@@AJK17.5 the public has been of the opinion that the Queen strongly disliked Diana due to her character and lifestyle choices. So much so that there are conspiracies of her ordering Diana's death. Whether the Queen's dislike of her is true or not, who knows, but the show chose a more wholesome stance.
"All any of us want is for you to be happy." - I would wager a guess and say this line was never said by anyone in the Royal Family towards her.
I personally don't have a horse in that race - I think it was a shitty situation and people made choices that made sense to them. I do think the show is fairly sympathetic towards the royal family. But at the end of the day, this whole show was made to explore their humanity, so that's that.

I love it how Elizabeth Debicki captures the energy of real Diana so well and also looks a lot like her. She's the first actress to represent grace, strength, vulnerability and mystery of Diana at once. All other actresses were missing at least one of the layers.

The way Elizabeth switched from trying to appease her then to shame her and then tries to put herself on Diana’s side. She modifies strategy in response to Diana’s reactions or lack thereafter. She her final strategy is to use guilt of Diana’s child. She was so cold and calculating

It's also infuriating that the Queen's excuse was that she was simply too busy. Granted, this conversation probably never happened, but based on all accounts, the Queen really did rebuff Diana's attempts to talk things out on several occasions over the years.

To be fair though, we don't know exactly what happened between the queen and Diana. The only thing we do know for sure though is that Charles was a terrible husband and Diana was a terrible wife. They both cheated during the marriage and as such they are both to blame for the divorce.
You do know this is a DRAMA.. not a documentary? I doubt that the late Queen was ever on Diana's side nor should she have to be. Even Diana's own grandmother, who was the Queen Mother's lady-in-waiting, had some really sharp words for her granddaughter and how she should behave as a princess/royal.

I read that the queen and prince Philip were very unhappy with Diana after her tell-all book was published in 1992. They held a meeting with her to encourage Diana to think about what she was doing to the monarchy and William's future. Prince Philip corresponded with Diana trying to reason with her and encourage her to be a loyal and supportive member to the royal family and not undermine Charles and the other royals. Eventually Diana perceived Philip's efforts as criticism and mistreatment. Philip stopped speaking to Diana after her BBC Panorama interview.

Diana's book and the BBC Panorama interview were intended to hurt and undermine Charles. Both were very biased and one-sided. Diana said what she wanted people to believe and it wasn't fully truthful. Both the book and the interview are examples of Diana's contribution to the toxicity in the relationship.
The BBC Panorama interview prompted the queen to request the divorce. Basically, Diana was fired from her position in the royal family for sharing the family dirty laundry with the public, undermining Charles, and being disloyal to the monarchy. In her effort to destroy Charles's reputation she risked damaging the monarchy and William's future. William was angry at Diana for her BBC Panorama interview. He was 13 and had better sense than to be disloyal to the monarchy.
While I do admire the queen's monologue, and certainly think it's true that the Royal Family didn't go out of their way to make Diana miserable, (it's more that she was neglected than that she was mistreated) there is one serious flaw in the speech that makes everything Diana revealed in that scathing interview true. "... a valued senior member of this family." The mere fact that this family has a hierarchy of senior members, junior members, outliers, etc. is the reason it is not a family at all. It's an institution. The wants of some people in the "family" are placed above the needs of others. The only thing that MIGHT keep a person sane in an environment like that is to have a loving and supportive spouse by their side, but most of them didn't have that. Nobody was brave enough to try to break out of it until Diana, and that went badly. Now Harry has broken out with his wife by his side, but it really remains to be seen how it will turn out in the long run. He's never known anything else. In America he's just another regular dude, but in Britain, he's the king's son. The second son, but it's still a distinction to make a person feel valued and important.

The Monarchy is not a family, it is as you said, an institution and that institution takes priority over the members. Queen Elizabeth has repeatedly stated that, service over the personal dictates. As for breaking out of the mold.. You cannot compare Henry and his narcissistic wanna be Diana wife to Princess Diana! For starters, Diana was sort building her own life and her own network of contacts; starting with her solo trip to New York back in the late 80s. Then she found through her charities that she could command sizable fees for speaking engagements. She had her own money even if her tours and engagements were on the Crown's dime. What SHOCKED Diana, however, was as soon as she and Charles divorced, she was stripped of her stylings and the budget appropriations that went along with it. She lost her secretary, could no longer travel as a Royal and could NOT represent the Crown in any capacity. She fought to maintain her residency in Kensington Palace. She was looking to relocate to New York. Even in her death, there was considerable argument as to whether her coffin would lie in state and whether she would be given a Royal funeral. But to compare Hapless Harry and Meeagain to Princess Diana is a stretch.

@@lettertoearth When you think about it though, families of any sort are institutions of mankind's creation (some would say the creation of the Divine but I leave that alone as I don't want to start that theological debate lol). Families all have hierarchies of senior, junior, outliers, etc. whether we see it or not. Families can consist of two, twenty, two hundred or more people depending on circumstances. We are all part of the human family, for example, and we can clearly see how that dynamic is coming unglued on a daily basis with the atrocities being committed globally. Please continue to treat your elders with respect but I hope you realize that respect should be earned, not given automatically due to mere age, and that junior members deserve respect as well for the contributions they make.

Sure Liz II wasn't actively hostile, and she may have defended Diana, but that was because it was her duty as queen to keep up the facade of the royal family. Towards Diana she was indifferent or avoidant.
She didn't let Diana speak, she didn't acknowledge her experiences as valid experiences even if not an intended consequence of her (Liz's) attitude.
(Yes I know this is fiction. I'm referring to the fictional characters as they act here, not the actual people. It's getting tiresome to have to put this disclaimer up).

@@persephonehades7547 Actually, people were uncomfortable with the lack of disclaimers even before the series began. Never bothered to watch any of it, myself.
This was a moving scene that made me feel like even I would have wanted to quit the airing of the interview had I been on Diana's shoes and the queen had finally acknowledged me. But unfortunately it was too late. The queen might have defended Diana on her back (presumably), but she still ignored Diana and was rather cold towards her. Even that night when she greeted her, she was cold and severe to her. So in the end we can understand why Diana felt like she did, regardless of what the queen actually thought of her. People need to feel that they're listened to, cared for and not taken for granted. Diana's interview was like a dam finally giving away and venting a powerful flood through the royal family.
I know next to nothing about the royal family and I don’t know how accurate this scene is to history. However, I love this scene for highlighting attitudes that I can’t help thinking that I have noticed with people in my own life.
I think that there are those that find overwhelming happiness in purpose. Their purpose might be as The Queen or as a parent or as someone with a specific job but that role provides them meaning which provides them happiness.
Others don’t see any joy in goals or purposes. They are just as capable of reaching a goal or finding a purpose as anyone. However, their drive isn’t strictly based on a goal or purpose. What you learn and who you meet on the journey brings infinitely more happiness to these people than whatever the goal or purpose is.
Personally, I’m in the “whatever helps you sleep at night” camp. I have no issue with either of these philosophies. I have met kind and passionate people that fit into one and I have met kind and passionate people that fit into the other.
I have also seen horror stories where someone with one of these views of happiness becomes hostile towards those with the other out of bewilderment that what works for them doesn’t work for everyone.
I think that it’s at its worse when someone tries to “help” by offering their own needs to someone with different needs. Then they become hurt that their “help” isn’t helpful.
The show is about 90% accurate. Especially this scene…

Charles was never prepared to provide the level of attention Diana wanted. He wasn't prepared to deal with her mental problems related to her unhappy childhood. She would threaten to harm herself to get attention. She attempted suicide when she was pregnant with William. She refused to follow many of the royal family rules, and it caused conflict in the marriage and in the royal family. Charles's efforts to encourage Diana to follow the rules were perceived as criticism and mistreatment. Their relationship was increasingly toxic, and both were miserable by 1985.
Diana struggled with mental problems caused by her extremely unhappy childhood. She suffered from depression, low self-esteem, and self-destructive behaviors, including bulimia before she started seeing Charles.
There are articles and books written about Diana's mental health. She had many of the traits and symptoms of BPD. She was prone to mood swings, bulimia, self-mutilation, jealousy, paranoia, destructive outbursts, lying, and poor judgment.

They informally separated in 1986 after Charles discovered Diana was involved and in love with her bodyguard Barry Mannakee in 1985-1986. Mannakee was removed from service at the palace. Charles ended his intimate relationship with Diana to avoid any misunderstanding of paternity for future pregnancies. Otherwise, it would be possible for Diana to have a child by another man and pass the child off as an heir to the throne. That would be high treason.
Charles renewed his intimate relationship with Camilla after ending his intimate relationship with Diana in 1986.

Diana caused Will Carling's divorce. She tried to break up Oliver Hoare's marriage in 1992-1994.

Martin was a horribly ambitious man who only cared about his carer. He didn't care about the damage he was inflicting on Diana. He made her paranoid, believing everyone close to her was spying on her for money. Leading her to cut them off, making her isolated and vulnerable. He made her think the royals were intending to take her children away, which was ridiculous, but Martin made her believe it. A despicable man, his reputation may be damaged, but he still gets a rich pension. If I were her son I would unleash a scathing, public attack on him, and demand his pension money go to charity, not HIM.
He did a lot of damage to Michael Jackson as well.

The Queen made several statements that could cast doubt on her support for Diana. Firstly, she was quick to point out Diana's infidelity (not Charles') in Season 4 when she sat down to talk to both of them. Secondly, by repeatedly turning down one-on-one meetings with Diana, it is not unreasonable for Diana to think she's being pushed away or that the Queen was jealous of her popularity, similar to Charles.The queen did break up her sister's relationship with Captain Peter in season 2 when the couple got more popular than her. Diana deserved better treatment from these royals for the work she was doing but they only saw her as a threat.
Nobody knows what the Queen said in real life. The conversations in the Crown are scripted, not real.

I don’t think the Queen or most of the family were intentionally cruel, it’s just they can’t understand things from Diana’s perspective.
This is my Mother, my family, my ex bfs who constantly gaslighted me, shamed me, dismissed me, claimed to have no idea what I was ever talking about, and then as soon as any evidence was laid out, mountains of evidence,
irrefutable evidence, then the final blow would come, zero accountability from them and the turn around. I’m back to second guessing myself and believing that I’m crazy, and just made it all up in my mind. And the claim of, all anyone wants is for you to be happy, 😢 it’s unbearable. Until I broke free and realized, they weren’t going to change, I had to change. Which meant the same for me as it did for her, I had to walk away and never look back.
I hear people scoff and see them eye roll about Diana and The Royal Family allot, who cares they say. Perhaps if you’ve not been in her position, perhaps if u never in your fortunate life felt so desperate for love, perhaps you share the same cold disdain and fear of vulnerability and authenticity in another as the Queen does?
For me Diana’s journey is the most tragic and the most beautiful of all the fables, because I’ve lived it too.

So who was the fly on the wall? Things like this gives the public the opinion this is the dialog that actually happened.
Unfortunately a lot of people thinks this series is a documentary and not a dramatised show as it is, I don't know if this convo actually happened and we may never know if it did but people already made up their minds and think it happened

She first belittles Diana's feelings by saying she sounds like a "broken record", and asks Diana why she didn't deal with it in private. Diana responds she tried "on numerous occasions over the years" but that the queen always refused. The queen's response is simply that they're "busy [difficult to believe that in 15 years she has had no time to meet her daughter-in-law privately ]".
Elizabeth goes on to say that they are too busy to think about themselves "let alone you [meaning "We don't hate you, Diana. We don't even think about you (you're irrelevant to us)]".
Then she says the family actually has been defending her all along: "(...) armies of people come and say 'what has that girl done? who does she think she is?' [implication: people hate you Diana. But WE defend you]".
Elizabeth mocks Diana: "(...) Diana's awful, what a mistake that was! [ridiculing Diana's probable fears]", and emphasises that she defends Diana "loyally, emphatically, to the hilt" because she's a member of the royal family. This sounds nice on the surface...but it comes across as that she only defends her daughter-in-law because it's her duty as a queen, not because Diana deserves to be heard. Even in this moment when Diana is being vulnerable and asking to be appreciated for her feelings and her identity, the queen fails to validate her. Elizabeth is basically painting herself as the nice grandmother who defends her problematic daughter-in-law DESPITE how much people hate her [Implication: "I get into a lot of trouble because of you"]. Then the cherry on top: "The enemy you think I am (...) is a figment of your imagination". The queen refuses to accept that her coldness, indifference and (obvious) avoidance of Diana had no consequence in how Diana felt in the family ["I am blameless. You are just too sensitive and delusional]".
Diana perceives this implication. "Is it?" she asks.
Then the queen warms up a little bit "All any of us want, Diana, is for you to be happy" [this might be a genuine, but it also helps to disarm Diana and make her think that the queen is right, that she should be sorry for bothering the royal family with her feelings and she should just try to be happy].
So it is perfectly scripted and still has nothing to do with reality

It's easy for some of us to say that Diana was wrong to do the interview because of the pain that it caused her sons. Even I thought so initially. But I sometimes ask how else this interview could have been avoided? Was Diana frustrated that everyone in the royal family had refused to talk to her as if she were the troublemaker in this marriage?
Also, when your marriage breaks down because of your partner having an affair, you'd naturally go to your family for support instead of bottling things up. Maybe Diana could have told her sisters about it if she really wanted emotional support? Or wasn't she on speaking terms with any of them? Who else could have listened to her at such a difficult time?
Elizabeth was very jealous of Diana’s popularity and a calculating person who only promoted her son to make Camila queen of England. What a big disgrace for England ! Big downfall

IMO, the sad thing is that I believe both Charles and Diana thought that marrying each other would somehow make each of them whole and magically solve issues that had been unaddressed since their respective childhoods- but neither seemed to realize that the other hadn't solved their own issues,thus were unprepared to solve much less address their spouse's issues! Oh, and I think Diana definitely loved Charles being the Prince of Wales rather than himself for who he was but thought that somehow she'd charm him enough to have him love her for who SHE was. And I think Charles expected her to happily adjust her goals and ideals for HIS sake alone. Alas, this was somewhat a mutual fail.
P.S. The late Queen DID try to counsel Diana but it seems since she wasn't willing to totally lay the blame for what went wrong at her son's feet, that Diana didn't consider the counsel valid.
P.P.S What's perhaps saddest is that in the end, Diana was closer to her ex-parents-in-law than she was to her own surviving mother.

Honestly the more i read up on Diana the more i dont understand the worship. Not talking about this scene in particular as we all know the Crown is a show of fiction but everything in interviews or memoirs. Idk, yes she did good thing but also bad ones. She was human.
I think because she was pretty and much better at PR than her husband. Even now King Charles is pretty dull and boring.
Also, most people saw Charles infidelity much more damning, plus with a pretty unattractive woman.
It's because of her warmth and character is what brought people to her. The royal family hated how much attention she was getting especially Charles. It's easy to hate him because of who he is and now he King while Diana has passed away.
Diana, for me, made a horrible mistake with the panorama interview. She humiliated herself and her children first and foremost. Imagine two kids having to go to school after the two interviews (by both her and Charles). I don't get the hype, I never did. Sometimes she sounded insufferable to live with.
