Did power off 180s with my CFI today and wow that runway comes fast LOL! He said we will NOT be doing impossible turns today LOL!!! Great video fellas!
I've been emphasizing this in my teaching lately, love to see it. We had a plane do a 180 after partial power loss on Thanksgiving day at my home airport, and not only did he make the runway, he ran off the opposite end (7300ft runway). All okay. Awareness of wind and some practice can go a long way!
24 years ago I started flight school which at the time was a good time then 9/11 happened and '08 but luckily for me I had enough senority in my company as to not get furloughed. I remember flying the ATR as well. I wanted to say as I can tell you're a dood instructor. I've had 2 terrible instructors and 2 wonderful instructors but they all made me a better pilot for it. I now fly for a legacy airline and I love your channel. Keep up the good luck my man.
I’ve done a handful of these power off landings and love watching the energy management on the turn to final. I love the discussion and the execution. It’s why we brief takeoff emergencies and how they can be executed safely. Great vlog Lew.
Thank you man!
Damn those flocks of planes😀
Another great video mate 👌👏
Given the number of fatalities of people trying to do the impossible turn when the engine quits, ie Mcspadden and others, folks, realize that your best option to live might just be to land in a field straight ahead. If the engine goes out, it belongs to the insurance company at that point, your goal should be to put it down where you can survive, who cares about the plane, you life is more important. The impossible turn is a risky maneuver during a true emergency and many would have survived if they chose a field in front of them, instead of them trying to land at the airport behind them.
I agree with you completely about caring about your life more than the aircraft. As long as my passengers and I walk away, I don’t care what else happens to the aircraft.
I just passed my CFI ride last week. Ive been watching your videos for a while now, but now I’m watching them from the standpoint of being a good instructor. You are a model CFI thanks for the awesome videos and inspiration!
Wow, firstly thank you so much! Secondly CONGRATULATIONS! Thats huge. I’m so glad you enjoy my videos 🙌🏻
Perfect timing. I’m boarding a flight rn. Discovery flight on Friday, full week of aviation for me 😁
Sweet!
Another classic video instruction with plenty of fun to go with it! Thanks for sharing!👏👏👏
Will love to see more videos doing the impossible turn please. They are such a great videos to learn. 🙌🏻
Great subject. I need to do this with my CFI.
Definitely good to practise these! Great video. I’m looking to come out to the states for some flying summer 2024 if you’re around Lew! Not flown in the US before 😬.
I am a PPL student in Switzerland, and our landing check also contains turning Carp Het off, for the mentioned reason of having max power in case of g/a
Interesting. It makes sense, people are worried about forgetting it for the go around.
I fly in Ireland. Even though I fly a 152 and 172, I always run my CUFF check list at about 300FT QFE.
Carb heat off, Undercarriage down, Fuel on correct tank (both), Flaps set.
Ah cool. It's interesting to see how different people do different things.
@@LewDixAviation yeah, I had to go back and double check that I actually saw Jon turn off the carb heat haha. Loving the videos. Keep ‘er lit!
Lew haven’t seen this practiced from runway before. I have seen several times practiced in practice area at 2 or 3 thousand feet. Seems like a much safer proposition in case you do experience engine failure while practicing. More time to pick out a place to land ect
As you saw in the video we had a place picked out for if it actually happened. Under the right circumstances (like this one) it’s great to practice this. The experience could save a life one day.
I understand. Some of those birds up there seem about the size of a Cessna
You currently taking on any new students ?
Not at the moment
I am so confused when people keep flying without ADS-B in capabilities. Just so confusing. The only cheap and useful thing in aviation and you guys don't use it.
If it was up to me I’d fly with it too but I don’t own an aircraft to choose to have that luxury.
I am just starting my PPL work, but I have been right seat passenger in a variety of aircraft due to my job. First thing I did was get an iPad and a sentry. It just adds so much situational awareness. I could see the argument by an instructor though - them wanting you to keep your eyes up during the initial training. In that case I'll let my CFI connect to my sentry lol.
@@LewDixAviationthat Cessna doesn't have ADSB-in at all? That sucks. Why not Sentry through...
