      Awesome video. Did you not have to reprogram or flash the PCM or whatever? I just got mine swapped by my buddy but we never did the programming. Now the steering feels like it's hyper sensitive. Any small bump and it sets it off to one direction or the other. Not sure if that programming step is responsible or whether he messed something up in the install.

  • @zhaogl

    CAUTION: when reassembling, the torque values for a few nuts are not the same for my 2014 Fusion SE. I used the 85 ft-lb torque values in the video on cross bar nuts and damaged the screw on the bracket. Then I looked at the service manual it says 60 Nm (44 ft-lb). The screw is 10.9 M10 which is typically rated 49 ft-lb, which is close to the number from the manual. Another one is the two rack & pinion bolts. They are 10.9 M14-110 bolts, rated 215 Mn (158 ft-lb), and need to be torqued to 200 Nm (147 ft-lb) per the service manual... So be sure to check the service manual about the torque.
    Other than the torque value, this video is the best I can find on youtube and is very helpful. I followed the instruction and get the job done.

    Sofb, this sounds EXACTLY like the noise mine is making. Is makes the same multiple knocking sounds when turning (only to the left, not the right) at a standstill. Checked all of the suspension parts and everything looked tight. Showed to multiple mechanic friends and no one could tell me what it was. I am now 100% convinced this is it.

    I did this in my driveway. I’ll give my 2 cents. This wasn’t a bad job . Make sure you have a really good impact especially if you live in an area where they use salt on the roads. I would also have sway bar link arms on hand because mine had to be cut off and they were worn out anyways. I purchased a used rack and didn’t have to use a scanner. Automatically cleared code and works. The motor on my rack was split in half

      @@Joeski-nk7os How did you resolve your steering being stiff? I would recommend clearing stored codes but the battery disconnect step would have done that for you but just in case. Clearing codes should reset any codes that would make the PSCM to go to manual mode (no steering assist).

      That’s so true Blackman,I was a teenager in 1988, I had saved enough for a Toyota pickup( it was 3 yrs old) all my buddies gave me a hard time” That ain’t no ford” and other b.s. Well that truck lasted, and mite still be going for all I know, I smashed 135,000 really hard miles on that thing,missed shifts, I used bar and chain oil as oil! 2.50$ a gallon! Rolled it over, sunk it through the ice,and was drunk for most of it... I replaced front pads, that’s it!! No ball joints no alternator, no water pump, nothing else, except lots of side window glass( a lot of crazy girlfriends will do that) my buddies American rides? Hah,broke down, the usual ford/ Chevy BS, mentality, that it’s somehow OK that it costs a lot to go AMERICAN! Well not for me! They don’t make Toyota trucks like that anymore! And THATS too bad...

    Brian, my 2014 fusion is making the EXACT same noise, but only when I turn to the left. Does that make a difference? Can I be sure that it's the rack and not something else? What is causing the noise (what is actually failing/happening)? Thanks for your help!!!

    • @malimbestfilez
      @malimbestfilez 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. Did you end up finding what the problem is? Mine is very similar but only when turning right

    • @jspianoman07
      @jspianoman07 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@malimbestfilez So I ended up find that both of my front strut bearings were worn out. When turning the wheel very slowly you could feel a slight "bump" or vibration at one point in the turn which is indicative of the bearing issue. Replacing those has helped and the noise has now gone. That said, I still feel like there is something "lumpy" at the furthest extend of the turn. Like once you turn that far you have to force it over a hump to go to max turn. Idk. I have decided to leave it as is for now. I guess it's solved "enough" for me. The guy in the video never responded to me so no help there.

      Hello!
      I’ve counted the number of theeth and is 182.
      As it was impossible to buy just a new belt, I had to spend more money buying another steeering rack with all the same codes that were on the original one (to avoid communication issues).
      The problem now is that I cannot connect (communicate) it to the car. It remains 2 failure messages on the display as I had before and neither lane or park assist work properly in my Ford Fusion AWD 2013.
      What should I do?
      Thanks very much and God bless you!!

      Trina Cruz there is a recall of the power steering assist fault. 15S18 is the recall number. Should cover 2010-2012’s maybe others also. Definitely check and see if there’s a recall on your car for the power steering assist failure which is the whole steering rack. It’s like $1800-$2000 from the dealer. I just dropped my 2012 off, everything’s covered but they tried to act stupid at first. Give them that recall number! Good luck 👍🏼

    Mine dash says that the steering assist and the advance track are both disabled, but only after going thru a car wash with an underbody spray. Shut off the car engine for a few minutes and the warnings are gone and the power steering returns. Could this mean that only an electrical connector is loose or corroded, because the warning goes away?

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave A It could be a loose connection. It’s worth having the codes pulled and going under there and having a look to see if somethings loose.

    • @unitedwestand5602
      @unitedwestand5602 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s definitely the whole steering rack needs to be changed! There is a RECALL on this for a lot of Ford vehicles, check your vin number on their website to see if your car has the recall. They will replace it for free. I just dropped mine off they called a few hours later and said it’ll all be covered free of charge. 2012 Ford Fusion 2.5L 91k miles. The recall covers 10 years or 150k miles whichever occurs first. Good luck and Merry Christmas

      @@HowtoAutomotive Thanks for both replies. Upon closer inspection I lifted the hood and reached over the engine and pulled aside the C1463B cable from under the transmission housing and found the hidden problem. (This is one of three separate wire cables that connect to the power steering module that is mounted on the rack.) The cable had become detached from the harness clip on the steering rack and the harness rubbed against the transfer case until it wore thru to both copper wires. The wear was about 3/4" long. So I spliced, soldered, and put heatshrink over the wires along with new cable flex tubing. Next, I secured the cable with plastic cable ties so that the harness doesn't move and rub against anything again. A long test drive yielded no more warning lights. I think the problem is fixed. As suggested I did check the VIN for Ford recalls and this particular was not on the list.

      Sounds like the rack was off centered when you put the steering shaft on. I would try taking the steering shaft back off turning the rack all the way One Direction and rotating it back all the way opposite direction counting the amount of rotations divided by half and then put the shaft back on.
