Replace / Install new string trimmer line - single line Makita XRU02Z weed whacker

Had to replace the line in my Makita string trimmer. Thought I’d take you along as I learn how to do it! The model of this is the Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer XRU02Z. I bought it on Amazon and it is a real work horse!

Hi, the video was informative. I have the same trimmer(bought it a week ago) and was wondering if you have experienced the nylon line retracting into the spool when using it? Do you think that the line may have encountered some robust grass and it tangled or the line was not spooled neatly from the manufacturer? I would appreciate any thoughts on the issue.

Help! I've re done it about 6 times now and every time it stops feeding the line and geys caught back up inside the housing. Im winding it tight and with the direction of tje arrow. No idea what I'm doing wrong

I explain every step while I’m doing it. The string goes into that plastic ‘clamp’ just to make it easier to insert the entire piece back in. So the string doesn’t unravel while inserting and turning upside down

To free more wire after it gets too short do u have to pull the piece and manually pull some and snap it back in place. Or can you just pull some without taking anything apart.

That’s a good question. It should unspool on its own but I always have trouble with it. You can pull the top off slightly and yank the line out. I need to try different line to see if the issue is that or with the equipment

Ricardo, to get more wire out, you simply bump the bottom of the strimmer on the grass whilst you it is spinning under battery power, which compresses the coil spring inside the wire retainer allowing centrifugal force to pull the wire out. You do this bounce once or twice until you hear the sound of the wire being cut my the preset cutter on the base. At this point your wire is at the perfect length for the diameter of the guard that contains the base.
If you are a bit clumsy with the winding of the wire you may find that bouncing doesn't allow the wire to come out. At that point you can, AFTER REMOVING THE BATTERY, push the centre piece in physically with your finger and use your other hand to pull out the wire until it reaches the metal cutter. Pop the battery back on and strim away. Don't be lazy with battery removal - there are plenty of people who can attest to the consequences when safety features don't do what they are supposed to. Kick all stones away from areas you need to strim, you will save so much wire, or having to replace greenhouse glass.
