This video makes me reflect on the poor people of Gaza who've lost everything. I look around my home at all the small trinkets filled with so many sentimental memories and I shudder to think how it would feel to be in their shoes. My heart breaks for Palestine
Need to comment again because HOW MUCH I LOVED the scene where postcards turn into memory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It caught me off guard and made me want to cry because of how much memory we all share and try to preserve with these objects and that's so human and precious!!!
giiiiiiiirrlrlll, there would literally be no video if not for me constantly being inspired by your approach and play. i am quite proud of that part too and i am always held by all the postcards, and you are literrally the biggest provider of them. i have like four from you or something, IT IS SO PRECIOUS GURL
I'm not minimalist by any means but I like the idea of owning less but owning everything that has a personal value to me . I think a lot of people confused between the idea of minimalism and the aesthetic minimalism they are entirely different things . My room is filled with small little trinkets are collected over time my closet is filled with cool thrift finds I can only wear with one pair of jeans . My journal is filled with junk i collected over time. Due to mental health issues I had to narrow my life down to the things that only mattered because I couldn't bear the burden of carrying around things that didn't bring any value to my life those included clothes that I felt uncomfortable in the sweaters that were itchy the paintings I didn't admired anymore. I would never go for the aesthetic minimalism I own little stuff but my room is still like my sanctuary. It's filled with objects of my personal experience. But I love owning stuff but owning only the amount that I can manage.
i think you are approaching it very wisely. i love the phrasing "owning only that amount i can manage". and i approach ot very similarly. I tis so satisfying to own things that you REALLY like, that literally makes life a more interesting experience. thank you for writing this comment and taking time to watch the video, i hope you find more things that you enjoy owning and are able to manage
"Home being another, larger kind of pouch or bag" is an amazing way to phrase this. This is how I use homes in video games, but clearly this is how I interact with my physical home, too. Thanks for sharing the article and your thoughts in this video.
you should check out le guin's full essay on that topic here, it is wonderful, interesting connection to video games, didnt think of that! cute - otherfutures.nl/uploads/documents/le-guin-the-carrier-bag-theory-of-fiction.pdf
On some level, this video met the need for a peaceful video essay, reminiscent of old internet without AI generated art or videos sponsored by a random tech company (not that I won’t be happy if someone paid you to create content!) I think travelling and getting uprooted constantly creates this internal sense of instability that makes us impossible to find permanence in objects or surroundings that we yearn for at a human level. Going to Ikea and never buying anything worthwhile and having no control over the room one lives/works in, takes a humongous toll on our ability to build our identity through our possessions. Objects, old photo albums, heirloom, even random documents connect us to our pasts. It is as if the time, people and circumstances get etched into them, and we can communicate with them in our present. And maybe someday, someone will look at all the memories we archived after we’re gone..
why is your comment making me so emotional, Chirag. THank you so much for taking the time to write and watch. I agree with you completely. your comment is so well put i die. it is SO difficult to understand who you are and feel stable without posessions. it takes away so much joy from life, tbh. but i hope one day we will have the space to make meaningful collections and build our identity through them.
This is some good stuff, man. I'm constantly struggling between the desire to toss excess stuff and the desire to hold onto things for their sentimental value. For a while there I thought it would be a great idea to digitize a bunch of stuff through scans and digital photos and then toss the physical items, but it was definitely not the same. Being human is a pretty fascinating experience.
Thank you so much for watching and writing a comment. It's so funny you are writing this, cause i did that in that minimalist era at the age of 17. I literally through away loads and loads of stuff. All of my medals and a lot of teenage artworks, but i took a picture of all them in an albu. it is pretty neat to go through it, but i am quite sad i didnt save some of the pieces, quite frankly. I guess the absence of them tells as much of a story as the presence.
@@maryalykova6789 I was almost there at one point, but I couldn't go through with it completely. I still have a box full of paper notes I was passed by various people in middle and high school and I'm really grateful I held on to that one. There's just something about having the physical object in your hand, and knowing the other person touched it too. I think I've gotten to a sort of "reasonable minimalism" place at this point because I definitely do suffer from having too much stuff cluttering up my space and my mind. I still try to minimize my number of possessions, but not to a zealous degree. I allow myself to hold on to a modest collection of important or sentimental things, for many of the reasons stated by you and your friends in your video. Thanks again for making it!
Oh my Seas, what a breeze of freshness! I adore your storytelling, editing skills, the natural curiosity, poking at ideas and tugging at thoughts. It's so uplifting to see something sincere and close to my heart. Thank you ❤
A lovely reflection. Artful and insightful. Thank you for making this video. The LeGuin quote has me really thinking. Is it my relationship to objects, how I value them, how I consume them, how I share them, that makes me human? Imagining the differences between human relationship to objects and how the non-human/animal world relates to objects, is very thought-provoking.
Thank you for this beautiful comment! You should check out the Leguin's full essay, it is called "the Carrier bag theory". Truly life-changing. Also the comparison you are drawing is very interesting! it's so cute that humans animate and gice meaning to all of these random thingies. SO HUMAN!
2:10 omggggg ur friend's description really hit the nail on the head. as my mom would say tho, "ur memories (and identity) are up here *points at head*" like i get what she's saying but my pack rat heart cant do it
Really interesting, discussion, thought-provoking. Like when you move a lot (as I have and I understand you have as well), the things you take can be a burden, they can make moving harder, can require a lot from you to take care of them, but they can be helpful in reminding you about important things. In my life I know many ppl who are hoarders. How do you protect yourself from getting buried in things if they all hold value? Maybe you just prioritize (like you do with friendships) and keep the ones that you cherish most? I feel this topic is similar to digital photos: I don’t take a lot but over the years I end up with so many I can get lost in the sea of them. And then, with so many, none of them have value. If I pick a few that are most important, of the ppl who are most important then they do help me feel grounded… Back to your video, really liked the way you put so much stuff in the vid to reflect the topic!
GREAT refelctions too, thank you for commenting. the balance between hoarding and collecting the important things is very tight. We need to revise our belongings once in a while for suuure. love the connection to the pictures too, very relatable.
hello! i am your historical forces junior who you may never meet irl. this video was so good and you should be so proud of yourself, as a video maker i can tell so much effort went into this :-)). i’ve also struggled with things and have felt a tension between minimalism and maximalism for most of my life and this video felt healing. i think the historian in me wants to keep everything as primary sources for future me haha.
YAAAAAY, we welcome historical forces majors here! thank you for watching and commenting, hope you enjoy ah142 ( this reading is from that class) as much as i did. it is difficult to obtain that balance for sure! good luck weith the end of semester
This was so interesting!!! I have several conditions that affect my working memory so I rely on my stuff to access memories and even orient myself when I wake up! In saying that, I think having more stuff means my memories are more scattered (which makes me feel scattered) so I wish I’d been more minimalist in acquiring things. I’m going through my things now because chronic fatigue means I can’t take care of much stuff anymore, it gets too messy and causes problems, but it’s difficult to know what to keep or get rid of when so much is sentimental
This is o e of the fresh content I've seen so far... so raw, and really touching human lives... the minimalist is one who know what to keep and not what no to... it has nothing to do with how many things you possess, it's about how valuable and meaningful they are to you. Subscribed and here to see your channel grow... much love from Tanzania 🇹🇿
ABSOLUTELY AGREEE! thank you for watching from Tanzania. I am currently in Kazakhstan, and im just so impressed and grateful to the internet for bringing sweet souls like you to my channel
Love the video-style! Minimalism is a lifestyle AND an aesthetic. Don‘t throw out items you are connected to! Be intentional about the stuff that sparks joy and getting rid of what stresses you out. „Owning less“ is not the point. „Visiting the mosque“ doesn‘t make you a muslim.
It is very juicy and sensitive about simple things, and all this is due to the actual idea (to be or not to be a statuette / book / cap from a loved one / etc. in the house / or not to be) and good camerawork! Thanks to Masha
i agree haha!! but i am already grateful for the ones it is getting and thanks for taking your time to watch and write this comment, eraser shavings 4846
This is silly but a few weaks ago i felt overwhelmed by the objects in my room. My parents spoiled me growing up but i never really let go of most things, the things i did like my monster high dolls and LPS hoard went directly to my parent's friend's kids. I still hold onto "collectibles" they gave me like the Funko pops i dont like. Giving me the funko pops for someonething they knew i liked was a sign of affection. Then i watched fight club for the first time and related very hard to the opening ikea scene. I think i spend so much time trying to use my objects to define me, make me more digestible. I think i stumbled on your video a few days later but stopped listening because i got horrified at how ive been trying to force my objects, my appearance, my media consumption to reflect something people can easily understand. I feel like im starting to expand out from the boxes i trapped myself in when i was younger. The boxes were something simple i could understand and something i could explain to others. Now im confused about myself and unsure how to explain it. Im in the process of slowly clearing out my room. I have few bags of donatables but still have more to deal with. I thought having objects was the issue and partly wished something happened that would make me lose them all like in fight club. The hoard of stuff i did not care about was the real issue. im now looking at it all to see what i like, what i dont like, what i need, and what i want. I have a conatiner of my old things (notes, pamphlets from places ive been, doodles between friends, school pictures, ect). I have a Christmas sweater cup my little cousin gave me that i use for all my hot chocolate (the fancy hot chocolate hoard my parents gifted me last year that i actually like!). I have a little tea leave holder thing that i use pretty much daily that my parents gifted me as well! I'm looking forward to going through the rest of my stuff! Thanks great video!
thank you for sharing your story with us! i feel you on that feeling - trying to put oneself into boxes through the things one owns. it must be the most natural desire. After all, humans have been definig their social groups and belonging to classes through objects for amny centuries. but it is difficult, when the objects do not seem to define you anymore... and i m proud of you for clearing things up, it really helps understand who you are better. sometimes we need to start from a fresh start, good luck with your journey
This scratched an itch and helped me feel some connectedness to other people ☺️ It’s been a long, long time since I’ve gotten to see something that’s this sort of beautiful
I am an ex-minimalist. The base philosophy of not owning things you don’t need is fine. You don’t need to hoard garbage that is not useful or meaningful. Hoarding can be a dangerous problem. But as I’ve removed myself from the minimalism community, my definition of what is useful and meaningful and beautiful has broadened. Physical items link you to time and space and humanity. Each item that exists (especially if it is high quality, antique or handmade) has required another human being. You are linked to humanity by the items in your life! You are linked to the past, to culture, to family. You are linked to yourself.
Ms. Masha! Such a touching film you make here. I was also the high school girlie captivated (or addicted) to minimalism and what it was supposed to "solve" in my life. I am also in this constant battle with objects --to keep or forget-- as I pass through life-- not wanting to become overconsumed by things (will I become a hoarder thinking this way?) and not wanting to let everything go (who am I if I have nothing to decorate my walls with, no personality outside my body, nothing to show, if I get rid of it all?). As Ethan and I watched this video, he pointed out your "style" of creating which is quite special. Thank you for creating
STEPH!!! thank you so much again for helping with the video. And i agree completely with your thoughts, it is a constant battle. I guess it is up to every period of life and state we are in to decide on the matter. I think i particualrly enjoy the things that are small and meaningful, cause they can be easily transported, and i can make an altar with them hehe
I feel like minimalism and maximalism is the same old age debate of one group of people saying they narrow the things they own down to what they use and love while another group says that they disagree with that group because owning nothing is soulless and that everyone should own things they love and appreciate which is what the first group intended all along.
