      I am mainly distro hopping my favorite so far is I am not gonna lie Linux Mint Cinnamon. It reminds me of older Windows by a lot. They got an app store to make it easy for software download for beginners. You feel at home similar to Windows and it basically is another just works distro.I am avoiding Manjaro and Deepin I heard rumors of them spying on their users. I don't know how much Deepin has improved but they CLAIM it's a Linux version of Windows 11 and works just like Windows it might as well be its own Operating System entirely I think it's Ubuntu or Arch based but I don't know.

      @@Mattscreative are you're AMD user Friends Windows Users or AMD users of AMD GPUs older than the 400 series? Because that's why Microsoft works directly with Intel and Nvidia meanwhile AMD has to make due with the After Market Code of Windows. On Linux both have to deal with that because there is no Direct Team for anyone to work with. AMD on Linux also has an Entire Community making Drivers while Nvidia is still Closely guarding most of their Code So that's why on Linux Nvidia is not all the way there just yet. Old AMD GPUs also just suck regardless of if it's on Windows or Linux.

    On the subject of KDE settings, I've always just used the search box to find the setting I want. I don't even read the sidebar. But I do the same in gnome too. Search tends to be faster for most things when it works properly. It's how I launch applications too, whether it's on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Drilling into menus with a mouse is glacial in comparison to just hitting a hotkey and typing what you want.

      @Mattscreative I will only use KDE Plasma for the foreseeable future. GNOME and its developers are causing too many problems with Linux right now. Looking pretty doesn't necessarily make a good desktop. I'd much rather have countless features that I don't use than need a feature that's not there, and the developers refuse or bicker over adding it.

    • @Mattscreative
      @Mattscreative  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I watched gnome development and saw no issues being caused they’ve been very agreeable with most things that are happening and we’re waiting on a lot of Wayland pull request and the only thing that I’ve seen is wayland developers, causing problems and holding back important things for Linux that gnome and kde both need

    • @k4everut
      @k4everut 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@Mattscreative Many of the Wayland developers holding things back are GNOME developers. Wayland is a consortium of developers from almost all of the different Linux desktops and windows managers. They all have to agree on request before it's added to Wayland. Usually (almost all of the time), it's a GNOME developer who doesn't want to implement something because GNOME doesn't want to support it in the future. It's usually a KDE developer that has to talk the GNOME developer off the ledge. Almost all of the progress on the Linux desktop in the last couple of years has been driven by the KDE Plasma project, in which some progress (like HDR support) has been driven by Plasma being the default for the Steam Deck.

    • @k4everut
      @k4everut 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Mattscreative I also want to caveat that while you are on year 1 or 2 of using Linux fulltime as your primary OS, I am on year 27. I've used both KDE (now KDE Plasma) and GNOME pretty much since their inception, and I have dealt with both of their development times a lot in the past to get bugs fixed and request new features. After dealing with someone or something for that long, the shine starts to wear off quickly and you start to see that person or thing for what it truly is. There is a reason that there are multiple GTK desktop ports (MATE, Cinnamon, etc). Many were constructed after a falling out with GNOME's development team. I think of GNOME as the Jennifer Lopez of Linux desktops. It's pretty and has a lot going for it. However, nobody wants to stay with it because it's a little too full of itself to sustain a lasting relationship. KDE Plasma is the one you keep, GNOME is the one you have a short-term fling with.

If you use NVIDIA, then you might have to install some propritary BS from them to use the hardware encoding. Let's hope that all the programms do switch to Vulkan Encoding soon, then they don't have to programm support for every graphicscard company anymore (Intel uses Quicksync, AMD uses VCN, NoVideo uses NVEnc, ...)

    I can understand why people hate on gnome to be honest... It sometimes feels like running Windows on Linux. As you said, The most simple things are missing (eg. Accent Colors), and the customization to me feels almost worse as on Windows.
    On the other Hand, That's the reason for why it is almost impossible to break Gnome. Which is actually pretty good if you just want a System that can do stuff, and you don't care about customizations that much.
    And i think you are the first person who actually speaks up when it comes to KDE. It's a frickin mess. Like you said, rather than fixing their countless issues (eg. on multiple monitors windows will mostly open somewhere completely random), and it is just a pain to use. And the worst part is that every single time you say smt about that, everyone is like "Yea, That's a Niche issue tho"... Like no, in 2024 3 Monitors are everything but not niche. I feel like the KDE Devs are all using a Laptop from 20 years ago only.

    Someone's really gotta figure out this Photoshop alternative on Linux thing. I've swore off Photoshop more then a decade ago and decided to just use Gimp, instead. That hasn't worked out so well for me and lately I'm kinda getting tired of it. Gimp's just not getting much better even after all this time. Which is strange considering I also swore off 3d Max at the same time and decided to use only Blender, which was a wonderful decision in comparison as Blender in now industry leading software, while Gimp still rides the short bus.
    Disagree with your take on AMD GPUs being useless. I use one. Everything important eventually gets ported to ROCM. Stable Diffusion, Chat GPT, Cycles all work on ROCM. I only lose out on weird experimental software and even that will probably change soon with CUDA to ROCM translation layers that are now open source.

    You said your Heroic Games Launcher couldn't find your drive, did you correct mount your drive to a correct directory? If you had, you have to install a flatpak program called Flatseal which manages lots of permissions to flatpaks which are sandboxed by default, on the "Filesystem" section you will find this "Other Files", you have to add the correct permissions there so it can find your directories, i mostly activate only "/home", i do add another "other files" entry to my "/mnt" directory, you can be more specific and add only the drive you mounted example "/mnt/Files"

      I'd recommend trying Linux out with what's called a live image. That way you don't have to install anything. Google Linux live image for more info what that's all about. I feel it's the best Linux introduction today. And do go crazy. Like run lots of different images. What you need is exposure and experience. While you're test driving Linux pay particular attention to software package management. Every Linux distro gets the software they have from the same places. What's different is how they package it. So on every distro definitely try installing new software. How you do that varies between distributions. Find the command line interface for it and mess with that. Don't just use GUI software centers. Being as you say you don't know which to choose I'll give you a list of a few you should try. Try Fedora, Mint and Arch. Those three will give you a good idea what the various flavors of Linux are like. That's all the major package management systems. RPM, DPKG and Pacman. RPM and DPKG are alike. They just use different commands to do the same things. Pacman is different.

      I really like the approach that KDE tends to take with some stuff. For example, hotkeys in OBS can work without a problem because despite the global shortcuts Portal design/implementation coming along veeeery shortly, they made a way to allow XWayland apps to still be able to read keys if you want to allow it.
      Then there was also XWaylandVideoBridge to allow XWayland apps to be able to cast your screen even if they don't implement the Screen Sharing Portal, which was very handy for Discord.
      VRR is also something that was important to me that KDE has had built into the Wayland session for a while now (I am aware that GNOME finally has this available as an experimental option behind gsettings/dconf).
      Things like that is what makes me really appreciate the KDE team :)

    I really enjoy using Linux much more than Windows, however, there's always nightmarish scenarios when updating kernels and video drivers. I don't get why they force out updates, that don't work for some people. Then nobody says anything, and there's all sorts of people having a bad experience. If I hadn't been forced into this kernel update that won't boot, I would be none the wiser but it just bothers me knowing that there's a new kernel out that might fix an issue or two, and I can't use it without lots of ball busting. The issue I have right now that's causing me to want to update my kernel, is the system won't reboot or shut down, without a command prompt. It gets stuck every time. It's a minor annoyance, but having the system not boot with the new kernel is an even bigger problem

    I have to say that I find your language pretty harsh. Yes, there are a lot of problems with many applications for Linux, but keep in mind that most applications are written by developers in their spare time and provided for free. Some things that are not important to you may be important to others. Also, things in development are not always as simple as they may seem
    Personally, I still wouldn't recommend Linux to many people, because if something breaks, many people can't recover from it. Windows is still easier to use than Linux in many ways (at least if you do more than write documents and surf the internet)
    However it is always interesting to see how people experience their first steps in linux

      This is who i am i am honest to the core and that won't change because someone gets upset at me because how people feel is not my concern. linux has major issues and i will speak out about them and not baby the issue like most FOSS apps have major issues that are never resolved. it won't change not talking about it.

      @@Mattscreative Yes, we should talk about the problems.
      But you're speaking in a very blameful way here, which doesn't help anyone except that the developers in question might feel offended. Even if you don't care how other people feel, you can still be considerate.

    No hate to the KDE Team.. but damn, I don't think I will ever get comfy with Kdenlive. And I can 100% relate: KDE Plasma is filled with too many options, I'm glad that it's so customizable, but give a Linux noob KDE Plasma and he will learn the DE first instead of Linux.
    This sounds harsh... and in general I really like KDEs Philosophy and that they are really open, but they need to improve.
