Vast resource? Yes. Untapped? Hardly. Ausssie and NZ bands: they’ve been known and listened to bought their records played on mostly college radios across US last show I went too was Amyl and the Sniffers so I would say very tapped speaking of Amyl and tapping I can only wish hell freezes over!
Yeah the only people in the states that were aware of the NZ music scene in the late 70s and 80s were a niche microcosm of university students who listened to late night campus radio
Flying nun was one of my fav labels in the 80,s.check out the clean, bailter space, the gordens, the Jean Paul sarte experience,And the headless chickens just to name a few. Must have been something in the water over there.
I guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
I couldn't believe I hadn't heard of them either. And now I've gone on to find a bunch of other great New Zealand bands and chaining off from them to several other newish bands to me
Not to be a wonk or anything, but 1987 IS relatively new. In the grand scope of things, like the voice says when you're sitting in the planetarium and so on....
So the off pitch probably is just tape stretch or whatever wowed and fluttered in the analog age. I love this mix of tears and brutality, like Machu Pichu by the Strokes and Berlin got blurry by Parquet Courts. Stranglers...Buzzcocks...lots of that out there!❤
Found this by chance today. Now it’s become one of my favourite tracks of all time. I promise I will use it on a film when I can. I’ll see you back here.
Really? In L.A America? That's lovely to hear a band from my hometown, chilly Dunedin, New Zealand, is reaching everyone. Genuinely put a smile on my face. Check out the Verlaines and the Chills too bro, more "Dunedin Sound".
These guys are so much fun. I first saw them at a student union concert in the very early 80s. They went on to blow my ears out on a regular basis throughout the 80s at our local pub. I was at art school and Paul, the bass player was my life model. It was always amusing to see him fully clothed *wink*
this is my new favourite tune :) this period, early mid 80s, fecund period for Australian and NZ music - go-betweens, triffids, nick cave, church - and the cross fertilization between them. p.s. can we please return rusty and richard wilkins (previously richard wild) post haste.
@@NashSpaceRocket lol it would seem he is missing the point somewhat. all new zealand ingenuity, inspiration, grit and heart. thankyou kiwis!! they will be playing clean at my funeral
Lyrics are included in "Volume 1". Don't have it anymore to double-check but this is pretty close: He's my man, his mind's made up in blue All those friends he's been talking to His kiddin' ways, coming to an end now The lonely kind is waiting for its time (Chorus: And I don't know, my mind's made up in blue All those friends you've been talking to) The scars on his hand are glowing like his eyes now As he grips on to another day The ones with better times have gone by now Better times are when you're in control (Chorus x2) His second-rate ravings don't thrill me Even if they did some time before Only his blue eyes still drill me As I get to know my friend, the floor (Chorus x2)
Here's my best stab at the lyrics, no lyrics sheets on my 12" single... I'm sure I have some of it wrong, the raping bit just sounds too weird . . . He's my man, his minds made up in blue All those friends he's been talking to Hidden ways, coming to an end now Lonely kind is waiting for its time And I don't know, my minds made up in blue All those friends you've been talking to Straws on his hand, they're glowing like his eyes now Straws he grips on, to another day Wants the better times have gone by now Better times are, when you're in control And I don't know, my minds made up in blue All those friends you've been talking to (x2) He's thinking rain, rainy days don't thrill me Even if they did some time before Lonely, his blue eyes still drill me Because I get to know my friend before And I don't know, my minds made up in blue All those friends you've been talking to (x2)

@downallyourstreetsTry using a period now and then.
New Zealand is a trove of incredible rock music. Every Bats release is fantastic!

I have always liked the drummer's pre-beat accents and the Bass as lead. Also, this period was full of experimentation in the video arts.
Went from the US to Scotland to study. Brought a CD booklet with like 40 LPs. The Bats were two. Tuatara, Tall Dwarves and The Verlaines too. : )
Heard this song on Spotify the other day and was hooked, couldn’t believe it was from 1987 thought it was a relatively new song

I heard this song at a dive bar in LA for the 1st time and this song has never left me it’s been on my playlist for 3 years now
it is freakin' fantastic!

What ever bar it was, it was not a dive bar. It is a bar w/refined taste.
That fuzzy bass energizes me! What a tune!
Beautiful bass sound!
Flying Nun Bands, and The Bats are Kiwi 🥝 Iconic music 🎶 for what we are.
Remember listening to this at the dux deluxe, floor felt like a trampoline 👍
Wonderful tune. A real indie classic.
I listen to this everyday.
