    In this episode of In The Kitchen With Matt, I will show you how to eat Durian and describer what durian tastes like to me. Durian is known as the king of fruits and the world's smelliest fruit. Did you know that in some places in Southeast Asia, durian fruit is banned on public transportation and places like hotels because it smells so bad? Did you also know that durian is one of the world's most nutritional fruits per serving? In this video, I also tell you where durian comes from and where it grows. Let's get started!

    It is interesting to see how you crack Durian. When I was young, I opened it with an axe and a hammer because I did not know how to do it. So funny. Now, I do it without a glove. 1. I rolled Durian on the floor many times to reduce the sharpness of the spikes. 2. Then I cut 1 inch from the bottom of it out. 3. cut the spiky shell of it, as you do in the video. ....The second step eases to separate parts of Durian. Notice that the quality of the Durian is over-ripe so the meat becomes semi-liquid; Mon Tong Durian in Thailand is around 4-5 kilograms in weight for the whole Durian. nice video

    Hi Matt:Thank you for this wonderful video. A couple of weeks ago I passed a durian vendor in Chinatown (in NYC). He was opening durians, and t he stench was pretty powerful. What I'm wondering is this: Since smell is such an important component of taste, how does the odor affect the appreciation of the fruit's taste? I'd really like to try it, but am a bit...well...reluctant. I mean, if I don't like it, how would I dispose of it?

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt
      @inthekitchenwithmatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the smell can be so overpowering. The best way is to try the ones that were frozen first at the International super market. They tend to not stink as much. Or if you can find some there that have already been opened and sectioned off into smaller pieces and wrapped up, sometimes they do that for smaller portions. At least I know they do that with Jackfruit. If you don't like it, I would take it to a dumpster or at the very least a garbage can outside of your house haha :) Interesting fruit though! And if you can get past the texture and smell the taste is pretty good. I can see why people love them and I can see why people hate them haha

    Quick tip: The reason why the durian fast bad it's because it's too ripe or less ripe to eat, if it's too ripe then it's bitter, if it's unripe then it isn't sweet, try to eat it when it's between "too ripe" and "unripe"

    I wanna ask have you tried Malaysian durian? I thought you might be an expert to teach people on how to eat durian but this just seemed like a tutorial on how to open a frozen durian. We Malaysian likes durian that is Creamy Bittersweet and naturally drop from the tree unlike Thailand which they chop the durain when it's slightly unripe as they themselves dislike ripe durian texture and smell. Hard to find video where people point out the uniqueness of Durian having a bitter taste besides sweet

      It is definitely not for everyone, very weird fruit for sure, but they love it in Southeast Asia.

      @@inthekitchenwithmatt if I'm ever in a country native to the fruit, I'll try it again. I feelblike what I had wasn't the best quality...... it was ROUGH!😂

      @@TPowell617 Yeah unfortunately here in the States there are lots of exotic fruits that we get that just aren't as good as if they were bought and eaten in the native country. BUT with that said, if you were to get this in the native country the smell would be obnoxious lol, but if you enjoy trying new things, definitely try it once to experience its "unusualness" lol
