Tim, you're an absolute legend for this and this series! And once again, massive Congratulations on 7000 Subscribers! Glad to see you enjoyed(?) my Towpath action, though I don't think we actually have Towpaths in Germany. Yeah, that Evo SL has become one of my favorite shoes ever. Totally understand getting annoyed by the Raffles done everywhere for it. But really is worth persisting:)
I like to weave in a bit of comedy whilst trying to make some serious points. Of course "towpath" is a common description of a surface to run on by TH-camrs which clearly is not Tarmac but on which extensive testing of shoes is often undertaken and sometimes resulting in mud on heels resulting in either the need for lots of cleaning and/or the presentation of your 2nd box fresh pair for discussing the merits of the laces and the tongue.
I am enjoying your news reels. Thank you. It’s also very kind to pay attn and give kudos to others-so kudos to you for your opening our eyes to other runners we may not have found. ❤🏆
Everyone should give Michael Ottesen a follow, he’s trying to win $10k in one year in prize money hence the top 10 goal, it’s a great series to follow and he’s a great guy!
Ah now you mention it, I do vaguely recall mention of that but did not really understand the context. Is the year a calendar one and so about to finish? Guess will look out for his race recap video to hear more.
@ it’s a 12 month period, think he started around April/May so still a few months to go and think he’s just under half way with the prize money. He did win a marathon a couple of months ago and got a free trip to Japan but he’s not including those kind of perks
A cracking round up once again Tim. Shout out to Luke Talbot for being a true warrior! Great to see some nice tow path action featured too. Some would say those Evo SLs were ruined. 😎🤘
I heard one of the draws of the CIM is it being end of year with other elites/semi-elites bringing healthy competition, cooler conditions, to help them run good times. Definitely looks a good one. And well done on your 7k !! I have no issue with the 12 yr old and the likes running marathons, providing they are not forced, they want to do it, and the supporting adults around have the best interests.
Yeah seemingly like Valencia in that respect but on the side of the pond. I guess the "providing..." bits are the ones generally rules/laws for minors exist to stop any such "doubt". Think my main puzzlement is why there such a variety in the rules from country to country.
Indeed yes. I watched his full video and sounds like he was actually "lucky" to not have a very serious injury and he said so himself. Clearly has shaken him up however as indeed it surely would anybody.
CIM is not world record eligible because it's a point to point. (the reason why point to point races aren't eligible is to keep downhill races out of consideration, so maybe it's a distinction that doesn't make a difference)
Ah good point. There is an elevation and separation criteria as I recall. I think London only just passes on the separation one. Point to point would also be because of possible wind assistance. CIM does look net downhill as well though although probably not hugely significant. I see Strava only marginally has GAP pace "faster" than actual on say Matt Fox's Strava.
I think a better measure of whether a channel is popular is to look at number of views on the videos. You get a couple of thousand views or several thousand on a lot of yours Tim which shows the quality and interest of them. I think that's a better measure than number of subscribers. Subscriber numbers can be high, but if views are low 🤷🏼♀️ Your shorts of Sue unboxing running shoes are hilarious. Her reaction to cost, style and whether they will make you run faster is brilliant 😂....more Sue appearances please
Many thanks! Yeah TBH views, view durations and good comments (like your one!) on my videos are more motivating for me and feel gives an inherent feedback. I do the "Like & Subscribe and all that" at the end more as a joke really as always found it a turnoff if somebody does that much earlier in a video. Of course some video topics will always be more popular than others so I do like to try different things and feel have "succeeded" if I am not "embarassed" watching it back as it were. I have got 3 boxes of shoes for Sue to "inspect". I am trying to persuade her to come and do so before she chucks them (and/or me) out anyway !
Yeah like you said, I don’t think it was on purpose, but just one of those things that can happen. Slow recovery process but all things considered, it could’ve been much worse! Great video per usual 🙌🏼
Thanks for dropping by and hope you are continuing to make progress. It seems that pro cyclists are forever breaking collar bones and touchwood they seem to get back to it reasonably quickly afterwards. You certainly don't want somebody catching your Achilles like what happened to Callum Elson at the start of this year.
@ Yeah the Callum Eldon situation last winter was crazy, I’m very thankful that didn’t happen! But it does seem like the collarbone is a quicker recovery than many other breaks so hopeful to get back to full training soon 🤞🏼
Regarding TH-cam and subscriptions - for some, subs are merely a by-product of a hobby or passion, but for others they're an end in themselves. Realistically, I expect most people probably sit somewhere between those two extremes, though I have little doubt that someone who cares more about the quantity of subs than the quality to be in it more for the adulation. Great series as always.
Thanks. Yeah for me it is largely a case of it is what it is. Always nice to have more of anything but with the odd exception of Sue unboxing some of her own shoes I try and keep to running related topics and anyway you could argue you could run in any shoe.
I suppose the Donato approach is "grow the channel at any cost", which tells me all I need to know about Donato (whoever they are). The beauty of your round-up is that I know which channels to avoid, without having to waste my time watching them. Reminds me of Irish author Flann O'Brien's "bookhandling service" which he jokingly offered to rich people who wanted to look "well-read". He would thumb through all the books in their library for them and break a few book spines, so that they lost their "new and obviously unread" appearance. I am the uneducated "running TH-cam channels viewer" who can't be bothered to watch them to find out the good ones.
Ah nice story on Flann O'Brien. I guess I largely mainly only really cover the channels I already watch regularly and/or have started to. Even then feel sure different channels appeal to different people and indeed some videos too. Donato is a very good M60 road runner in relative terms and has several England Masters vests.
Thanks Tim, great video again. I agree with your view that the young runner is obviously talented but what is her route from here if already racing marathons? I think the traditional method of improving at 1500/cross country first is better for longevity in the sport. In those disciplines perhaps she's not as successful re places/awards?
I guess there is the also the question of what "success" means when effectively you have no peers to race. On the flip side I "dragged out" moving from "1500/XC" to the marathon until I was 37 LOL so you seem a happy medium. Track/XC in USA seems very popular at High School level and got to assume a 12 year old would have a good 3 or 4 years of very competitive racing at "manageable" distances. Maybe she does that as well anyway.
Ah interesting. I wonder what the permission acceptance criteria is. As I alluded to the 9 year old boy that I saw in the results was outside 6 hours and hardly seems in the same ability range as the 12 year old girl Evan Kim doing the 2:55. Even so not sure I understand why the World Athletics rules can be overridden by a long way on these ages.
Another interesting round up Tim. Is there some form of needle between Nick Bester and Matt Fox? I've watched a few of Nick Bester's videos but don't know much about Matt Fox.
Matt runs the Sweat Elite channel. The original idea was to film the training of elite athletes. Matt seems to be doing a lot more about himself now which TBH I find more interesting in a lot of ways especially as he was a former national level 800m runner (1:47 PB I think) and now 2:18 marathoner. I did/do both but slower! Nick & Matt did together appear in a few videos couple of years ago. Now they don't....
I feel the Man Flu thing, not left the house since Monday, Fever, nothing to eat, and definitely no running! I think I've written myself off for the 7 days.
I have been "out" for a few strolls and it helped a bit but I certainly don't feel like running yet and I am on essentially day 8 of it now (last Thursday was my first "day off" run wise to today Friday). At least my temperature has gone now and am now blowing my nose anywhere as much but still feel bunged up generally. Hope you feel better soon. I have learnt over the years best to wait until feel reasonable before trying to run as otherwise it can just stretch it out for weeks.
@TimGrose By the way Tim, I recognised your name for years before TH-cam - you are on a number of Segments along the Cuckoo Trail between Eastbourne/Hailsham/Heathfield 😀
@@mattsoutham ah yes when I was training for my first marathons in 2004 & 2005 I often combined my passion for running on old railways with some solid "goal pace" on them which was then sub 6 pace and indeed quicker on the downhill direction from Heathfield where usually started from but sometimes started from the other end say from Polegate. Forerunners back then (I had the 201 then 301) had rather poor GPS compared to now but at least think were good enough to show that I was once faster than I am now LOL !
12 year olds train for Olympic gymnastics, are members of Liverpool or Real Madrid youth football academies, play in orchestras that tour the world, act in films and plays... I think as long as the kid is enthusiastic and not being abused, what's the issue with running marathons at that age?
Seems though now that you have to be at least 16 to be an Olympics gymnast en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_requirements_in_gymnastics and as I mentioned you can't run a marathon major until 18 AFAIK. I guess there are plenty of things you can't do until an "adult" largely to remove any possibility of what you mention.
@@MrCurly360 I looked at episode #11 and couldn't see anything about Nick Bester in the contents. HOWEVER, in that episode, I did see that Matt talked about "influencer" Matt Choi getting a well-deserved lifetime ban from NY Marathon for breaking their rules. THEN I Googled Matt Fox to find out who he is and found an article by Brett Larner saying that Matt Fox received a lifetime ban from the Ageo Marathon in Japan in November 2023 for breaking their rules by racing with another person's number! Whodathoughtit?!
Tim you have best, most relevant content. If you want more subscribers I think you need to include a cute dog or cat (I can lend you one) or regularly show yourself making/drinking tea or coffee. Just throw in a pic of dog/cat in a Christmas outfit in the thumbnail and don’t include them in the content for an A/B test. 😂
@@paulk7663 ha ha thanks. I need to feature Daisy my cat more then. She was clipping at my heels early on in this wondering why i was not feeding her !
About the age thing I think The marathon it’s kinda like where do you go from there but I used to always take my son when he was small a little five case you know turkey trot and 110 K he did when he was kind of young I mean, I can’t remember. He wasn’t seven but you know he was young And he enjoyed it now there is a kid from California. That’s Ron now he’s 1414 or 15 and he’s run 100 K up towards the mountains too, but he was with his dad the whole time and walked all the hills. It was nothing like dangerous, but I don’t believe in legislating stuff because I would rather see a young kid out running and doing stuff like that versus whatever other mischief stick again this is my point of view.
Guess the "problem" is that not everybody will be like you and maybe push their kids too much too soon especially if they show some signs of being "good".
I think on the age grading for the 12 year old, is it possible that they (Howard Grubb?) never really envisaged 12 year olds running marathons (for good reason!!) and so the data doesn’t extrapolate too well for her. I would have thought it was way more than 87%. But then again I think a 12 year old training for marathons is wrong anyway. Yeah, Donato is a very good age group runner and he should focus his channel on running. I think the usual thing to do if you want to post on other topics is to set up separate channel and somehow think of a brand connection that can associate the two. I recall The Runner (formerly known as The Vegan Runner) doing something similar and I think folk started losing interest in his channel because it lost focus and subscribers didn’t know what he was about anymore.
There are some age bests at www.arrs.run/SA_Mara.htm and so some data to go on. I see a 10 year old girl has ran a sub 3 for instance! As such the age graded of 87.4% for a 12 year old girl doing 2:55:xx is probably "about right". Didn't want to upset Donato but really highlight this "news" but be interesting to hear his take.
@@jefreywith1f924 Thanks. I found his own website page on that and it seems St. George where he ran it is a hugely downhill course so "rightly" probably disallowed from that ARRS list. Otherwise not sure other than list what else there is to go on to declare what is "best" or not. Still good to see somebody who carried on running into adulthood as it were.
I commented politely on Evans Instagram page as I think she's way too young to run a marathon and will burn out. I also commented about was her time an official time and seemingly it's legit. The Dad ran with her I think. A lot of people agreed and her Dad politely commented thanking for my opinion.
It's a very tricky subject as I feel a 12 year old good enough to run 2:55 clearly has massive talent and needs every encouragement but is the marathon really the best place until fully explored shorter distances. Plus of course, as I mentioned, you could not run a marathon at this age in many countries including UK where I am from. I am even more unconvinced 9 years old should be doing marathons and especially if take over 6 hours.
Her Dad did not run with her, she ran with big brother Cole for quite a while, until he fell back with stomach issues, Evan then ran herself to the finish.
Congratulations on the 7k subs. Cheers to the old guys! Who are we to say what is too young or old to run a marathon? Personally, if someone asked me, I'd say focus on the shorter distances until your body is fully mature, before you inflict upon it the rigors of marathon training and racing. The risks WAY out weigh the rewards at that age. Hopefully she is able to handle it and doesn't burn out mentally/physically or both by 20 or earlier.
Yeah obviously outside an official race anybody can do what they like. In races there seems to be different rules operating in some parts of the world to others and in CIM it is perfectly fine to run as per the rules. Whether it is a good idea is of course just then an opinion.
@@TimGrose my sister-in-law's son ran his first HM (Houston Marathon, HM) and full marathon (The Woodlands Marathon) in Jan and March respectively. I guess here in the US, it is up to the individual event organizers and as long as you (or his parents in this case) sign the medical waiver all good for them. Obviously, he did not run like that girl. She was at a different level. I wonder if she will be motivated to continue running at this level as she grows up. My relative will do another HM in Jan but he is living a normal kid life otherwise.
@@TolunayOrkun Interesting. I tried to see what the "actual" rules are. USATF seems to imply need to be 16 to run a marathon in US under their rules and it is 18 AFAIK in all the "majors" worldwide as it is in any UK race. CIM says it is run under USATF rules and is a BQ eligible race and yet I could not see anything about "under age" runners. I even partially filled in an entry for a 4 year old and seemed to get to the point of payment. There clearly were only a few under 16 in CIM and not many under 18 either but am puzzled how any under 16s can run if USATF rules suggest otherwise. OK you might argue the very good 12 year old might have some dispensation on ability but could not see any clause in the USATF to permit that and besides the other very young runners were generally way slower and not seemingly child prodgies.
What do people think about Nick Bare? I also come from lifting, so I'm pretty familiar with how things works and I'm 99% sure that dude is juiced to the gills. I know being a fake natty on the lifting side of youtube is culturally acceptable, but it really bothers me that he's becoming part of the running community. It really disappointed me that Floberg is so closely tied to him. I used to really enjoy his content, but I'll just always question any performance gains when the athlete is promoting supplements from a fake natty influencer.
Always a tricky subject and I never like to assume anybody is on anything until shown to be. From a pure running POV his performances are obviously "good" but easy to find lots of runners and indeed TH-camrs way way faster. From what I can recall the level of his running training has evolved to the required level IMHO regardless of your body shape - self elected or otherwise. Plus Jeff Cunningham his coach is well regarded IMHO and seems to know how to get the best out of Nick. That all said seeing both those runners looking at a whole bunch of "nutrition" products before and after runs isn't compelling me to go and buy any of them.
@@TimGrose Yeah. That's my biggest issue too. I used to consume a lot of lifting content and that side of youtube just seems so much greasier than the relatively wholesome running content I watch now. I can quit watching and just ignore Floberg, but I'm just worried of what happens when the incentives become too strong for running youtubers to start doping and then attribute their success to legal supplements they sell. All the honest brokers get shuffled out and it just all turns into one big grift.
@@JRuns Ironically the running videos when somebody does not do that well relatively in a race often get very high views. More "relatable". Guess also at my level these days aiming for say a sub 3 marathon or more recently a sub 20 5K isn't "easy" but if people feel the need to try and attain those only "modest" standards in any other way than legally got to wonder why they are doing so.
@TimGrose bad incentive structure as well. If young marathoners get famous it may inspire other parents to force their kids into marathon running too soon
We don't pay much heed to the number of subscribers. It's nice to have people along but I take pleasure in people watching and engaging with our videos. And yes we can't all be Allie Ostrander and her and Spencer are a lovely couple. But keep on being yourself as that is true personality.
Yes I have noticed that although your subs aren't "high" you are getting good views on your videos now (mostly my benchmark of at least 1K) and good comments too. Always feel it is a "worry" if put out something and hardly anybody comments. Good luck for Telford 10K on Sunday. My manflu is lingering. At this rate, I will be "fresh" for Bourton due to lack of training!
@vikroy3777 the last three parkrun videos have all been easy runs showcasing the course and town. But as Abraham Lincoln said, you can't please all the people all of the time.
I stopped watching that channel of the 10 year old runner. Her dad pushes her too much and hard. He also complained that the Boston Marathon doesn’t allow runners under 18. That rule is to protect kids from their parents. TH-cam profiting from his daughter. She is a burnout waiting to happen.
Great stuff. thanks.

Hi Tim, Really don't think running marathons at 12 is a good thing! I wonder if she will still be running in 10 years?
Yeah doesn’t feel right does it and while hope so in 10 years that seems a while away and lot can happen in those years.
@TimGrose
Golden Harper, founder of Altra Footwear, holds the world record for a 12 yr. old in the marathon at 2:45:34
@@jefreywith1f924 Thanks.
@@jefreywith1f924 ah found age-records.125mb.com/ too
@TimGrose
His whole family, including his father, mother, and 3 sisters, holds state records in running.
Sounds to me like it's none of your business
@@vikroy3777 I think we all can have an opinion on anything especially running related.
@@TimGrose when it comes to people's children, I stand by my comment
Quite a lot of nattering gossip here
Lots of comments from you today. Am I missing the mark for you on these videos?
@TimGrose no I commented on someone else's post and I'm beginning to think you thought I was talking to you. Are you drunk?
@@vikroy3777 nope! what is "nattering gossip" about then?
I don't think someone on TH-cam is part of the 'running community', just focus on your own health and those you run with.
@@TimGroseyou have just nailed it!! It was a good performance but not great. Still I believe he’s on the gear.
12 is way too young to be doing a marathon. Personally I think even at 18 you're too young for the marathon.
Yeah it does seem so. Still I was never as talented. Took me until 37 and after 20 years as a middle distance runner to manage to do a marathon.
After my last marathon I came to the conclusion that 65 must be too young!
The more I think about it the more strongly I dislike the idea of kids racing marathons
Yeah it doesn't "feel" right to me either.
You have quite the fanatical attitude to parkrun being a race ime, kind of put me off
@vikroy3777 the last three parkrun videos have all been easy runs showcasing the course and town. But as Abraham Lincoln said, you can't please all the people all of the time.
@@tworunningbrooms John and Dawn are legends. Parkrun not a race?

I stopped watching that channel of the 10 year old runner. Her dad pushes her too much and hard. He also complained that the Boston Marathon doesn’t allow runners under 18. That rule is to protect kids from their parents. TH-cam profiting from his daughter. She is a burnout waiting to happen.
Ah thanks for sharing that. Let's hope she is still running at 18 and beyond.
