Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Hellboy's Samaritan Prop, Part 3!

  • As Adam nears the finish for his build of his scratch-built Hellboy Samaritan prop replica, he turns to the finer details of the grip and the bronze hammer. Along the way, there are decisions about the materials used that allow Adam to contribute to the mythology behind the prop, based on his interpretation of the reference sources. Adam also shows a big mistake he made in this build, and what it took to fix it. The Samaritan is getting close to completion!

    • @aserta

Adam is already above apprentice at this point, the problem for him is that he lacks the institutional knowledge you gain under a teacher.
I was in his shoes 17 years ago, i had learnt all there could be to be learnt on one's own (had some previous machining knowledge from my uncle), and then i got into the TH-cam community, found some people local to me through that and learnt my ass off for 5 years.
If i didn't already have a good job, i could turn this hobby into a job. But before that? Nope. The leap between self taught and steered into the right path is too big.
Regardless of how gifted one is, you can't make up for generations worth of information and pathways being passed through a mentorship system.
As a sidenote of my hopes with Adam (and others) kicking the community into the machining bug is that people will wake up from this lull of idiocy and start wanting mentorship in US (and here in Europe too, but to a smaller extent since we never did have such a huge machining learning system like in US).
This gap of knowledge caused by politicians cutting out programs of the machining kind, is a huge, huge mistake. They've essentially stunted two or three generations worth of potential workers, and that's gonna burn us globally especially in the current political (to be read as inter-country feuds).
People like MrPete222 ain't getting any younger, and he's pretty much THE quintesential machining class teacher, now teaching on a global scale.

"You don't have to know how to finish the project, you just have to know what the next step is." This maker's truth rang out loud and clear. A lot of the time, I get bogged down by information overload thinking so many steps down the line in any project and everything that needs to happen to get to the final product that it really affects the process as a whole. This quote makes me think about the presence of mind in the here and now: not looking back and being frustrated with mistakes, not anxious about the tribulations of the steps to come. Incremental steps, one step at a time. Thanks Adam, that's getting etched on a plate and set up in my shop!

Your attention to detail is just flawless. Your skills have helped me. Honestly. I just build scale model aircraft kits and some 1/72 tanks. Things you have done that seem to have NO place in resin or injection kits WORKS!!!!!! I owe my enthusiasm during this time of lock downs increasing here (Only to be expected cause of stupid people socializing on pubs and on the streets after leaving).
