    Dang you sir!!! Where was YOUR video when I started to make my box? Ha ha ha! Guess I'll just have to make another one. Your box is exactly what I wanted to build but couldn't figure out how to do it. Might just add it on. Looks better than alright. I'd Sparthane it. I built my box out of pallets. Thanks for the idea sir!

    Planning on making something like this for my work truck. Mines a 2002 Suzuki carry. Gonna use pallet wood since we have a lot.

      be sure to waterproof the whole thing and make the lid so it will shed water away from the box.

    Looks good, you can use a marine grade polyurethane to make it water proof,

    Not bad. I plan on building my own boxes to my specs when i buy a pickup. I'm going to wrap them in galvanized sheet metal though and paint it.

    That's awesome. I never really have worked with wood but I'd love to learn the ropes. I just got done installing a tool box on my truck today(a aluminum one) and I like yours far better. It just plain looks awesome!

    Funny looking black stain! 😂🤣😂 Personally I like the way you stained it. Looks better, to me, and doesn't look like one of those cheap plastic ones! Instead of paint, go to HF, or hardware store, and get a spray can of that truck bed liner. Toughens it up and seals the wood really good! Great job! Makes me feel dumb not building one for myself!

  • @danny117hd

    Inspiration for me to do one like it. I hold my plastic box on my truck with two keyed linch pins. One at each end through the box and through hole I drilled in bed wall.

      I recommend a high quality oil based stain and to add a drip edge on the cover to shed the water away from the sides.

  • @threestarsandasling

    Nice job!! I couldn't do this in my area though... these thieves here would break into it QUICK!! I couldn't even walk into grocery store for 10 minutes without someone taking a sledge hammer or axe to it....
    Very nice job though!!

      Harden the top somehow and make a drip edge. The sun and rain will damage the top without additional hardening or maybe just a cover to keep the water out.

  • @ronswanson8141
    @ronswanson8141 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    If your screw does split the wood, you can fix it by taking out the screw and put a little hot wax or wood glue on the screw itself and a little in the screw hole, screw it back in and your cracks will be reinforced and repaired.

    Like the wood stain! What about some gas lifts, to the top up? With that, some straps to secure the rods to the underside of the lid, and a bit out reach of other shifting gear. Love the way you debate the process with yourself. Shows how indirect these projects can be. Few start with a we polished set of blueprints....

  • @lucky2knight

    You can add some struts on each end of the lid

  • @coburnlowman
    @coburnlowman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You shouldn't worry about dehydration because it'll always have plenty of rain water in it. I've built boxes like that and unless you wrap trim all the way around the top water will get in. And still it's not sure fix. looks good tho.

    • @FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure
      @FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yep this truck bed box is only good for my fishing gear anything else that shouldn't get wet won't be in there..

    • @highwatercircutrider
      @highwatercircutrider 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phil Lowman you can build water tight wood tool boxes (think wood boat ‘deck hatches’). You have to make the lid a ‘box within a box’ and caulk properly.

  • @Moonstruck-vs3bt
    @Moonstruck-vs3bt ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd like to make something like this for my chevy colorado, how did you secure it so it doesn't slide around or anything? I live in a really bad area so I'd probably need a way to lock mine in place AND lock it shut.

    • @FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure
      @FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure  ปีที่แล้ว

      I screwed it right to the bed lip and blocked it under the lip as well.. The wood box really isn't very secure but if the lid was metal that would help..

    what did you do with the box? did you paint it black ? does it fill up with water when it rains? let us know how you made out. I have been thinking of making a truck tool box for my 90 s10 . Also, can I see a close up of your dust catcher on your radial arm saw? thanks.

    • @FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure
      @FishTales-Reel-Life-Adventure  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      three years + later and the box is holding up pretty well but I should have built the lid differently to better shed the water. I drilled several weep holes in the bottom to let the water out if it leaked which it did.. I painted it with black oil-based paint which lasted about two years before it started to peel off. When I do this again I'm going side-saddle and longer

      The top needed more protection as it warped and rotted within two years. To top it with flashing tin would have help protect the wood and shed water much better. I sold the truck in 2020 but I have the tackle box in the barn.
