Been using slick sand since you put me on to this stuff a couple of years ago and I love it! I recently got a bambulab and was curious about how little sanding I could get away with. This video is perfect!
It is a nice idea for weathered or beaten up props but for people who would prefer pristine looking things, there were really needs to be sanding. @4:45 the back of the helmet shows apparent under extrusion and welded support damage from the print itself. Filler alone won't help that.
@@thomaswiley666 it’s going to vary model to model, considering the complexity of the model in the rear piece with no sanding it came out great. As stated this isn’t a say all do all method just an option for those who don’t want to sand as much but still want good results with less effort.
I found your channel a couple years back now as a newbie looking for help on printing silk pla and not finding hardly ANY content on specifically that filament. You’ve been such a help in inspiring and influencing new and creative ways to attack projects, so I thank you for your work you’ve shared with our little 3D printing community DW. My next investment will be a larger format printer, probably the sv08, that’ll allow me to print masks and fun stuff like that. Hopefully I can get one at some point if they have a big sale of 20-25% off
@@Darkwingdad looking forward to it buddy! I’m on the ender3v3 SE right now so I haven’t delved into any klipper yet. I know it’s going to a beast to learn but it’ll be fun! Do you have any thoughts on the K2 coming up on release? My next printer, I want it all. Multi color/idex/tool changer, whatever it takes. Supports engineering filament, specifically ASA and CF filled. Large volume printing as well.
This was great. I do have a question about slick sand or an alternative. I have a compressor and 2 lvlp guns. In general I try to use water based paints because I’m not a huge fan of spraying acetone and other solvents. Yeah, I know it takes longer 😢. In any case do you know of any high build primers like slick sand that can be thinned with water for use with a hvlp/lvlp gun? Thanks as always man. Your vid’s have helped me a ton in making great looking functional prints.
@@Darkwingdad Thanks. I hadn't seen that one. I'll give it a shot. Do you think it'll spray though? I'm doing things like wall mounted shaped bookshelves (e.g. clouds and butterflies) that have about 2 to 4 sqft of area. Thanks again!
Another great video. Love your videos. A buddy of mine did a Captain Rex and I sent him to your channel. He asked me why, and I said DWD is a guy who gives tips and tricks for the average everyday cosplayer like us. I have used his methods and they work great, check him out. He did, and now he watches all your videos. Keep up the awesome work!
Very Nice! To be honest I haven't really sanded in months lol I have been making a lot of smaller projects with my Bambu A1s but I do have one giant project and a couple cool side projects. I have been posting shorts on them if you ever want to check them out!
@Darkwingdad I'm trying to get myself on TH-cam along with my fledgling 3d printing business here in DFW. So, I noticed you have a K1 Max. Do you like it, and have you done any ABS with it? I have been debating picking one up or just buying a P1S. MAX, though, has a bigger build plate
It would literally take me a month to accomplish this project - a week of it being just sanding and filling. However, the grunge finish is a bit more forgiving than attempting a perfect high gloss finish. I'm always concerned about bonding and don't want to see stuff chipping off over time, which prettymuch forces me to do a complete sanding and a glazing putty fill before any coatings are applied. Does the primer actually chemically bond to the plastic and have you tried a scratch test and confirmed the bond?
@@josephpk4878 it’s a 2k primer, meant to bond the metal, it has solvents in it penetrate the substrates pores and anchor in. Keep in mind we also used acetone as a reducer so that helps bond to plastic too. Been using this product in the auto restoration scene for 15 years, it’s great!

I’m gonna do another one more in-depth with weathering and more & show alternative polyester sprays that work great too
