Sandblasting and priming the steel trawler hull

- In this video I do some final repairs to the hull before it gets sandblasted and I put some Altex primer on it. I also give it a wash with Chlor-Rid Hold*Blast before painting so I can do some pad welding on the transom before it flash rusts.

I have loved watching this journey you are going through. I am sure you are excited to captain the boat and get out on the water again, but watching everything that it takes to get there is what makes it more meaningful to me.

Preparation is everything. Think you win on that hands down. Good to see the knowledge going into selecting the paint products, to protect the boat. Oh, and leave the transom. Life is too short. That's a big job, cutting out, crane in new transom (not to mention cost), weld in bulkheads, etc.
For sure, replacing that transom would be at least a week and $1000.
One of the lessons I've learned detailing my cars is that you can't always do every big project at once. If the interior needs a deep clean, just give the outside a wash and call it good until the next time. Trying to tackle everything at once makes it hard to focus and spend the time to get a good result in the area that needs the most work. I think what you're doing with the transom is a great idea. Focus on the crucial motor out stuff now and come back in a few years to tackle the next big project on the list. Great job.
I agree completely. There is always next year, it's not like it all has to happen now and to be honest, this isn't the ideal location. Next year I'll put it in a steel-friendly boat yard.
It’s so satisfying to see the project progressing and I suppose it peak and trough scenario where you go through the pain before your on the up and can see light at the end of the tunnel. Keep up the good work mate and can’t wait for the next one👍

I'll never have a steel boat but I am loving these vedios. I like your streight forward no BS aproch and watching an average person fix things A to save money B because they enjoy it C for the sense of accomplishment and D because the don't mind working and getting a little dirty.
I think you are doing a great job with the boat and have your priorities on what needs to be dune versus what what you would like to do set in the proper order.

I love this video segment. I think you are rational and making great decisions about your project and explain well your thinking and the process. I enjoy the fact that you are a great example of an "autodidact". I recommend you and your audience study people who are "autodidacts" and how they helped humanity and discovered and invented stuff that was amazing and helped humans live more comfortability. In your later videos I recommend you add links to direct your viewer back to this video to show you are taking expert advice from industry experts and adding the ideas to improve the outcome of your project.

Nice perspective on doing it your "own right way". I built my first steel yacht at 20... about 34 years ago now with some help & guidance from Dad, , lots of things I do differently now but wouldn't change the learning curve. Really liking your vids all the best from Jeff.

Love the video, as an old maritime Captain I am interested the process, my only suggestion would be to number the videos so we can watch them in order. I'm pretty sure I'm watching them in order from my own personal experience but it would still be nice.
Well you answered my questions about the hull pitting. Apparently the vast majority was mainly just fowling build up. Really enjoy your videos. I will have to travel to au. To charter your boat when you are finished. Put me on your wait list. I will even buy the beer.

I have only worked on small fresh water boats all of this is foreign to me but i love all of these videos. Shout out to the Northern Kentucky Bass hasslers!!!!

I have worked on a lot of steel boats, usually we blast the entire hull, then coat in a product called Rust Bullet, then go about isolating repair areas. Reblast around the repair areas, weld, blast and Rust Bullet again. When all repairs are completed, epoxy barrier coat and topcoat/anti foul as needed....A small spot blaster would save you a shitload of grinding.....

The antifouling that was identified is an ablative coating, meaning it wears away over time. For ablative paints it's very helpful to apply the coats in contrasting colors. This allows the coating to be touched up where the "under coat " color shows. This approach maximizes the life of the coating as it only needs to be recoated in areas where it's seen to wear away. Yes, I think that is a great way to go. I'll have to ask him if they can supply at least two different colours.
That epoxy paint system sounds like a good way to go. Cleaning up the engine space when the motor is out is a must! Dealing with it now is just so easy, over trying to do it after the motor is back in. We use to paint the engine room sides and bulkheads white and the floor or hull a light gray with sand blasting sand rolled into the paint for nonskid. This works well in decks too and it's easy on bare feet too.

Those old two stroke units are sinfully easy to rebuild, so I've heard.

Used the Altex system on my boat - epoxy undercoat - 2 pot polyurethane. Worked great. The high build undercoat goes on pretty thick and chalky so worked great as a final faring layer. The 2 pot poly is nice and hard. Great finish.

Hi mate, great to see! The pitty parts ye can fill with debrasil, its 2 component, same ratio as polyester, but the A. COmponent is Ferro parts in it...it hardens very fast and becomes as hard as metal... so you fill in all the tiny and bigger holes in one go, i restored the bow of a steal ship that way, thanks for the nice restauration videos, Bob the Belgian🇧🇪🍺

I've been following this whole project each week and I'm happy for you that it's coming along nicely. You've put a TON of work into it and it really shows! I'm a big fan of reviving old vehicles or machines regardless of how much complaining I do along the way. In the end you have a deep knowledge of the vehicle or machine and a connection to it for lack of a better word. The pride in knowing you fixed it and made it yours is a great feeling. Excellent work. I'm excited to see the final results. You're going to have what I would call "a real boat" that I too dream of having some day.

Your pad welding is a fabulous idea to upgrade your transom pox marks :) Not needed structurally, but great work. It will look great once you layer your epoxy finish coats.

That full-face shield/respirator looks like it works well when you are laying on your back cutting/grinding !

I'm really happy with that shield / respirator. It is the first thing I have found that is comfortable and quick to put on.
This boat is going to be awesome when done. I am sure you will be using it a great deal in the years to come.

if your doing square patches ,, make the patch first , then cut round it , and your hole will match the patch with a perfect space round it for welding ,, handy way of going.

I had a whiskey drinking red injun welding for me on oil rigs for 15 years; as his eyesight and hands deteriorated thru the fire water drinking he used his gloved right hand to feel the weld out with amazing results..

I love this boat project and this has been my favorite episode yet. Seems like it’s really getting close to being a real boat again!
Looking better each video Stu, got to say though, I would spray all the coatings on, better coats, more even coats, far better finish and so much faster to do. I am saying this because I have been involved in the spraying market for over 25yrs and it's so much easier than rolling or brushing.
Airless spraying would be a great way to go but just another thing I would have to get set up for or pay someone to do.
