This song is inspired by the people in his mothers church congregation, whom Maynard overheard speak about his mothers affliction having been placed upon her as some sort of punishment for past transgressions. And the song embodies that feeling he has for the believers and their way of thinking.

This is true. On the APC dvd/cd amotion ,which has all their videos, you can select an option to hear either Maynard or Billy explain the song. I always thought he was angry at his mother in the song until I heard him explain it. Most fans still believe he’s angry at her in the song.

APC is a project that has gone concurrently with Tool, which was started by Tool's guitar tech Billy Howerdel who showed some of his songs to Maynard. This is from their first album (Mer de Noms) which came out in 2000, a year before Tool released Lateralus. They have 4 albums, the 3rd is cover songs, and the last one was just released in 2018. A few songs to perhaps check out: 3 Libras, Weak and Powerless, When the Levee Breaks (cover), The Outsider, and The Doomed. Definitely more straightforward and less prog than Tool, but worth your time. Cheers Erol.

2 Tool songs are about his mother as well:
    - Jimmy, about when he was 11 and taken away from his mother because she couldn't care for him anymore.
    - Wings For Mary, Part I & II, kind of an eulogy for his mother which will tear you up if you read the lyrics.
Highly recommendable and it shows Maynard's growth after "Judith"

IMO, it's a band on it's own, the only thing similar between APC and Tool is MJK. This song is just a little "heavier" for APC. Excellent song for sure. "3 Libras" is my favorite APC song, and some of Maynard's best singing.

  • @pedromarques2077

APC (short for A Perfect Circle) is a more straighforward band then Tool, in the sense that they fit more in the alternative rock genre. The band over the years had several iterations in the line-up with several different talented musicians, with Maynard and Billy Howerdel being the only constant. Their catalogue is quite interesting and as time went on Maynard wrote some of his more political oriented lyrics for APC. Tool is and always will be a whole other level, but APC is well worth the deep dive as well.

Possibly my favorite hard rock song. With Tool not being prolific and long periods of time between albums and tours it has afforded Maynard time to have 2 side projects APC and Pucifer( which Maynard states that it his alter ego) along with starting and successfully building a Winery in northern Arizona. APC is different musically from Tool but equally as good. Alot of songs are way softer than Judith but very lush. Pucifer on the other hand totally different, with comedy/ sarcasm especially in the videos. All three bands are worth your time, and as you explore more your appreciation for the talent and artistry of MJK will only grow along with all involved in the 3 bands. There is also a great doc on you tube about MJK's Vineyard/ Winery.

Thanks, Erol. Great reaction. Watching your facial expressions when you're "feeling" the music makes me smile.
Did anyone tell you that Maynard named a bottle of wine from his vinyard after his mom? Monumental stuff. This song always reminds me of how amazing Maynard's vocals are, and what a complex and emotive guy he really is.
And on a side note, at 5:53... "use it as a useful TOOL"....no pun intended, right?😂😂 Love it, Erol, love it!!

The relationship between Maynard and his mother features prominently in his lyrics(at least in the first 4 albums and some of the side stuff) ... I have a playlist that features Jimmy, Judith, The Patient, and ends with Wings for Marie(mom was Judith-Marie) 1&2 it is a beautiful chronical of their relationship and how he was traumatized by her illness and how their relationship was strained by her faith... not to mention the family and all the messed up stuff... but in the end they made amends and his love for her is evident in Wings it is a beautiful goodbye that makes me cry every time...

There's a Rick Beato video about this song where he deconstruct it, because Billy Howerdel (the lead guitar and producer of A Perfect Circle) gave him the master files. There's also a play along videoof Billy talking about the song, how it was composed and recorded, while playing it. He said that the guitar were layered in the studio I believe 16 times

No, this band is not an "off-shoot" of Tool. This is actually Billy Howerdel's (the lead guitarist) band and Maynard is just a continuing guest singer... It's honestly a band full of other famous musicians as every member in each lineup are from famous bands. Freese is one of the most famous session drummers of all time, Paz is, of course, from the Pixies, Zwan, and a whole lot more, and all the other band members throughout the years are all famous in their own right (you should lookup the band lineup and timeline on wikipedia...). Billy himself has a couple of bands and was a guitar tech for Tool for a while. Maynard gets lots of the credit, of course, being the famous front-man he is, but this is Billy's baby...

Another APC that I absolutely love is The Outsider, another song that is great lyrically and musically. Highly recommend. I will suggest doing the reaction, and then on your spare time listen to the live version that has like 8mil views because it is exceptionally well executed. Like, it really comes to show that Maynard has a great voice that can be undistinguishable when comparing studio or live recording.

Totally agree!!! The Outsider is so amazing….working through layers of care & concern, attempting to understand, to anger & having to let go. He expresses himself in the same manner in which the man the song is about……they both ‘sing from the soul’ - which is so different than just performing. Both are my top fav frontmen ever!
