Thanks for posting this video, it was a great help. Repair went smooth except for a stripped nut. Keep up the good work.

I live in the uk, but I have a 2008 model so the steering fluid res is in a different place. But I’m assuming the changing of the rack is the same?

Great video, I followed it to replace the rack in my daughter's car. I couldn't pull the rack out the passenger side as you showed, I slide it side to side and pulled it out the back. The hardest part was removing the plastic clamp that held down the two steel lines. Having the jack under the subframe helped to align it and reinstall. Thanks again.

I own an 07 Focus SE that needs the R + P replaced. This video is a good resource, but I want to warn all the amateur DIY'ers LIKE MYSELF that think this repair is doable. With my tools and resources, I was able to get the old rack out. My new rack is literally stuck in the vehicle. I'm going to have to be on the phone first thing Monday morning with the local repair shops and see what they'll charge to clean up my mess. The two biggest issues with this repair is that for one, Ford gives you little room to move that rack around, and secondly, that engine cover you have to drop to access the rack requires a pro to get that back up and aligned properly. You're not doing that with a jack in your driveway. I tried that and now have a rack that's stuck hard in there. I dont have the experience or knowledge and was out of my league on this one. The good news is I had to do the PS Pump as well and was able to swap that out myself. I will never attempt the R+P swap on this car again. I spent several days rolling around in the dirt and still have to have the work completed at the shop. One tip I'll give, dont cheap out if you buy the rack yourself. Make sure you get a limited lifetime warranty. Auto Zone was where I bought my rack. It cost me $100 more than getting the cheapest reman I could find, but all the racks are reman, so cover yourself. If you have an issue 5 years out, you'll only ultimately be out the labor (unless you can DIY). I think auto repair costs are too high and Fords have their crapwagon tendencies. Even if you could DIY, why would you, that job is pure hell! Dont settle for a 3yr unless you're 100 percent sure your ownership of the vehicle is short term.

FYI I'm going to be attempting this in my garage with jack stands. The Haynes manual even states that unless you have the Ford alignment tool that you MUST clean and mark alignment lines on the sub frame pieces prior to removal or you're screwed.

Best of luck to you, I dont root against anyone. I just wanted to share my experience. I still stand by my comment that this is a very tough fix for the amateur, and anyone that is on the fence as to if they should attempt to do it on their own, probably shouldn't. I know I never will again. For my skill level, that was totally out of my league.

@@seanklingensmith7572 Yeah no worries. We just did a complete overhaul of the engine and put it back in to now need to pull the rack so I'm kinda pissed. I don't have a lift this time but I am aware of the alignment issues and do appreciate your feedback.

@@blass5506 Good for you, I dont hate. Just remember, not everyone out there is as handy as you. I stand by my take that if you lack experience, it is possible to find yourself in over your head with this repair. Now, that comment I posted was over a year ago. One thing that I can say in reflection, if I had to do it a second time, it would go much smoother having the experience. But I still dont think I would want to attempt it on my daily driver. A project car, sure. Most people work 4-5 days a week. Its not practical for someone with no experience to think they are going to do that job and have it turned around in 2-3 days. I like to do what I can to my cars, but some things I send to the shop. I classify this one as a "shop sender" and that is just my personal recommendation to the average person. I have the experience of attempting it myself to justify it.

So you use a vacuum at reservoir to suck the air out? Is that it? I’m still learning with cars.

When you can’t find a subframe replacement video so you go for the next best thing. 😂 so you need to drop the subframe essentially to get it out?

@jamesmahle1259 well I mean, technically the heat chilled is exactly what it says it shields the heat from the rack so if you don’t put it back in, you have a chance of prematurely cracking seals and what not if it even gets that hot can’t really tell you it does, but I also can’t tell you it doesn’t

Your video was extremely helpful; but typical Ford was not helpful. The people (I refuse to credit them as 'engineers') must have been pulled early out of kindergarten to work at designing these messes. No wonder Ford was shamed out of making cars anymore; so now they can concentrate on destroying their trucks and SUV's like they are doing.

While I agree with you on ford engineers being absolute morons, lol, most racks come out like this. If not worse. This is one of the easier ones I deal with.

Some jobs are definitely left to the professionals, or the way more experienced most likely if the information is not there and you can’t get to this point you should probably let somebody else try it but I don’t know your skill level. Good luck.
