to remember it, the real good guys can remember entire pieces on first listen. There is no analytics like “the piece is in this scale and has this time signature and this form”, you just play and try to remember it as fast as possible
so you don’t get a lot of angry looks and head shaking for playing the wrong notes.
I still struggle with it, I am so used to going home and learning the piece bit by bit with a recording, while the real guys can learn and remember an entire piece by just hearing it a couple of times. The memorizing skills of these guys is so much better developed. Like our teacher has hundreds of songs memorized, all the different parts for all instruments included. And we are not talking formulaic cookie cutter stuff but intricate complex music, most of those pieces are 8-15 minutes long for like 10+ instruments. We really suck at that because we barely train that skill and rely on sheet music and recordings.

When you watch and listen to great musicians like Victor, you are reminded of the intellect behind the heart. So many of these legends are frighteningly intelligent. Kudos to you for what is arguably one of the finest examples of true parenting. There are so many 9-year-olds who don't even have a grasp of how to form a complete sentence with proper grammar and syntax and, may say proper words instead of profane expletives... And the proof is Miss Ellen herself.. The knowledge she is reaping and retaining and utilizing is reflected in Winston Churchill's words, " knowledge is the only instrument of production that is not subject to diminishing returns.". Ms. Ellen's, smile and laugh ilarr infectious and it is a true joy to watch this talent. Blossom!

The Ellen's Groove video was the first I'd really seen Ellen play (besides the occasional Instagram short that popped up in my feed). And when I saw that first video on TH-cam I posted a comment to the effect that Ellen should have her father find her a really great teacher or two to study with, to advance her obvious talents even more. Little did I know E is already getting practice tips from Victor Wooten! And my goodness, the speed with which she picked up on that scales exercise and was then able to synchronize it perfectly with the song so easily is just phenomenal! Keep on practicing, Ellen. We're cheering for you! 👏❤🤙

I wish my parents had been such great teachers and so creative and patient. For me it was always "you have to", "do it like this" and then I was shown it 2-3 times and if I couldn't do it, then I got hit on the ass with a hazelnut rod. I wanted to learn keyboards or drums and then I had to learn zither or accordion and I hated it because I love rock music and not bavarian volk music. I was never allowed to do what I wanted, I just always had to function. It was a horrible childhood for that matter. Thank God there were good times too. Later I did what I wanted and learned drums and keyboard myself. :) I really enjoy watching how Ellens dad teaches here, it's fun and works very well.

True, Music is in her DNA. Watching Ellen and practicing along side with her as she grows will be a serious benefit in any one's life who wants to grow in bass play.

I cannot say just how much I absolutely love this!! Videos like this give me so much joy and hope for the future of this world. You both do such a fantastic job together as she is learning and playing. Plus, hearing the wise words of Victor Wooten is absolutely warming. As one who has been playing bass for 22 years I am thrilled to see this beautiful content and her joy in what she is learning. Music is beautiful, transporting, and one of the most powerful forces in the world. Keep learning! These videos remind me of old PBS videos I use to watch back when I was kid about kids learning music. Keep on!! You are doing incredible!!!

Mr. Wooten keeps it real. Music is what music is. It is not boring - over & over & over. Music is enjoyable and even fun. It has color and it has emotion. If you can keep the joy, you will certainly improve. Miss Ellen is a perfect example of that!
MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL! (and more cake!)

Thanks so much for allowing us to peek in! Any musician can identify with trying to make practice engrossing and fun. For me this video really shows the importance of a great instructor.

You know Ellen I don't think if you remember how I said I liked you especially per age and talent. I said just as Mr. Victor Wooton did don't forget to be a kid go out play take a break but practice is very important too. I don't play music never had the knack oh I played the Trombone for awhile in grade school. Always to be liked my Dad a mechanic own my own gas service station came close was a number manager of a Shell gas service station. Ended back at my dads then a car dealership to building my own service center but always took time out or off to play. Then when I came back I was fresh seemed to enjoy my work helping others as you will enjoy playing pleasing others with your music you're you're a very talented little girl have wonderful Dad , mother family keep one keep on your number #1 fan forever
