Maui Flying Saucers are the Hawaiian Hot Pocket | Quarantine Cooking

  • Chef Sheldon Simeon of Tin Roof makes one of Hawaii’s favorite fair foods: the flying saucer. These Maui Flying Saucers are the glorious love child of a sloppy Joe and a grilled cheese: tomatoey beef goulash and Kraft Singles squished between two slices of white bread, then grill-pressed over an open fire until melty and toasty. Had to click when I saw the word “flying saucer”. My husband and I grew up in the Philippines in the 70’s into the 80’s. When we met he always talked about making this back home growing up. Very nostalgic for him for sure. They had the same/very similar round griller thus the “flying saucer”.

Awesome recipe chef! I've always enjoyed your content Sheldon. Looks delicious!
Side note for those of you looking for the "toast tights" if you're in central Canada! We call them "bush pie makers" out here as you usually take them camping to slap two pieces of white bread into them and load in pie filling to crisp up over a campfire. You should be able to get them in most commerical hardware stores like Canadian Tire. Happy toastin!

Those look like pudgie pie makers! I grew up in Wisconsin and every time we would be camping or had a bonfire we would pull out the cast iron pudgie pie makers and we would make ham and cheese grilled cheese sandwiches, s'more sandwiches, and then little pies with pie filling and white bread. If y'all can't find these then maybe look up pudgie pie makers online and you'd be able to find some of those. I know it's not the same but it's close enough 😄
