When you were struggling in the Northern part of italy, you should have retreated south and formed a shield line, not just invading everywhere to no avail and splitting armies to two or three pieces. Knowing that you only have one province you should have done that, if you did do that you could have conquered Italy (or the borders of the Papal State) earlier on.
Honestly, I agree with you, but in the game there might be a chance that the Italians might attack the invading army first so that they don't have time to retreat and supply to make a shield line. Good simulation though.

The vatican city doesn't exist in original aoc2, not even with the new europe map. He's using a mod called Bloody Europe in order to get Vatican City.
