  • The video is mainly about the many different ways you can configure this cage for your OM1. Naturally I was unable to cover every configuration because the number of ways that you can configure it are just about unlimited and with new accessories coming out all the time, the option set grows ever week.
    Naturally I covered some of the ways that I have been experimenting with using it with my tracker. Looks like it will for the heart of my system with that tracker. I will no doubt continue to add and modify my setup as I get more experience using it.
    The cage was provided to me by SmallRig, but I was not payed to do this video.
    Here is a link that they provided me with for the accessories you see me using. I of course am not receiving any kick backs for these links so know that they are not affiliated.

    I bought this cage as soon as it was available, love your channel. I used to work in the aviation fastener industry, we never cut threads but rather roll form the threads on screws, under our high powered microscopes (after cutting the screws) you can actually see the metal is very similar to wood in that there is grain that contours the threads.

    Thanks very much for this video. I just got back into photography after being away from it for a while. I also do short video clips. I remember hearing about smallrig a while back. I see that they have some great product that I will be able to use. A big bonus is that the prices are quite reasonable.

    Thanks for the demo, it’s unfortunately that ASI does not support Olympus cameras, we still need to use intervalometer internal or external, thanks for taking time and explaining options.

    I picked up one of these for my own star tracker rig. Another trick is that you can turn it into an L-bracket just by booting an ARCA plate to the side.

    Thanks for the great review. Looks like something I may get for my EM1.3 for a macro rig.
    I already have a few Smallrig bits, the quality seems to be very good.
    A couple of questions if I may.
    How snug is the finger groove on the EM1.3? I would not have guessed the grip to tripod hole was exactly the same on all three models.
    With the flippy screen, can you fold it right out with the cage?

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark.
      Flippy screen can still be fully folded out no problem.
      The finger groove is not quite as snug as some of the ergonomic lines are a little different. I would say though that it would be hard to improve it from what it is.
      Hope that helps.
      I bet it would be great for macro. You could even easily attach a bellows to it I bet. Something for me to think about myself as I do enjoy winter macro photography.

    Thank you for another great reviewI I'm glad for the new 3/8"x16 TPI holes. I use my OM1 and EM1iii is multi camera video of chamber music concerts, mounted on high STURDY tripods. To minimize these, microphones other accessory equipment must be fixed on common brackets with the cameras or mounted on such cages. Hence 3/8 inch bolts.
    BTW which of small rigs seemingly vast array of handles (related accessories) did/do you find most useful?

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is the handle that I used. www.smallrig.com/smallrig-arri-locating-top-handle-lite-3765.html
      It works for just about all my uses. And at 30$ seams very affordable to me.

      @@TheNarrowbandChannel I actually made the mistake of ordering the Similarly priced NATO model and have just ordered the necessary $10 or so rail for it. Always read the small print, which was there in red warning that this intermediate mounting piece would be needed.

    Great video and very timely too. Can the SmallRig cage also be used as an L-bracket? I haven't seen any released for the OM-1 yet (at least that I am aware). Happy 4th to you all!

      I would look for a universal L bracket. Or I think this will work. I am getting confirmation though now. Might have to wait 12 hrs though because of time difference.

      I have the 3LeggedThing Ellie and it interferes with the weathersealed doors to access the ports on the camera. If you do video and need to hook up a microphone and headset, its a hassle. But its probably the best one out there until someone makes a dedicated L-bracket for the OM-1.

    • @SilverHalides
      @SilverHalides 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never tried the 3Legged Thing but I just ordered the Ellie Short to use on the Pen-F. I am incredibly impressed with the Really Right Stuff L-bracket for the E-M1 mk II/III, which almost never leaves my mk III. It would be fantastic if RRS would make one for the OM-1 too, maybe even one that fits the HLD-10 battery grip.

    Hi, your videos are very interesting because you also talk about Olympus while the others only Canon or Nikon. A friend of mine uses an OM1 (fantastic camera) with an OM 40-150mm F4 PRO and a Star Adventurer but she doesn't find any filters for the camera or for the lens. Can you give me some advice? Congratulations and thank you

      For filters consider STC. They make clip in filters for OM and EM cameras. I did a video about theirs a long time ago. stc-optics.myshopify.com/en/clip_filter

    HI! Technician/engineer question. First of all: I would mount on Om-1, as i did on my A7C before, a Peak design belt clip, for faster attachment/detachment. Due to configuration, i can grab my camera with my right hand and extract like a gun like a bolt. To do this, i have to install the camera part of the clip ON the smallrig, ABOVE the camera, and not under. In this mode i can extract the camera like a gun cause while the hand grab the camera, one finger can press the release key on the belt clip part. Ok, now i am thinking: DOES THIS TYPE OF CAGE SUPPORT THE WHOLE WEIGHT OF CAMERA+LENS WITH ONLY THE SINGLE 3/4 ATTACHMENT? Note that the a7c smallrig have an additional fixing point on the side, and that on my desiderd OM-1 configuration, the clip belt part will be mounted ABOVE the camera, in the flash hotshoe zone, at the opposite of the basement.... Thanks for the kind answer, if you read all this :). M

      Hmm I am having a hard time envisioning this. But I also have chemo brain. I can say that the cage does feel quite solid though. Especially with the OM1. Olympus obviously designed it with the cage in mind.

    When will the OM-1 cage with battery grip be available?

  • @marcusa3177
    @marcusa3177 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes to Smallrig kits being Lego to us photo/videographers hahaha. I personally put the laser pointer on a mic mount which us then slotted onto the hotshoe. V useful if you don't have a go-to mount and you're star hopping in B5+ skies with only focus peaking and a laser pointer to guide you.
    Q: say you're using the 100-400mm lens; putting all those doodads on the smallrig will stress the lens mount since you're using the built-in arca swiss foot of the lens for the mount.
    Is there a way where we can attach a long-ass plate on the lens AND the body (effectively turning it into one rigid unit) and use that plate for the mount? Balancing would be easier too methinks.

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually there is. SmallRig has some parts for supporting large lenses. Good idea.

      @@TheNarrowbandChannel this feels... overkill. Why not just attach a long plate onto the 100-400mm's foot via a bolt, then add risers under an arca swiss clamp that's on the other end of the long plate which in turn will clamp onto the smallrig plate?
      There are probably long arca swiss plates with a built-in clamp in the end (usually for macro work) which can simplify the rig

    Great video Ben and thank you! I have the Star Adventurer along with the same guide scope/camera you are using in your video. I have an L bracket already and was considering this cage. The problem I'm trying to solve is properly balancing the whole rig - I thought the cage might work better than the L bracket - do you have any thoughts or suggestions on balancing?

    • @TheNarrowbandChannel
      @TheNarrowbandChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Cage will give you a lot more options for sure. SmallRig has a ton of accessories for balancing stuff. They intend it for gimbals but it works for Astronomy too. And there stuff to me at least seams very affordable.

    Hi great video.
    It is soo hard to find a screen protector that can allow the camera to close fully with screen facing in. Do you have any advice. I had am a1 for years and was tired of these massive lenses for what I do so my screen was always facing outward. So is it ok to leave the screen facing outward on the om1 or is it a functional thing that the screen must face in when powered down and stored.
