    I always wanted a Peavey 6505 head. I was just starting out in a band and wanted to get one really bad and could never afford one. Finally was able to get it with a Mesa oversized 4x12 and I had the tone I dreamed off. Well the band ended and now I had all this gear. Was really broke and about to go on a trip. Longer story short, I sold it to a local shop for waaaaaaaaaaay less than I should have. Not many regrets in life, but that sure was one of them. Save your gear guys. You'll miss it in the long run.

    The crunch channel on these amps is legendary for metal rhythms, and the Ultra can give a beautifully liquid distorted lead tone with the right setup. I put a 5751 in V1 or V2 on mine to tame the fizz a bit, and also run the amp with the master cranked higher than the channel volume and the gain backed off a bit. It seems to give me a more pleasing drive sound that keeps the crunch but loses a lot of the fizz. Boy howdy is that a loud amp though.

    Sick tones.. owned a few peaveys, settled on the JSX after hearing Chris Amott live years ago. The JSX has the same gain stages as the XXX, only difference is the JSX has resonance/presence controls individually at the front of the amp (and a built in noisegate). Both arguably the best affordable metal amps!

    • @riokinsey2134

      They are NOT the same amps. Aside from one running 6l6s and the other el34s, and the aforementioned resonance/ presence/ noise gate...sans the damping on the xxx...the jsx is the same as the triple xxx ii. If they arent identical,,it is virtually inconsequential difference. The lead channel of the jsx is based on the crunch channel of the triple xxx first gen, with some modifications. The crunch of the jsx/ xxx ii is much lower gain than the lead of the jsx, and much lower than that of both the triple xxx's lead OR crunch. Similar? Yes. But SIGNIFICANTLY different.

    I always forget how absolutely awesome any of the Peavey Ultra lineage amps sound until I hear them again. The XXX was definitely one if the best of them too. I used to run one in parallel with the matching cab with my 5152 and a Recto 412 back in the day for maximum wall of sound.

    • @untoldguitarist
      @untoldguitarist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're the best in my personal opinion in Peavey's high gain builds. A JSX head sounds better then a block and a 5150 II. Also the Ultra's, XXX, JSX, do sound better with Eminence speakers. Since they're already mid heavy amps, the V30's neuter the low end on these heads. As opposed to Eminence V12 Legends have tons of massive tight low end when paired up with a Ultra plus, XXX or JSX.

    I've been lucky in the last few months. I managed to have two great deals on two 3120 (same amp as the XXX, but different cosmetics and shipped with EL34). I put four KT77 in there, 5751 in V1 and V2 and now these amps shine even more! I love them a great deal! They're tricky to dial, but when you find the sweet spot, these amps are killer. My main practice amp with the band is a Ceriatone King Kong with the Chupacabra voicing, but this thing is so a piece of art (took 45 weeks to get it too!) that there's no way that I bring it to a gig haha So enter the 3120! I can get almost the same type of sound as the Ceriatone, thanks to the KT77 and the upper mid range the amps now have. I still love the 6505+ but the XXX/3120/JSX are more versatile imo and in a band mix, they cut really well.

    You can set these up to run a Boss footswitch like a FS-6, FS-7, MS-3, GT-100, GT-1000, ES-5, ES-8 etc if you buy or build a 7-Pin DIN to TRS cable that connects the wires for the Crunch/Ultra and Clean Bypass switches to ring and tip, and connects all of the other five wires to sleeve to ground them. This enables you to change channels but leaves the effects loop always-on while you have the footswitch cable in. I made a shorter one with a female TRS jack on the end that enables me to connect it to a cable snake that includes a regular Hosa TRS cable that I connect to my MS-3 via a Rockboard patchbay module. Also a regular 5150 II / 6505+ / 6534+ footswitch will work for a Triple XXX / JSX / 3120 / XXX II but the labels and LED colours are incorrect.

    This amp contains a little trick that not too many people know about. The gain channel volumes act as a presence dial for the opposite channel. So for instance of you're on the crunch channel and you dial up the volume on the ultra channel it acts like a presence knob and vice versa

    The channel volumes act as presence controls for the opposite channel, and the master and channel volumes interact. IIRC with the master low and the channel high, it’s thinner, but tighter and brighter, and the reverse for channel low and master high.

  • @needsLITHIUM
    @needsLITHIUM 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Easy solution: Quad track with one take of each cab, with the Peavey cab take on the lead channel with the gain walked back to 9 o'clock. Best of both worlds. Track neck pickup/middle pickup position leads/solos on ultra channel with the gain bumped back to where it is in the video.

    it's got like the bogner lifted high end thing, but not in a smooth way. it's so jagged. obviously a good chunk of that will come down to the cab. i truly have no idea why they thought the sheffield speakers would be a good compliment to this. i'd want something dark to tame it. like K100's. which were in some of the 412ms cabs.

One thing I noticed about this amp, you dont want to scoop any mids on the amp eq. You have to run an eq after the amp. I spent years trying to tame this beast but it sounds the best exactly how you are running it. Turn the gain down and run an overdrive in the front for gain.

    Yes....The year was around 1990....I got rid of a Marshall 50 Watt Silver Jubilee 2--12 combo, Tube Screamer, limited edition glow in the dark Pro Co Rat, Boss Turbo Distortion, and the now very rare Boss Dimension--C, Boss Digital Delay/PITCH SHIFTER, and the Boss Digital Metalizer......All because a combo was not big enough and I HAD TO HAVE A 4--12 with a 100 Watt Head....Pedals were for kids and I HAD TO HAVE Rack mount's from now on. No more "kiddie stuff" for me....What's even worse was I got screwed by trade in worth, and the sales guy made me feel like he was doing me a favour and it was "better than being stuck with a bunch of obsolete equipment."......Sigh......Live and learn from me kids. Don't let ANYONE talk you out of your gear unless you have got at least a few second opinions and REALLY thought about it.....Remember, there are people paid to make you feel like all your stuff is worthless crap, and what they have is 100 times better.....One day I will tell you about some of the beautiful axes I let go for one dumb reason or another....Cheers!...stay Metal......and don't do dumb trades like me......haha.

    5:50 A resonance knob would be extremely easy to add in, it's just a potentiometer and a capacitor placed on the negative feedback line from the secondary of the output transformer to the phase inverter. Any mates with electronics experience or any amp tech would be able to do this for you in a matter of minutes if you don't wanna try it yourself :)
    A presence knob would be equally as easy
    I always wanted a Triple XXX as a mod platform to see how much better it could reasonably get...and then just go nuts like I do with literally every amp I own haha

    just pump out the decibels. JSX combo is very versatile with the onboard reverb, 1/2 power setting and Noise Gate. But my favourite is my
    Super 40 for recording. 3 very useable channels and a really really sweet spring reverb. I use 6L6's in the full stack and JSX. KT77's in the Super 40. Great value amps and you can get a great sound within 30 seconds of plugging in. One more thing, the JSX clean is superb.

I run a RH300 G3 randall head or a Peavey Valveking VK100 into a line6 spyder IV 4x12 cabinet... and even though everyone knocks that cab, it sounds absolutely awesome. Its super tight with tons of bass, tons of mids and clear highs and very very dynamic WITH THE BACK OFF IF IT. sounded like suffocated shit with the back on. Taylor, I had a pair of Yamaha RGX612A back in the day. One white, the other purple. Active pickups. They looked so rad. I had never played a Yamaha before, but my local music shop had them hanging. I pulled one down and plugged into an Ampeg VH140 and I was astounded by how beautifuly the guitar played. It was as if Yamaha had made the neck just for me. I bought both on the spot. I paid a little less than $1200 for both. I played them for about four years, playing keg parties, shitty bars, and any place that would have us. I used the white one for over 200 little gigs. It was amazing. Cut to the chase, I sold all my gear at one point. I sold the white one 27 years ago. I have been looking for one ever since. 31 days ago, I looked at one in an Ebay auction. I got extraordinarily excited when I saw the seller pointing out a "blemish "in the binding by the low E -12th fret. The blemish was from a broken beer bottle on a rowdy night at a jam packed road house somewhere in Mississippi. I used plumbers putty to fix it. I casually asked the seller to let me know the serial number. Well, it was my fucking Yamaha! I paid whatever the BIN price was, and it is on the way!!! I saw the shine in your eyes as you cut open that XXL. I will be there soon!!! Thank you for being so honest and genuine on your channel!

    Hey Taylor! Glad to see you’ve demoed this amp. Quick question about this amp. I bought this amp at a price I couldn’t pass up years ago, and man was it a learning curve for me. It was my first tube amp coming from a piece of budget modeling gear. I made friends with it, a little bit. I was looking for a smoother rhythm and lead tone and this amp was just too brutal at the time for my limited experience and understanding. I ended up giving it to a best friend of mine. Now that I have several tube amps, I think I could work with the triple xxx. I did jam in a band context a few times but the style of music wasn’t in the context of metal.
    Can you or anybody with experience with this amp, comment on how this amp sounds in a live context. I haven’t seen many bands use them live except Exodus. And you can here the rawness and how the amp cuts through like a razor. I see them in studios but not on stage. I guess what I’m getting at is.. Do you think this amp should be judged on it’s own or does it really shine in the mix of a band?
    And with that whole how it sounds in the live mix. Do you think you could comment on how these amps you’ve demoed sounded to you in a live context? Everyone seems to cover the aspect of recording amps at home but not really commenting on what their experience was like playing live with them.
    Keep up the great work! And thanks for the lower gain tube tip.
