My Interview With Victor Wooten | The Practice Room #83

  • Victor Wooten is arguably one of the most important voices not just in bass guitar, but in modern music. From his incredibly early beginnings, surrounded by a family of musical brothers who mentored and taught him, to worldwide success in bands like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and the all-star bass trio SMV with Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller, the journey has been action packed.
Add to that, a stellar career as a composer and band leader, with 11 solo albums to his name, and you can start to build a picture of someone who lives and breathes music day in, and day out. But you would still only have half the picture. Now in its 21st year, Vix Camps host bass players and musicians from around the world, in one of the most successful music camps in history. With legendary guest teachers, live performances, and a hugely popular nature awareness component, Victor has cemented himself in history as a pioneer of music education, not only with his camps, but with best selling books, instructional videos, and a demand for him the world over as a clinician, and guest lecturer at the worlds most prestigious teaching venues.
I am hugely proud to call him a friend, a colleague, and on some level a mentor through learning so much from his music over the years. I'm lucky enough to be able to present this interview for you, and give you a look into his world, his process, how he's dealing with being forced off the road like the rest of the world right now, and what his plans are for the future.

This was a great interview, I learned so much about Victor, I have seen lots of his interviews before, watched his DVD’s, listened to his music, and read his book, but a conversation between friends about topics much more interesting than technique has really been transcending! Thank you both!

When I first saw Victor (with Bela Fleck) circa 1993, he inspired me to push myself as a bassist. But over the past 6 or 7 years, I've honestly found that he inspires me more to be a good human being. Really love this guy. Thanks for this great interview, Janek!

Love listening to wonderful thoughtful people talking openly. Two choice quotes/paraphrases that stuck with me:
    1. "My brothers always held me higher up than them, which is why you know my name and not theirs"
    2. "Only a small part of the body needs to get cancer before the entire body dies. How much cancer can music or society take before it dies?"

Victor is the most kind-hearted human being out there! So much inspiration. Much Love!
Sucks for the focal dystonia problem! I wish for a cure! Found out about it from the Beato interview.
Had noticed Victor playing became "kind sloppy" the last years, thought that was due to aging but at the end this was the cause. Wish him and his family all the best. Touring musician sure struggle, especially now days with covid thing and not paid as much as they should. Great interview Janek!

The things Mr.Wooton has to say and has said in his book are some of the things that I abide by in my life. Not just as a musician but also as a person.
    Thank you for this.

His book changed my life. I remember meeting him and Steve Bailey at the first JEN conference in Kentucky (after the previous organization went bankrupt I think). So nice, so warm and friendly.
