The real Peaky Blinders ran Birmingham from 1880-1910. After that the Birmingham Boys led by Billy Kimber (who spoiler alert they kill off in the series) dismantled the Peaky Blinders. After that however to call someone a peaky blinder was like calling someone a thug

Michael Corleone joined the Marines in 1940s but it didn't make anything more crucial to the character. Rarely he mentions it, there is like a very brief mensions of it and also some hints here and there that actually didn't made the character feel more real like Thomas for example.
That's why I give credits to Steven Knight, he used WW1 as the driven force who actually changed Tom, the worst part even though he loses and loses pretty bad. He is still used to it, to see a lot of people dying, but like he said he was never used to watch horses die for example.
Also Cillian Murphy actually plays his role well, he played a WW1 character before, he knows his character better than himself.

The second season of Fargo has a crime family in it (out of Kansas), but set in Minnesota (?), that's also really good.
I'd highly recommend Ray Donovan for anyone who hasn't seen it. It's not mob related, but deals with power brokers in LA and NY, and their fixer Ray, and his brothers. The acting is superb. It's some known actors, but many unknown who are also superb

Fun fact: The Isle of man in Irish mythology and folklore was made by a giant from Ireland called Finn Mac Cool because he was throwing stones at another giant and he lifted the biggest rock he could find in Ireland. Looking forward to the UK stuff, Michael. Ireland's gangs have been in the news a lot here. A Dublin gang leader, Daniel Kinehan, now based in Dubai, was a kind of boxing promoter until the other week when the US sanctioned him and TV companies had to distance themselves from him. It sounds kinda old school to be involved in boxing. I presume it was to launder money.

The Shelby's are an entirely fictional family created to portray a group of Birmingham's "Peaky Blinder" street thugs. However, many of the other characters are real historical figures, including Alfie Solomon. Billy Kimber was a real guy too and he controlled many of the racecourses and gambling back then. The Sabinis were a real gang too - they controlled Shoreditch & Hoxton funnily enough (where I live too by the way, glad you enjoyed your visit, Michael!). Incidentally, there was a guy from Shoreditch who passed away recently (he was well into his 90s) named Bert "Battles" Rossi who was actually connected to the Sabini gang. He claimed (and with as much reasonable evidence as is possible with these things) to have been one of the American Mob's few connections to the UK and was the man who helped set up Angelo Bruno's infamous meeting with The Krays. It would be really interesting if Michael could dig up any info on Battles Rossi Stateside. Just so you know the history some what, "they make the Italians look bad in this" ... technically the Sabinis were Maltese and their connection to Sicily was dubious anyway, although they almost certainly played on it and did have some proper Italians, like Bert Rossi, in their numbers. However, whilst the Peaky Blinders (or rather "The Birmingham Boys" who were the real proper gangsters at the time, lead by Billy Kimber) were more or less the most powerful crime group around WWI, as well as a few others, the Sabinis were the ones who ultimately defeated them and took over most of their rackets. By the Second World War The Sabinis were 1 of the biggest Organised Crime Groups in London and the UK, alongside Jewish gangsters like Jack "Spot" Comer. The Krays ultimately inherited many of the rackets that The Sabini family once controlled and, like in America, you can start to see how these groups were connected.
