I was scrolling on TH-cam trying to find new hobbies that would successfully impact my future and career as I'm in college working towards an engineering degree. Watching this video made me understand that trying to find a hobby is about finding something for myself to really enjoy, and not for some sort of competitive advantage, great video man!
I feel as though engineering has really taken the fun out of so many cool applications. I love programming and building stupid/fun designs. I can tell you so many of my peers have no creativity. They get good grades but can’t come up with an original topic nor can they try and implement nothing that isn’t given. No one can make decisions, design choices, etc. This really feels like capitalism removes the joy of doing what you find fun. Sorry for the rant 😅
One of the biggest changes in my life has been in really trying to embrace the process and let the results speak. Doing things not because it will lead to something but just because I want to. So really loved this man!
That must’ve been a huge sacrifice to give up something you’ve worked for almost a decade if not more when you count the years leading up to it… it takes an unbelievable amount of courage and determination to make a life changing decision!!!! This video was a breath of fresh air and pushed me to not only engage but open a Google doc to write about the topic on passivity… i want to call it “in defence of passivity” thank you for this inspiration!
Damn, I was also a burnt out CS student who constantly questioning myself why am I doing all this but never figured out the whole picture of why I am always about to optimizing and stuff, never feeling genuinely happy. Thank you for organizing this content so well that gimme a sudden of enlightenment.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for both the message and the reminder there's more in this universe about the obsession to not fail, to not succeed, and to have the relentless fear of failure. Regards from México!
I wonder tho, scrolling on TikTok could also be seen as doing something you like but it is bad for you. For me it means you’re not wasting time if you are doing something that will bring you long lasting fulfilment and inner peace. :)
Great video, I stress a lot about trying to manage my time optimaly and watching this video helped me let go off some of that pressure and open up a new perspective. Thanks man ❤
Great video. Thanks for this reminder. I'm going to start playing music again today because of this. It's been like 2 months since I played an instrument, and I always feel more depressed if I don't get the music out of me for a while.
The thing you said "Learning just for the sake of learning" is what I do. I'm 14. I've been programming for 14 years (edit. wtf what did i write. lol. 3+ years). The thing you said matches me 90% (cz i know no man is SAME). I don't care about anything than knowledge. And yes. I think. I think a lot. I do 3 things a day, think, eat, sleep. That's it. Loved this video.
Im on the path of becoming a part of a software career me where i nurtured huge ambition to work as an IT dude just like you. October 19th,2024 (Since October 10th,2022). What drives me forward is the fact that loads of works, stress, everything, what life has to throw at you. All memories, sweet dreams, great excitements, they are all boiling down to the success that is gonna be summed up after i graduated from University, and then my job landing as well. The video means much more than just defining why success isnt enough (as for your opinion). It means a lot, i''ll make sure to save this video for future use whenever i feel like hitting a bump in the road.
Hey, I think you may have misunderstood the point of the video. Kunal isn’t saying that success isn’t enough. Rather, he’s highlighting the importance of being willing to 'waste time', engaging in activities without the pressure of external validation, which allows someone to fully immerse themselves in their own thoughts and do something simply for the joy of doing it.
"The outcome doesn't define you" is exactly what you need to hear when you have low selfconfidence. If you fail, it doesn't make you a failure. this thing just failed, not your entire existence and identity
I totally agree. Another reason why focusing on results and ignoring the process, is dissatisfaction for the consumers/audience, not just the creator. A proper example is the `curl` program: Many people see it as "just another utility" or "a silly program that could be rewritten in a week", but they forget all of the design decisions, all the time and energy spent developing it, and the passion behind it (if I'm not mistaken, `curl`, just like Linux, started as a "hobby project")
often times we can forget the time & effort dedicated to simple utilities/projects/experiences that we have or others have made. It's always worthwhile to take a step back and have gratitude for said efforts
Wow that was so good! I am a pretty rational person and it is a very hard process to understand myself and my behavior. With this video I have "discovered" that my biggest problem is probably my restlessness. Thank you and keep on doing what you do!
I felt the restlessness so much in the past. It's easy to hone in on the feeling to constantly go to the next goal, so much so that you mindlessly move through life. thanks for watching!
I find that I can appear restless when I am searching for something (even if I'm not sure what that is). I am someone who moves between things fairly rapidly because that is how I engage. That does not mean I don't also engage deeply with where I spend my time. Just two cents.
NGL. I consider myself rational. And if you were not like this and says your own self rational. I don't think you're rational enough. *or never thought about it*.
That was some great content! Really lured me in till the last second. Beautifully curated and executed even more gracefully. Keep making more art! much love💛
Loved this video! I might have already read The Gita since you are Hindu but if you have not then I highly recommend it to you. The whole point of Gita is motiveless action. Doing something just for the sake if doing it.
voiced exactly what i feel is the most important philosophy in life, love this. i was struggling so much with my college application process because i wanted to reflect this same sentiment. thank you for giving me courage to express it
Thank you so much, as someone that’s been a career loser, your video has helped me shape my mind with the correct mindset to achieve a better life for myself
Very, very well done. Starting my university career surrounded by people who are trying so hard to get into those big tech companies. I'm struggling to balance assignments left and right, and I definitely feel bad because I wasn't productive a certain day. This really changes my perspective. Gonna start focusing on the journey and present.
7:09 so true. this is what i have been believing since my childhood days. [ironically] this view got the validation, hehe. everyone always wondered why I didn't like to play guitar for an audience - and was content with what I was playing; one could see how clueless they were (and still are) at my total lack of seeking validation. I enjoy what I do, or stop doing it - I don't need an Other; if it's there well and good.
The quality of your video and content is top notch. Thanks for your insight. I hate logging my daily life and any kind of routine basically, but some kind of routine is necessary for my body and brain
what a beautiful fucking video the way you tied it all together at the end with how you let go of ur job you worked so hard for the same way the monks let go of the mandalas they worked so hard on is just beautiful, deserves way more recognition man.
Its all about being present, following what feels right in that moment, and reflecting on it after by letting the subconscious do its thing, to then conclude if it still feels right after, to then repeat from the start
But often not everybody can afford to waste time. Financial independence which I believe you for through all that grinding in the former period of your life has given you the freedom to experiment . It's the balance to be aimless and to have an aim, to embrace this duality , the yin and Yang is when you are free.
Thank you for such an interesting wave of emotions. Each person has his own unique way of life... we just have to remember that we learn every day in our life, even if we already know a lot. The Universe is infinitely variable in the possibility of the occurrence of certain events. To get to know different options for life development and somehow to gradually practice this experience in our life with benefit for our life... and do all this with lightness of thoughts and pleasant emotions. I returned to chemistry after a 10+ year "vacation" while traveling in other "walks of life" - a journey full of stories and experiences. Yes, I like to be a chemist first of all, but it turned out that I can also work as an insurance agent and have a small manufacturing company at the same time :) 🙏🙏🙏
my definition of wasting time, is to sit at an office desk working on someone elses project while day dreaming about building my own stuff or going out enjoying nature. For me breathing fresh forest air and listening to birds, or working on my own projects -is being productive in equal measures.
Good video - not kidding, I only realized this video was made by a "small" TH-camr at the 6:20 mark haha. Good stuff, and good luck on your TH-cam journey
Every task has a lasting result, even if we don't think so; skills transfer, ideas transfer, pain transfers. Every action you make currently matters, even if it doesn't feel like it. Life is in seasons. This season of my life is work, but if I sit down and do that work, then my life will be better in later seasons. Enjoy the process, you'll never do it again.

I'd like to find my way back to avoid optimization in the middle of making a living. Thoughts? :c

Achieving fulfillment in your work is far better than simply pursuing greatness.
YES. I'd rather be happy with no recognition vs be great and miserable
Why not both?
Just dont force your kids to work for the government!
