Maynard wrote this song about his anger with his mother's faith in spite of being left paralyzed due to an aneurysm and stroke. In Wings for Marie and 10000 Days, which was written a few years after this, his frustration has moved onto his mother's congregation who had blamed her condition on her sins and other things out of her control. Also in 10,000 Days, he reveres his mother as a "pillar of faith" while lambasting her congregation as "hypocrites". It's basically a song about forgiveness after a long period of animosity.

Thanks for doing this reaction. His mother's church was strict Christians and didn't believe in using modern medicine. Even though she was paralyzed she believed God would heal her. Her church even convinced her that she deserved what was happening to her. But Maynard actually apologizes to his mom for making the song before she died.

I'm a Christian. That's the first point. I've eagerly shown this song - with the lyrics - to others who share my faith to let them know exactly how wrong forgetting love for each other can go. I hate that Judith was so callously abandoned by those who should have supported her, and will never suggest that Maynard should feel any different. Those most responsible for helping were the ones that turned their backs, and I can think of no greater insult one human can lay on another. Sing loud and often MJK - this will always matter.

Just a correction: this is not "Maynard's other band", this is Billy's band with Maynard singing for him as sort of a reoccurring guest. Billy was Adam's (from Tool) guitar tech, but also had his own music. Also the other members were already famous in their own right; Paz Lenchantin (the woman) was already famous from Pixies and Josh was in Vandals and all of them have done plenty of other stuff. Troy went on to QOTSA which is another of my favorite bands you may want to check out.

Nothing will ever top how amazingly cool it is, how sick it makes Maynard and Billy and Josh and Troy look playing the song... More genius from Maynard. Judith is his Mother. The Tool album 10,000 Days refers to the length of time that she suffered from her disease. Judith is Maynard's questioning of his Mother's continued faith in God despite he being the one that did this to her. Mer De Noms and Thirteenth Step are great albums. His mother was paralised, the church said it was becasue she was a bad person. He disagrees with that whole concept that she was bad so this is why it happened and this is his disaproval for her still following the people who told her it was her fault. I relate because I lived through a similar thing I was incapable of seperating the bad people from the beliefs my mother had until I was much older.

As many have said Maynard couldn’t understand why she still prayed and believed. Billy Howerdell is amazing as is John Freese and Paz Lenchantin. APC are a different vibe. But well worth a listen. I’ve seen Tool and Puscifer , just need to see APC for the trilogy 🌀

Same here I've seen Tool many time and just caught Puscifer in Austin last year and still have yet to see APC. My wife is also into all three band much like me but she clicks with APC the most. Im one of those that feel Maynard can do no wrong.

@@justinlovince8816 I seen Tool in Dublin Ireland last year and Puscifer in Dublin this year. The weirdest best thing I ever saw 😆In order for me would be Tool, APC, Puscifer. All 3 are so different. And I’m hearing you on Maynard. He is the bomb. 😊

@@biddygow Nice yeah I'm like you as far as order of favorites. My wife's order is APC Tool then Puscifer. Puscifer show was great and I did not realize that I would like Existential Reckoning as much as I do. So far left of what Maynard usually does and I think it is great.

Maynard likes to wear wigs and dress up in different odd costumes. He’s a trip.

Hey bro, sounds like you more or less got the meaning of the song. It's a tough one, and good on you for reviewing it. It's got a lot of tough lyrics, and it's challenging for many reasons, not least of which is that the whole song asks whether god or any concept of a benevolent god could possibly exist. You were able to skillfully sidestep that controversial aspect of it and focus on the emotional and musical aspects, and you did a great job. This is obviously something written by Maynard in the wake of his mother's illness / passing, and your fidelity in the matter is not unnoticed. Cheers
