The opening is for 1.6 Diesel engines. They got a Hall effect sensor which measures how fast and far you turn the steering wheel cause they have an electric steering pump.
It's cheaper for them aftermarket companys to produce one rack for all versions.

There was a reason the Focus was the most popular car in the UK for many years running. We forget now but when these first appeared in the late 90's in my opinion they were revolutionary in that class of large hatchbacks. Just think of how comfortable and refined they were compared to some of what else was on the road back then? I remember when Jeremy Clarkson reviewed the Focus on Top Gear. I know so many people who have got pretty good lifespans out of these with relatively little going wrong with them.

Very nice, thank you!!!! this video came just in time, I was going to use Mercon V (red fluid) as I am used to do on the Mondeo mk3, but after watching this I realized that the fluid required is actually green! Thank you Alan, I got help again from your channel!!! I am only replacing the fluid by the way..

Great video. The lighting made it very clear to see what you were doing.
I might have to do this job on my mark 1 so very happy to see this.
I will be doing it on my back on the floor though.

I don't think it was a good idea to leave that sensor hole open to the elements, I would have found a way to cover that even it meant making a small plate and sealing it on there, other wise a great job.

Yeah. Maybe. I suppose being a 57 plate this vehicle is probably only 1 or 2 MOT's from the scrap anyway.

Missus and I run Focuses mk2 and are both very happy with them, good thing is that there's plenty of them in local scrap yard if I ever need any spare parts, which I have over the years.

Hi Alan, hope you don't mind me saying but on the power steering pipes I changed the 2 small seals on them as mine leaked from there when I changed the rack on my Fiesta mk6 1.4 tdci. Love the videos pal and lovely to see your lad with you at work, oh try and keep him out of the office with them lovely girls in there. 🤣🤣😍😍

On my daughter's old 93 Escort i had to drop the front cross member also. With the left hand high up bolt, the nut had a rusted captivation clip thing which of course spun, inaccessible for any gripping tool, i had to heat it by welding the nut, when it was yellow, i was able to chisel it off.

Good job done there Alan! You'll have to let your "Monica" test drive the car once the O/S ball joint has been replaced. She'll tell you if it's been well worth it. 🏁🚙👍

Great video, I've owned a mk2 10 plater since 2011 which has now done 114000k besides the usual stuff that needs replacing like timing belt and both auxiliary belts its been very reliable indeed..its worth bearing in mind on the 1.6 petrol version the plastic coolent expansion tank will become brital with age with leaks developing and coolent running down the inner wing which then gives the appearance of a leaking water pump. Its worth checking the underside of the expansion tank especially if its the original.

I like the new projects, makes a change from the normal videos, don't know whether you put something to cover that hole in the new rack or if there is nothing in there to worry about? maybe some gaffa tape to stop the dirt and water getting in.

    Wrong rack fitted.
The ones which don’t have a sensor, the casting isn’t machined open like that, otherwise dirt and water can get into the pinion.

Why didn't you flush out the old fluid. If it had been run dry metal swarf could be in the system? Also maybe fit a speed sensor to the rack as its going to allow water and debris in through that hole.

What is it with Focus Mk2 PAS issues, the hoses leak, the pressure switch seals shit themselves, reservoirs split underneath...

  • @steamhammer2k

I had a new 57 plate focus. I could not keep up with the problems, almost everything leaked in the first 3 years, both rear shocks leaked b4 17k miles Not covered under warranty, front brake calliper's both leaked fluid under 20kmiles, not covered under warranty. The turbo leaked oil under 25k miles Ford would not repair under warranty said it was only misting. With that i never had a Ford again, you just don't need the conflict with the dealer and Ford MC when there is clearly an inherent fault.

I'm needing a replacement power steering rack for a 2005 fiesta, Can't seem to find one that comes with the pipes at any scrap yard so thinking i'm going to have to buy new online 😴 Does anyone know if you buy a steering rack does it come with the 2 pipes or do i have to buy the pipes seperately? I am clueless 😂 My mechanic basically says to me go and get a power steering rack and make sure the 2 power steering pipes are there aswell.. 🤔
