The Island of missing trees was one of my favourite reads of the year so far. In terms of content I enjoy tops and flops videos but your content is always engaging, interesting and enjoyable 📚
My current favorite smaller booktubers are Soggy Expat Book Nerd, CriminOlly, Bookish Topics, and Ms Reads A Lot. Each one is unique and fun. I also love The History Shelf, but she reads mostly nonfiction history books. So, if you aren't into that, it would be a bit of a mismatch.
Can’t wait for Jess Kidd’s next book! I love everything by her. Also, I whole-heartedly agree that we need to talk more about grief. It’s time to normalize an experience everyone shares at some point.
I read The Island of Missing Trees after hearing you gush over it. It is also my favourite book of the year so, it's amazing. Thank you for recommending it. Also love the channel x
📚 There’s always at least one book I have to buy after watching your videos! Here’s a video request: your favorite audiobooks… I’m a mom to a toddler 😅 and audiobooks are pretty much my only way of reading these days ☺️
I don’t really do audiobooks so it probably wouldn’t be a very good video. I had a big phase in 2020 and then less so in 2021 and don’t think I’ve listened to one in 2022.
Great answers! I really love seeing people actually interacting with their bookshelves, pully off their TBR, reading the blurbs/shopping their own shelves etc but I just don't see that often!
It's also great when people with larger followings ask their viewers for recommendations of newer/smaller channels because we get to peep the comments and follow them too! Hope you have a great off-grid travel experience.
Thanks for a lovely video Simon. Fav books this year so far are: The Sentence by Louse Erdrich, Greenbanks by Dorothy Whipple; Clara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, Grown Ups by Marion Keyes, The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. A couple of TH-cam channels I really enjoy are Literature Science Alliance and Tori Morrow. They are both mostly, but not completely SciFi and Fantasy, so perhaps not for you, but am sharing because it’s just to much fun to hear them talk about books they love.
Great answers Simon. I think a seasonal vlog would be interesting. Books that evoke the emotions (good and bad) and landscape of the different seasons maybe as opposed to the time they were released 📚
📚 I’m half way through Hare House, I picked it up from the library today on whim after hearing you mention it. I had no idea what to expect from it and didn’t even know the premise. Im now half way through it as I haven’t been able to put it down.
📚thanks for this Simon, really enjoyed it. Currently reading Summerwater by Sarah Moss, wasn’t too sure what I thought after first 50 pages, but now enjoying. Would love to read along with you and your Mum for Booker short list.
Best books read so far this year The Colony by Audrey Magee Devotion by Hannah Kent Foster by Claire Keegan Half way through audio of Young Mungo and it will be in my top five of 2022.
Loving saucy Simon. I would love to see your thought on short story collections. After enjoying Cursed Bunny it’s quirkiness with deeper meanings was just phenomenal. Have a great 16 weeks away. 📖📚📕
We all need a bit of saucy now and again. I’ve done very badly with short story collections so far this year. But it’s been another weird reading year for me.
Been meaning to read Kiran's Dancing Tree too! Can't wait. And I've been putting off reading The Island of the Missing Trees because I'm scared I won't love it when I really want to but now I think I'm just going to read it. Screw it.
This was great! So many books to add to my wishlist now. Especially the Natalie Haynes one! Will you be reading 'The house with the golden door' with Louise? In terms of other channels, a big shout out for Squirrel's bookshelf. She does videos about how she built her own dream reading room/library in her home inspired by some of her favourite reads and passions; and she also posts about repairing old books, and the history of stories like Snow White. Her videos, like yours, always make me smile 📚
I’ll look up Squirrels Bookshelf. Thank you. As for mum and I reading the new Elodie. It’s not currently looking likely. We may do a Booker shortlist something.
📚Love this tag! Great questions and great selections. Also love the sauciness Simon! Hoping for scenes of your 16 weeks of travel on the channel over the summer and also that you have meaningful unplugged and off the grid time this weekend.
I love that people have loved the more saucy Simon… cos that’s the more Simon Simon. Ha. Sadly vlogs of my adventures have yet to happen. I’ve been felled by illness. I might do a compilation of vlogs that never were clips for patreon though.
I SO agree about reading by whim! I have let so many other things control my reading lately and it's not good! I absolutely loved Violets too! But I think that because it is such a quiet book, it seems to slip under the radar! The problem I have is about ordering books from the library and several come in at once and I feel pressured to read them when I would rather be reading something else! I actually think my best book of the year is going to be Chanel Miller's Know My Name. It has taken several months to read, but it is phenominal!
Oh I think you’re going to love the new Ben Myers, it was so good!!! I know you love nature, what about the Wainwright Prize? The long list was just announced, and I always find books I love there.
📚 What a good idea to ask for recommendations of other Book Tubers to watch. The trouble is then having enough time to read 🤣 I'm just finishing Lessons in Chemistry which is really enjoyable.
Have you gotten a new kitty statue for your bookcase? She looks like a Calico and she’s gorgeous. (She’s probably been there for awhile and I just haven’t noticed her.) I’m just getting into The Mercies and finding it a slow start. I hope the story picks up. I expect it will as everyone loves this book. I am very, very excited about Stone Blind. Medusa has always been one of my favorite myths. I just finished listening to my first Nicola Upson book in her Josephine Tey series. I randomly picked #5 in the series, The Death of Lucy Kyte, and I absolutely loved it. The Josephine character is one of my favorite new characters along with her love, Marta. I’m definitely going to continue with this series. Not sure if it’s the most beautiful, but the UK paperback of Cecily by Annie Garthwaite is shiny and gorgeous and I’m very much looking forward to reading it. Kate from Harris & Harris turned me on to this one. Hope the weather is cooperating! 📚📵 (for your off-the-grid getaway)
I think ‘Rosie’ as I randomly named her was pretty new when you left this lovely comment. She’s been relegated slightly. Gasp. Stone Blind is ace. Hope The Mercies picked up for you.
Hope the trip goes well. I would love a backlist summer or autumn reading list. I have SO many books I have had for years but not got round to reading them as I keep buying new books! Maybe we could do a Backlist Trio where subscribers could pick three books that are at least 2 years old?
Apocalypse Reading!!! I love him so much :) Not sure how new he is, but he is definitely a smaller channel. LOL I am coming on 8 years...and I just upgraded my filming from my computer to my phone. The quality looks good, so I wouldn't worry about it :) Although...you are definitely a fancier book tuber than I am, hahaha. I am not really wanting to read any more Elif after reading that 10 minutes blah blah whatever book. I read it last year for the Booktube Prize and I did not like it. Not for meeeee. Hope your trip is fun!!
Akweke Emezi is phenomenal! I just finished YMAFODWYB for my book club and everyone is saying how much they loved it. PERFECT summer read! Best Joy one liner......"give that man a snorkel" LMFAO 🤣🤣 Enjoy your mini holiday in Wales! 📚
Love this! Of course it has added to my ever growing TBR pile! I didn’t know you had been in sunny Yorkshire 📕 Next time please please come and visit our fabulous bookshop, Read, in Holmfirth! Thanks again for all the recommendations
The true story of the Batavia (the ship in The Night Ship from what I’ve read) is absolutely horrifying. There’s some fantastic non-fiction books about it. If you ever make it to Western Australia you can see part of the ship in the Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle. As for booktubers, one of my faves is Middle of the Book March.
It’s such a bad cover. I hope they give it a refresh. Sometimes vintage are amazing sometimes they do this… they did just as bad with their Richard O’Flanagan cover when he won the Booker.
📚📕📖 Best book so far - Small Things like These by Claire Keegan Biggest surprise Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson I will reread this one soon. Also that I like short stories. Who knew!! New favourite authors - Claire Keegan and Kevin Wilson author of Nothing to see Here. New release yet to read - Crying in H Mart by Kichelle Zauner and Cold Enough for Snow by Jessica Au Most anticipated- Limberlost by Robbie Arnott, Here be Leviathans by Chris Flynn Have a great relaxing time in Wales. I’m so jealous. It seems like a fab quiet place. Xx
Oooooh interesting selection. I got Limberlost recently and am very excited for it. Same with Jessica Au actually. Sadly I was not a fan of the Keegan.
Biggest surprise so far: Time Shelter, by Georgi Gospodinov. (have you come across it?) Translated fiction; about Death, non-consecutive time, & all sorts ... would love to hear your thoughts if you do pick it up. Safe travels!
I have very little time left to finish J. Frank Dobie's Children of Coronado for June on the Range. I did read lots of other non old west books this month and I read Larry McMurtry's biography of Crazy Horse, meant to read The Son by Philipp Meyer but I'll save it for next June on the range. Your reaction to the Exhibitionist is similar to my reaction to Austen's Persuasion, I wanted to shake people too. I ordered The Every by Eggers this morning.
If you haven't yet, you must check out Cest Kevvie! I love what you have been doing so keep it up for the end of the year, if you are also enjoying it! I would like to see that books that feel like summer video. Have fun on your off grid holiday (red hill?)!
You need to ask Elif what her recommendations would be for you to read. Also when is the longest being announced for the Booker. I know it's in July and when I Google it it literally just as July.
I am planning on doing a video with Elif hopefully for Sky Arts so hoping to do one for here too. Booker longlist is announced next week, my predictions video goes up later today.
If you're looking for new creators, I just posted my VERY first BookTube video and it's my Mid Year Freakout Tag: th-cam.com/video/0uhsl4NyRlU/w-d-xo.html!
Great video. I really want to read The Island of Missing Trees. Ohhhh a new Kate Atkinson book… I need to read her. Constant ??? that’s strange! The Promise was good. I enjoyed it too. A book that makes you say penis. 😂 I really want to read Violets. Some great projects and reads to look forward to. Safe travels. 😊💙📚
You mentioning the smaller booktubers made me think about how I don’t know any apart from myself. That’s insane. I’m gonna browse the comments to find some people from my boat

Thank you for this vlog,Simon Always highly appreciated. I would love for you to do a list of Summer books 📚. I am still finishing The Library Book book. I follow Miranda s book vlogs and have read a couple of her suggestions this winter and I also follow your mum Louise’ s vlogs and have read a lot of her suggestions so those are three I follow on a regular basis and impatiently await book -📕 so thank you again.
The Island of missing trees was one of my favourite reads of the year so far. In terms of content I enjoy tops and flops videos but your content is always engaging, interesting and enjoyable 📚
Tops and flops videos. What are those? That sounds fun. Sooooo pleased you’ve loved The Island of Missing Trees too.
Soggy Expat is brilliant! Heather is an American living in Cardiff, Wales.
I find that if I like the booktubers personality I don’t always need to like the same books or genres as them so who knows.
Can’t wait for Jess Kidd’s next book! I love everything by her.
Also, I whole-heartedly agree that we need to talk more about grief. It’s time to normalize an experience everyone shares at some point.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾Totally agree
I’m reading The Night Ship this coming week and really looking forward to it. And yes, here’s to talking (carefully obviously) more about grief.
I read The Island of Missing Trees after hearing you gush over it. It is also my favourite book of the year so, it's amazing. Thank you for recommending it. Also love the channel x
Me too!
Me too, really wanted it to win a certain prize
Awwww thanks Sandra. And I’m delighted you loved the book as much as I do.
📚 There’s always at least one book I have to buy after watching your videos! Here’s a video request: your favorite audiobooks… I’m a mom to a toddler 😅 and audiobooks are pretty much my only way of reading these days ☺️

Really? I see it quite a lot. Well, I guess it depends what you mean by interacting with their bookshelves.
It's also great when people with larger followings ask their viewers for recommendations of newer/smaller channels because we get to peep the comments and follow them too!
Hope you have a great off-grid travel experience.
Yes, it’s also just nice for the community.
Oooh thank you for the book and the BookTube recommendations. Will have to go some investigating into those I’ve not heard of or much about.
I love the new ghosts and the cat 🐈 ornament, your homes aesthetic is just beautiful, a real treat for the eyes and the books of course lol xx
Ha. You’ve spotted the recently acquired knickknacks lol
Great answers Simon. I think a seasonal vlog would be interesting. Books that evoke the emotions (good and bad) and landscape of the different seasons maybe as opposed to the time they were released 📚
Yeah I like the idea of a seasonal vlog too. Will have to see what I can come up with. Also it could be very loooooooong.
📚 I’m half way through Hare House, I picked it up from the library today on whim after hearing you mention it. I had no idea what to expect from it and didn’t even know the premise. Im now half way through it as I haven’t been able to put it down.
Ooooh that’s a good sign.
📚thanks for this Simon, really enjoyed it. Currently reading Summerwater by Sarah Moss, wasn’t too sure what I thought after first 50 pages, but now enjoying.
Would love to read along with you and your Mum for Booker short list.
I just loooooooved Summerwater. One of my favourite books of last year.
I would love a “Books that make me feel summer-y” list! 🌞🌻🐬📚
It might have to be in august. I just filmed all of Julys videos (today with this aswell!) and I didn’t do that one. Oops.
I always watch your videos with a pen and paper beside me. I LOVED the Eighth Life. Cheers from Ottawa Canada 🇨🇦
Ha. Good to know. I would love to always pop the book titles in the description but sometimes it’s a time thing.
Best books read so far this year
The Colony by Audrey Magee
Devotion by Hannah Kent
Foster by Claire Keegan
Half way through audio of Young Mungo and it will be in my top five of 2022.
The Colony is my top fave of this year!! 😍
I can’t believe I’ve still not read Devotion. Or Young Mungo. I also have The Colony on my shelves.
Yes to a summery books list/video!! 📚☀️
I feel like I’ve missed summer now. Hahaha.
Lovely session - the usual chatty Simon with lots of great recommendations - hope your mum does this one too.
She has, she has. Now I’m waiting on her books of the year video.
Loving saucy Simon. I would love to see your thought on short story collections. After enjoying Cursed Bunny it’s quirkiness with deeper meanings was just phenomenal. Have a great 16 weeks away. 📖📚📕

I think reading is all about timing. Yet at the same time if we left every book for a rainy day we would never get any reading done. Ha.
@@SavidgeReads very wise Simon, very wise. 😂

Great video and would second a Summer books video! 📚 Some great reading plans and fun to reflect on the year so far. Thanks for sharing your reading!
I feel like I might be a bit late for the summer video now. Maybe seasonal recommendations in 2023.

Oh I think you’re going to love the new Ben Myers, it was so good!!! I know you love nature, what about the Wainwright Prize? The long list was just announced, and I always find books I love there.
The Wainright Prize is one I look out for and then always miss. Next time I need to give it more attention.
📚 What a good idea to ask for recommendations of other Book Tubers to watch. The trouble is then having enough time to read 🤣
I'm just finishing Lessons in Chemistry which is really enjoyable.
With my travels I could do with some new friendly faces to watch as well as some already favourite ones I regularly watch.
I just picked up the island of missing trees! Can’t wait to start it. 📖📒📚
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Oh I didn't realize that Kate Atkinson had a new book coming out. That's exciting!!
I keep hoping it’ll be in each parcel I open… not as yet.
So glad to hear you enjoyed the new Elif Shafak so much!
I looooooved it.
Interesting choices. I agree ad hoc or whim reads really can be enriching and surprising. Enjoy.
I think that’s the way I need to go forward.
Not me only having read one of these?!?! Island of the Missing Trees was ace so I MUST read the rest! X
Hahaha. Well maybe not the one I was super disappointed in 😉

Thank you for the recommendations.
Hope the trip goes well. I would love a backlist summer or autumn reading list. I have SO many books I have had for years but not got round to reading them as I keep buying new books! Maybe we could do a Backlist Trio where subscribers could pick three books that are at least 2 years old?
Oooh I’m intrigued. How would it work, let me know and I might give it a go.
Must read The Promise - Loved Violets - Have a great time camping in the rain - one of my favourite things - don't need to keep clean. 📖
I like to keep clean at all times and on all occasions thank you 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Ha. Well the BookTube Prize is not for me so we can’t all love everything. Hahaha. I’ll check out Apocalypse Reading and you’re channel. Thank you.
I am really looking forward to the new Natalie Haynes book. Hope you are having a good weekend off the grid. 📚
It was a fab weekend. Feels like aaaaaages ago.
Akweke Emezi is phenomenal! I just finished YMAFODWYB for my book club and everyone is saying how much they loved it. PERFECT summer read! Best Joy one liner......"give that man a snorkel" LMFAO 🤣🤣

I’m back in Yorkshire next week but alas don’t think I’ll be able to get there as I’m in for work and then off to Lincolnshire. But one day.
Oh wow. Sounds like it’s going to be quite the adventure. I will be reading it this week.
📚 I can't gush about Emezi anymore I jusy can't, but I will say my non fiction list is finally getting a look through.
I just loooooove their writing sooooo much.
I’m halfway through the island of missing trees right now! It’s so lovely
📚📚📚
Hope you loved the second half too!
Bibliosophie, Noors’s bookshelf, Katey Bellew and Tamscanread
Thank you. I know Bibliosophie already. I’ll check out the other three.
the promise sounds great but that cover?!?! 🙈🙈 hope you have a nice trip!!!
It’s such a bad cover. I hope they give it a refresh. Sometimes vintage are amazing sometimes they do this… they did just as bad with their Richard O’Flanagan cover when he won the Booker.
📚📕📖
Best book so far - Small Things like These by Claire Keegan
Biggest surprise Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson I will reread this one soon. Also that I like short stories. Who knew!!
New favourite authors - Claire Keegan and Kevin Wilson author of Nothing to see Here.
New release yet to read - Crying in H Mart by Kichelle Zauner and Cold Enough for Snow by Jessica Au
Most anticipated- Limberlost by Robbie Arnott, Here be Leviathans by Chris Flynn
Have a great relaxing time in Wales. I’m so jealous. It seems like a fab quiet place. Xx
Oooooh interesting selection. I got Limberlost recently and am very excited for it. Same with Jessica Au actually. Sadly I was not a fan of the Keegan.
Thanks for the recs📚😘 Would you consider more recipes/ cooking segments for your channel? 🙏😘
If Chris would like to do them I will certainly not be stopping him. Not sure he’s keen.
Books that make you feel Summery Vlog - YES, Please! ☀ One of mine is _Dandelion Wine_ by Ray Bradbury. 📖
Ooh I don’t know this one.
📚 how could I not watch you to the end... have a great ‘off grid’ weekend 😁
You never know, you just never know.
I’m loving The Bookish Land. It’s a smaller channel, and she covers a lot of Asian literature.
Oooh thank you. Just subscribed.
The Haynes book doesn’t come out where I am until 2023😩
Summer-y booklist, please!
August will have to be a summery video time. I filmed all the rest of June and July’s today (in a day, imagine!) and that wasn’t one. Oops.
An unexpected real treat for you. I would love to know what you think of “Ashes of the Amazon” by Milton Hatoum. I loved this book.
Ooooh I’ll look it up. Thanks Luciana.
Biggest surprise so far: Time Shelter, by Georgi Gospodinov. (have you come across it?) Translated fiction; about Death, non-consecutive time, & all sorts ... would love to hear your thoughts if you do pick it up. Safe travels!
I’ve not heard of Time Shelter no. Shall look it up.
Summer reads would be fun to see, have a lovely trip 📚
I feel like I’ve missed the summer boat. Lol. It’s pouring down outside.
The Son is one of my all time favourites!
Oooh I loved Persuasion. It’s the only Austen I have enjoyed.
Hope you have a great time away. I recently discovered Tobi's Book Corner. I just love their enthusiasm :)
I am subscribed already 😉
If you haven't yet, you must check out Cest Kevvie!
I love what you have been doing so keep it up for the end of the year, if you are also enjoying it! I would like to see that books that feel like summer video.
Have fun on your off grid holiday (red hill?)!
It was the Red Hill yes and I made a Read With Me video that will probably go live next week.
Just discovered a new favourite author Sofka Zinovieff and just finished her book Putney and omg 😱 wow five stars ⭐️ excellent read
I might have that on my shelves. I think I have the American edition with the strawberry on.
definitely going to read the island of missing trees because of you ☺
It’s soooooooo good. Though I also don’t want to over hype it.

Oooh I’ll check this out.
I would like you to ask the owner of the bookstore Harris & Harris for three book recommendations that you should read. 📕
I may well do that when I go back to see the new shop. And possibly become a bookseller for the day/weekend.
Have fun on your trip 📙
I did! Thank you.
I can’t wait for the new Kate Atkinson. But waiting I am.
Just read Horse. Amazing.
I talk about that book in my next video going up later today.
You mentioning the smaller booktubers made me think about how I don’t know any apart from myself. That’s insane. I’m gonna browse the comments to find some people from my boat
Hope you discover some fabulous ones. I have!
Have a great trip!

I follow Miranda s book vlogs and have read a couple of her suggestions this winter and I also follow your mum Louise’ s vlogs and have read a lot of her suggestions so those are three I follow on a regular basis and impatiently await book -📕 so thank you again.
Hahaha. I definitely already follow my mum 😉

Oooh thank you for the recommendation.
Check out "Dead Good Book Reviews " Kind of brilliant and funny and wonderfully manic. Mostly Fantasy ( although I'm aware fantasy is not your thing)
