Years ago I applied for a loan with the bank that I had an account of twenty thousand dollars in a savings account. Also my credit score was in the 700 range. I only wanted to borrow fifteen thousand to buy a home. Nevertheless, the bank somehow came up with a closing cost that about 1200.00. The clerk handling the loan tried to inflate the closing cost. I closed the account, took my savings and walked out and never returned.

Credit is not only used in the banking industry to deny upward mobility. Credit is also used in the job market. A couple of weeks ago I was offered a job with the federal government and I passed everything portion of my background however my credit history was under review by a compliance officer. I only had 1 outstanding loan. The compliance officer denied me a position to work in the federal government because of one loan that was not paid off yet. She was so happy to tell me that she is denying my employment because of that loan on my credit report!!!

When it was time to buy a house, WF offered me a minimal amount and with a ridiculous percentage. Went through a mortgage loan company, approved me over double what WF was offering and with a very low percentage rate. Went into WF to get the check for closing, then here comes the banker seeing I bought a home trying to give me a loan. I was like sir, this is a done deal already.

The title of this video is very true. The bank that I have accounts with are constantly calling me to offer their products (loans). I once went in to see what they could do for me. My credit score is 800 plus, the mortgage that they financed has been paid in full, and I have 0% credit usage. The loan that I applied for came in at an 8% interest rate for a $20k loan to buy a used car. Needless to say, I turned it down. It’s just flat out predatory lending. And the banks in our communities use black people to offer these ridiculous loans as the white under writers try to stick it to us.

Thank you so much for this presentation which was forwarded to me by my daughter. 2018, I sought a loan with a bank where I'd banked since 1988. I had three HELOC loans since 2005 and repaid all. Had a 760+ credit score and received 3/4 auto loans. I was pre-qualified April through July and spoke with the representative many times prior to the realtor and I finding a new home to purchase. I'd sold my previous home, so had a sizeable down payment. At actual application for the loan, being half the purchase price, the bank rushed out to assess the home at a charge of $400.00. I was denied the loan saying it was unable to verify my income my Section 8 tenant was less than a year, not on my 1040 and my commercial tenant was new. My retirement income to debt ratio was low. I was irate in that the bank seized $400.00 to assess a property, they had no intention of financing and allowed me to believe I could be approved based on the Preapproval four months earlier. It's a suckered game, shame and discriminatory.

Same thing happened to me during the pandemic they (SBA) were giving out millions of dollars in grants and loans to people who didn't even need it but when it came to my little black business which I was already in business doing well paying taxes I was supposed to get a $10,000 Grant that's not repayable which they gave me $1,000 also I was supposed to be approved for a loan up to $200,000 based on my 725 + credit score in the end I was approved for $5,900 I did not accept it once I looked at the fine print stipulations it was it was a screw job

I am not surprised at all. Glad to hear a WM admit the truth of racism in the financial world. As a veteran with several $ in the bank and having paid for my student loan early with the same bank, I asked for a 1k loan. This is a bank where I was a customer since before reaching the age of majority and yet they denied me the loan. What?!? Needless to say I closed my account with that bank. Also that bank is no longer in business.

Where are the black banks? They are here but some of them have harsher credit criteria. I applied with Citizen Trust in Atlanta denied due to TWO levels of underwriting for a credit card and it was not because of a credit score. They are not structured to help the black community.

Some Black banks are just as bad as the mainstream banks. I used to bank with Carver Bank here in NYC backline 2015. I has read that Carver Bank had taken a loan from one of the major banks in order to stay solvent a couple of years prior. Well when I started banking with Carver Bank, I noticed that the customer service was terrible. The fees were ridiculous. Even when I had no activity on my account bc I was planning to close out my account, they still charged me monthly fees bc I didn't get down to the bank to close out my account in person. They wanted $80 in accumulated monthly fees even though my account was never overdrawn and I stopped my direct deposit. There is a cost for Black banks to take loans from bigger banks to stay afloat and the account holders have to pay that cost. Trying to support Black businesses can sometimes be a double edged sword.

Industrial Bank in MD is black owned, lousy customer service. We were not receiving statements at month end, complained and they were sending to wrong address then wanted to charge for copies, this went on for over a year…tried to get access to online account, they would provide a temp password that never worked, kept trying and finally moved the business account to another bank, best decision ever! We have got to do better!

Right I'm hesitant about opening a Bank account with a Black Bank because I don't know if their on the up, and up as far as a home loan, It's just as hard to get a VA home loan to the point of what's the point of a Veteran Home Loan if you have all the same barriers as you do for a normal Home Loan. Being a Honorable Discharged Veteran mean nothing if you're a Black man in America.
