Well had it not been for the spy shenanigans Mater got involved in, Lightning would've won. Also, why didn't Mater tell Holley he needed to help his friend who was literally out racing? Why didn't he take off his headset? And why didn't Lightning turn off his radio where Mater's actions were interfering with his race? Losing a race all because of a simple miscommunication was just not worth getting upset about. While I understood Lightning's distress, he definitely took his outburst too far by disowning Mater. But at least they both apologize to each other later on in London.
Same. I feel like I should hate this movie a lot more than I do, but I saw it on my 8th birthday and it’s one of my favorite birthdays and the moments we actually do get racing are pretty enjoyable.
Damn, Mater was gonna sacrifice his own life to save McQueen, because he couldn't figure out how to deactivate the bomb. Truly heroic. Ps: I mean, he wanted him to stay away, knowing damn well he (Mater) would have died in the process, i mean, give Mater some respect.

It's just nice to see some appreciation for a movie that is hated by so many! (even though I still like the first one better) thanks for this reaction and thank you that you make your own opinion! Hopefully cars 3 won't let you down too much, since mater has only a few moments in that movie (but they are still awesome) but I love on what they focus in cars 3 and that movie is actually pretty emotional and has a really good message and celebrates the character of doc hudson - can't wait for that! ^^
I love that they used actual motorsports icons as voice actors in this movie. For example the actor for Hamilton Is Lewis Hamilton a 7 time Formula 1 World Champion. They really did their homework
This movie is such a guilty pleasure for me, given the fact that it came out during my huge Cars phase when I was 7 lol. It's just overall a fun time and has an actually incredible soundtrack that a lot of people overlook.
Doc’s VA Paul Newman sadly died some time after the first movie, and they didn’t feel right replacing him. So they wrote it in that he died after three seasons of being Lightning’s crew chief. (Which would have made the Piston Cup that Lightning won in this movie the first without him. ❤️) They would continue that absolutely love letter to Newman in the third Cars, but I’m sure will get to that soon. 😊 Honestly the best part in this movie for me was the epic world building. And Francesco. And Michael Caine car. 😂 I think people are way too hard on it.
A tiny fun fact, I have watched the movie in German and the German voice for Finn is the voice for German James Bond, This makes this all even funnier noticing that Finn is mean to represent an Aston Martin DB5, James Bond’s most iconic car and that he talks like bond for example naming is surname first and then first Name while introducing himself
Cars 3 was disappointing to me because it seemed to retcon this entire movie. It was like an insult to Cars 2 fans. If they ever make Cars 4, I’m really hoping they bring back Finn and Holley, and Michael Giacchino’s music score. To all Cars 2 fans: don’t be afraid to speak up on the internet about your unpopular opinions. If enough people are talking about it, it could become a cult classic.
I love all of them even tho i don't like the fact that Cars 3 writers wanted to erase everything that happened in the 2nd movie. If they ever make Cars 4 I wouldn't need the spy theme again but i would want Holley to be with Mater or at least Mater using his gadgets that he got to keep.

It's so wonderful to see another person who loves Cars 2! Mater might not be my top favourite, but I still love him a lot. I don't care what the darn haters think or say, Cars 2 is underrated and wonderful (why yes, I do consider it one of the better Pixar films too, even if it wasn't Toy Story 3). I think it's amazing that Pixar really went out of their comfort zone to try something new, and while I understand the apprehension with Mater as a main character, I think he was very well done in this. This film made me respect Mater and look at him in a new light. I also really like the moral of this story: be yourself and don't change for others. I think this is important, especially in today's world that claims you should be yourself and yet they expect you to fit every check in this one category. And all in all it's such a fun and hilarious film! Seeing you enjoy it so much made me happy, I love your reactions and I felt like I was watching it right there with you! Thank you so much! Bless!

The junior novelisation of Cars 2 titled "Fueled For Adventure" (which is written from Finn's POV) mentions that Finn actually did suspect at one point that Mater wasn't a spy, but didn't say anything. By that point it was most likely too late to do anything since Mater already knew too much, and they didn't really have much of a choice. Additionally, Finn most likely didn't want Holley to worry and was probably still grieving over Leland. Like the scene where Mater is in the casino and Finn says "He's so good." It's most likely he was trying to convince himself (and Holley) that Mater was doing a good job when he knew deep down they had a potential civilian in too deep.
Sadly, Paul Newman who voiced Doc passed away in 2008 so couldn’t be in this movie. Breaks my heart not having him in this movie as he is my favourite actor

Listen, don't know about you guys, but I freaking love spy movies and cars, seeing it together is kinda smart. Paul Newman was the voice actor for Doc Hudson. He passed away in 2008 just 2 years after Cars 1 was released and 3 years before Cars 2. He was in middle of recording scenes for the sequel but those scenes are now in Cars 3 as flashbacks. Cars 3 was released in 2017. George Carlin was the voice actor of Fillmore and he also died in 2008. Joe Raft was the voice of Red the fire truck and the semi truck from Cars 1 when McQueen was lost, he died in 2005.
Honestly Cars 2 isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Honestly I like the near twists of the spy triller genre involving vehicles. Plus there was still quite a bit of racing in it.
I honestly didn’t mind that McQueen became a side character. 🙂 There are a lot of Disney sequels where side characters become main characters (e.g. Finding Dory, Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, Lion King 1-1/2, Kronk’s New Groove). It really just depends on how much you like that particular character. I liked Mater enough to think this movie was great. 😁
I'm glad you and a whole lot of other people here enjoyed this film, and even I don't think it's terrible per se, it's just that the reason this got a lot of flack is because Pixar usually has such high standards with most of their movies at the time (especially the one before this) being considered masterpieces, that a more silly kid friendly spy story had most of us thinking "Really Pixar? This is the best you could come up with?" Heck, Finding Dory went on to have similar elements to this, and I personally think that film did them better.
Cars 2 really is an amazing movie and takes up a special place in my heart. I'm glad you liked it too, and I wish they would have called it Cars: Mater's Secret Mission. I give Cars 2 FIVE FIRES all the way!
It was kind of out of place, but still fits in to the Cars universe pretty well and I think I love it for the risks it took. You just have to think of it as a Mater's Tall Tale Movie, and you'll probably like it better!
If you liked Cars 2 I recommend Spies In Disguise it’s a way better animated spy movie. The pigeon plot works both comedy wise and drama wise believe it or not. The main characters side characters and villain are well developed. The animation is amazing providing proper spy action. It’s also way funnier and more touching than Cars 2 with Will Smith and Tom Holland’s great performances. Spies In Disguise straight up works as an animated spy movie. Cars 2 is as bad as people say IMO.
since Mater's your favorite you should know that there are also Cars shorts where Mater tells all kinds of crazy stories from his life that may or may not be made up, I bet you'd enjoy those
Even though Cars 2 was a huge commercial success, a number of people didn't like it for several reasons, but it's great to see you embraced its craziness and actually enjoyed it! Cars 3 is when things actually get better. 😄
Hot Take: I have a strong dislike for the Cars universe in general, but this is easily the best one. I found it engaging, I actually cared about the characters, and unlike the other two I really didn't have any point where I had to stop and ask really uncomfortable questions about how this setting actually works.
The whole airport scene was supposed to have a comic subplot about talking planes, but it got so long, Pixar decided to spin the idea off separately into the first direct-video "Planes" movie.
Okay, but heads up. Since Pixar had got a bad reputation from this movie, they had to tone down mater for the next film. He still has some screen time, but everything that was told in this film, is completely erase in the 3 one.

George Carlin was the voice actor of Fillmore and he also died in 2008. Joe Raft was the voice of Red the fire truck and the semi truck from Cars 1 when McQueen was lost, he died in 2005.

Honestly Cars 2 isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Honestly I like the near twists of the spy triller genre involving vehicles. Plus there was still quite a bit of racing in it.

I honestly didn’t mind that McQueen became a side character. 🙂 There are a lot of Disney sequels where side characters become main characters (e.g. Finding Dory, Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, Lion King 1-1/2, Kronk’s New Groove). It really just depends on how much you like that particular character. I liked Mater enough to think this movie was great. 😁

I'm glad you and a whole lot of other people here enjoyed this film, and even I don't think it's terrible per se, it's just that the reason this got a lot of flack is because Pixar usually has such high standards with most of their movies at the time (especially the one before this) being considered masterpieces, that a more silly kid friendly spy story had most of us thinking "Really Pixar? This is the best you could come up with?"
Heck, Finding Dory went on to have similar elements to this, and I personally think that film did them better.

It was kind of out of place, but still fits in to the Cars universe pretty well and I think I love it for the risks it took. You just have to think of it as a Mater's Tall Tale Movie, and you'll probably like it better!
If you liked Cars 2 I recommend Spies In Disguise it’s a way better animated spy movie. The pigeon plot works both comedy wise and drama wise believe it or not. The main characters side characters and villain are well developed. The animation is amazing providing proper spy action. It’s also way funnier and more touching than Cars 2 with Will Smith and Tom Holland’s great performances. Spies In Disguise straight up works as an animated spy movie. Cars 2 is as bad as people say IMO.
Btw since Paul Newman has passed away in 2008 they had to kill off Doc Hudson stating that he's dead in the sequel

When you asked what happened to Doc, the actor who voiced Doc in the first Cars film died before Cars 2. So I believe Doc died.
Yup he did. Paul Newman (voice of Doc Hudson) died of lung cancer in 2008.

Hot Take: I have a strong dislike for the Cars universe in general, but this is easily the best one. I found it engaging, I actually cared about the characters, and unlike the other two I really didn't have any point where I had to stop and ask really uncomfortable questions about how this setting actually works.
You should watch "Kubo And the two strings". It's amazing.
