Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Hellboy's Samaritan Prop, Part 4!

  • With Adam's replica of the Hellboy Samaritan prop mostly completed, Adam turns his attention to replicating the large bullet props that would go in the chamber. It's a machining exercise that calls upon the use of a custom profile tool to shape the aluminum, and then pair with a brass casing--all made on the lathe. As a finishing touch, Adam sends his pieces to collaborator Victor Broadley, who uses an amazing vintage toolmaker's mill to etch the proper labeling to match these props in the Hellboy universe!

Okay. As soon as you said the bullets were 22mm in diameter i had to immediately figure out what kind of caliber that would be. Since Im not a gun guy it took a few minutes and Im not sure if Im correct but it looks like a bullet of that girth would be called an "86 caliber"

I've watched every one of your One Day Builds, Ask Adam videos, Adam Savage's Favorite Tools videos, etc. and so I feel like I've learned a freaking ton of things about making stuff from you, Adam, which has caused me to realize that it has become more and more rare that a technique you describe makes my jaw drop...HOWEVER, when you started to describe how you eventually got the lettering done on your bullets, my jaw dropped! I had NO IDEA that kind of freaking amazing machine existed! 3D transferring of a shape via a machine that traces said shape and recreates it perfectly into any scale you want AND DOES IT ALL REAL TIME?!?! WAIT WHAT??? If you stop and think about how someone had a problem they needed to solve and that THIS was the solution they came up with and then they had to figure out how to make all that function properly just blows my friggin mind...This is why I love watching your videos Adam; it's not just because I love watching and listening to you make something you are genuinely passionate about and learning about how you go about doing things, it's also for things like this because I would have never, ever known such a thing or technique even existed otherwise! 1:10 This is literally a hand cannon.
    For a point of reference:
Things considered cannons by the modern military basically start at 20mm and go up from there (Granted, they have a longer shell with more powder behind the bullet). There's also a few grenade launchers like the Daewoo k11 that fire a 20mm grenade that kinda look like the Hellboy rounds, albeit with a longer grenade than the "bullet".

Heya! i just wanna send a message Adam's way, so whoever reads the comments on the channel, please pass this along.
Hi Adam! i wanna say i love all of your prop work and i continue to learn more about the craft and am continuously inspired by everything you do. it's you and other prop makers like you who've inspired and driven me to keep going in my own builds, and your amazing creations that inspire me to create and design passion projects of my own, even with what little actual build capability (materials and tools) i actually have. you and others have inspired me to purchase a 3d printer and begin the learning process for 3D modeling. Your samaritan build inspired me to take my first deep dive into modeling to design my own Samaritan inspired revolver, and while it may not be mechanically functional or look that great, i'm proud of it, and i'd love to send you the link, and maybe even show the improved version to you at a con some day!
Thank you for being a bright star of positivity and inspiration for creators in these trying times!

13:00 that short film at the end was fantastic. I appreciate now how much effort goes into the little things. I wondered how they were made originally, lettering on the bullet casings, I was thinking a 'stamp' as the lengths to go through each bullet shows just how much dedication this guy had.. I also thought how machines like these are being lost yes we could prollly 3d print these bullets cheaply but the longevity and tactile wealth of original materials makes me glad there are people maintaining these machines, like so many industries its sad to look to the future and wonder how many kids will have this passion to keep it going..

Just throwing the additional clear silver/oak rounds in as a bonus is a serious flex. Goddamn.
When it came to lettering the casings, I'd assumed that the plan was going to be to make some sort of die to load into a press with a casing that would stamp the letters in, but having someone willing to just individually mill them in is fantastic. Maybe not sustainable, but then it's not like these are real rounds that'll be expended and need replacement.
