    Ex-Torontonian and ex-PR of Canada here. I live in Toronto in yrs 2014-9 in total of almost five and half years. In general it was amazing learning experience of living in another country and in a multicultural hub. Unfortunately, even though Toronto is a scientific and technical hub, salaries were bad even then and getting a job seemed mission impossible. It was all about networking, but how to network without being in a network? I came for Canada for postdoctoral training and even after 5 years I was worthless to job marker. Moved to Switzerland to be closer to my family, my Canadian work experience meant more in the UK and in Switzerland than in Canada. Recently moved from academia and industry and starting better life in very late 30s. From Canada I remember people complaining about job market, cost of living, depressive atmosphere, and winters. A friend told me that leaving in 2019 was best decision of my life. I guess she is right. Now I live in a Swiss countryside, place which is embodiment of boredom, loneliness and social isolation but I have a job that pay my rent, good manager and colleagues and beautiful nature.

    I live in Tokyo 20 minutes from Shibuya and my rent is around $700… I can’t even imagine paying that much to live in Toronto, and it’s not even that nice of a city, freezing cold most of the year, and the public transportation is awful. I can totally understand why people are getting out.

    Toronto is so expensive and it's not like you get much for it, that's the problem. If you're going to pay that much, might as well live in London or NYC where you can actually enjoy all there is to do in those big cities.

    • @jermainehassan
      @jermainehassan ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the distribution of population nationwide that's the issue. It's definitely obvious that the most populated cities will have a higher cost of living. So don't think that this problem only exists in Canada.
      If we expand the smaller cities like Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Halifax, St. John's, Fredericton etc, cost of living will decrease nationwide. That's what I think at least.
      But wait, what's the point of expanding the smaller cities if not much people live there anyway? In that case, we can accept more immigrants from overpopulated countries like India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Pakistan, China etc. I am from Bangladesh and lots of people here want to move to Canada but can't due to financial reasons.
      Either that or encourage women in those cities I mentioned to have more kids.
      But, I do have faith in our government that the cost of living issue will soon be solved

    There are some ways how we can solve this issue. It's obvious that the most populated cities will have a higher cost of living. So, what we can do is encourage families that live in the less populated cities in Canada to have more kids and encourage them to just stay in their cities.
    Or we can accept immigrants from overpopulated countries like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, China, Nigeria etc to come live in Canada, specifically in cities that aren't that populated like Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Halifax, St. John's etc.

    Sorry but Canada is huge. If you can't afford Toronto, try Kitchener or some other city in Ontario, heck Winnipeg, Regina are affordable places. If you don't like the cold, then why are you here in the first place? Most people in dt Toronto that can afford 2.5k rent are people earning household income of 200k+ a year, in finance, IT, engineering, medical field and management. Last time i checked, North York is renting 1 br for 1.8k, which is decent considering most people in that area are making 100k+ household income. But if you make the national median, say 70k a year, you're better off in Hamilton or Oshawa, which you can easily find jobs in, as we are in a labour market. Then there are also people in trades where the company pays you to travel all over Canada, pays your meal and gives you a room. Oh and also a very handsome income as well. You just have to be patient and experience the system here. I'm an immigrant here, and I can tell you tough the system is not perfect here in Canada, at least I don't have to worry about who to bribe or the safety of your family just to SURVIVE.

    • @WhizQueen
      @WhizQueen  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I’m very sure you don’t live in Toronto or even Ontario to be making this comments. I live in North york (which is still considered Toronto) and you CAN’T find a 1br for 1800. If you have an existing lease or lease transfer or basement then that’s possible but for new lease? It’s very hard. What’s the average income in Canada? Less than 80k! Most people that live in GTA stay here because of work. If you asked them to move to Kitchener to save on rent, will they get a job there? Even rent in Oshawa now is $1500 for a one bedroom. A lot of people paying $2.5k rent earn about $100k, the 200k range you’re referring to is a small percentage of people. I think you need to research more about the cost of living in Toronto to help you understand what I’m saying. If you move to smaller cities, you reduce your chances of earning higher income. So there’s always a trade off where you need to chose between more money or low cost of living alongside other personal preferences.
