Crime in Maine is largely between/among people who know each other, drugs are often involved. A sheriff told a friend of mine "the crime is typically druggies stealing from Grandma or Auntie, cos they know where they keep their money." Avoid socializing with such folk, leave them to themselves, and you're fine. We've lived here 20 years and never felt at risk. We do lock our doors, cos we've lived in the Boston area, and ... habits....

Often times too the crime is from people away during the summer months when visiting Maine. But, Maine has had issues with drug abuse like most places.

You forgot to mention that about 90% of Maine homes are armed, especially north of Portland, also Maine is a constitutional carry state, so a lot of people are carrying mostly concealed. That, along with our sense of community and looking out for each other adds to the safety. If people are very anti-2A, Maine might not be the right place for them. Honestly, I think one of the biggest issues people "from" Maine dislike about people moving here from "away" is when said people move here and try to force an outside agenda or way of life on Maine. Don't be that person if you come here, when in Rome do as the Romans do. You left where you were for a reason to be apart of what we are offering, just give yourself to Maine and go with the flow.

Maine is safe due to the lack of diversity. Sad but true

@brooster7345 "Maine is safe because of the lack of diversity" Almost no diversity in Russia/Ukraine, which are nearly all white.....hows THAT going right now??? *CRICKETS CHIRPING*

I don't think it has to do with "lack of diversity" but more to do with the Maine mindset and hearts.. People from Maine are very proud and caring for their relationships and community. Also, if you weren't born here you will forever be not a Mainer to true Mainers.
