I've been donating blood every eight weeks since I was first allowed, and I'm going on 7 years now. Like James, I have magic blood. I'm O negative, RSV negative. I'm a universal donor and a supposedly rare subset of which that does not RSV antibodies in my blood. That means out of the nearly million people in my city, I'm told I'm one of very few who can donate blood to any baby born prematurely. Like James, I was donating blood anyway. Blood transfusions saved my brother's life before I was even born, and so when I came of age I decided that even if I did nothing else of benefit to others with my life, I could at least give up a little time and a little blood one day every eight weeks. But one day a nurse told me about how special my blood was, and now there's not a damn thing anybody could ever do to make me stop donating my blood. You couldn't pay me to keep my blood to myself. Bless you, James, and bless anyone who donates blood. My next day is actually next Friday :)

Thank you so much Phil! I learnt about James a few years ago, and he is the reason I wanted to donate blood. I'm ashamed to admit I forgot about his efforts in the few years, but it's great to see his story getting shared all across the world by you.
Usually these kinds of stories stay within the confines of our own countries, not only Australia but others too, and rarely make global news, so it's good to see these types of stories getting out there, and becoming and inspiration worldwide.
Everyone should learn from James and donate blood at least once a month. Make it an effort to go to the hospital and donate. God knows it would make a huge difference. And you could very well be the next James Harrison, or perhaps better, without even knowing it yet.

Yea I think we all wish that. The problem is that negative articles sell more papers, get articles watched more, and get more people to watch broadcasts. Therefore from a business standpoint its much more logical to cover all the bad things and ignore the good. The way I see it is that people love to hate more than they love to love.

ShannonCR if they don’t give you anything, it’ll probably be the most painful experience of your life (going off my medical family members)

Sepoohroth People like you & James are amazing. My mum received a bone marrow/stem cell transplant early this year from a matched donor from Germany & it worked. He wrote a card to his "genetic twin" & it brought us all to tears. He gave my mum a second chance after everything else had failed & for that, I'm incredibly grateful & full of admiration for people like him, you & all the donors around the world.

I thought of the phrase "We need more people like this in the world!", come to think it, maybe there are tons of generous, live saving people all around the world, but just don't get any type of recognition.
In an age where negative news travels fast, let's always remember to try to share the accomplishments of others who decide to do good in this world for someone else, out of the kindness of their hearts. Maybe it'll inspire more people to do the same.

Yeah, I definitely think there's lots of generous, good people in the world, it's just that no one cares to talk about it because we view it as the "norm" and not worthy of praise, and we care far more about knowing of bad things than good things.

Makes you realize how precious life is and how each day should be cherished. I used to donate blood when i turned 18 but over timed just stopped going. I'm only 22 now but everyday I get calls from American Redcross asking to donate because of my blood type, but I always say I'm "busy" or "maybe another time". Seeing this man and his story hit me how selfish that can be and how much lives could have been changed simply from me taking an hour out of my day. Thank you Phil for helping me realize this and will definitely make an appointment.

Yeah they blow up my phone sometimes but i never block them. I need to go in. Im a universal plasma donor for peat's sake! Everyone can take my plasma BUT not my blood. only my blood type can receive my blood BUT my blood type can receive from ALL blood types. (So whole blood is useless to donate for me xD) so its always a long process because of theses "valves" in my arm. Takes twice as long for me sadly.

Thank you for this Philly D! The world is so divided by our opinions, our issues, and our beliefs that it often feels we're at the edge of a cliff for humanity. Shining a light on James Harrison has elevated that sense of dread that I feel. For a brief moment I felt I could look at another person without a sense of dread of triggering them in the wrong way or being ignorant in some form or another. It's a pleasant feeling that there are people out there that, despite all the differences, can bring it home that it takes very little to being a hero to so many you haven't a clue too whom they may be and in turn being united through that very means of heroism.
I hope you continue this series, obviously you'll work yourself ragged if you do it daily. I hope you can at least do it weekly and maybe preferably every Friday like you did this one, that way we can meet the end of every week with a small, but colossal hero that can eventually turn all of this mind blowing dividing hate around.
AND thank you JAMES HARRISON for being a life saving hero to so many people and children, your part was small but it was an underestimated impact that left many grateful and looking toward the future.

Uh uh. No. Don't you dare feel ashamed for thinking that. It is not your fault that psychos and low-life cowards exist and "do things". It was not illogical for you to have thought something horrible was committed and is reported by a news channel no matter what channel it may be. You can't be blamed for assuming what has become too common, unfortunately.
So you take that "shame" and stuff it up the ass of some jackass that actually deserves it.

I’m from Australia and a blood nurse and the amount of selfless people that donate here astounds me every single day. It’s a thankless process because you never actually see the faces of the people you help, but here in Aus it’s such a huge community thing! It’s a coming of age thing staring in school when you turn 16, the donation bus comes around and you’re allowed an hour out of class (which none of us ever minded 😜) to go and save lives... Plus you get a sweet milkshake and cookie afterwards! For many, this then just continues through life as just one of the things you can give back with, that doesn’t really leave you without or any worse off.
Thank you to James Harrison for being a veteran donor! And thank you to every single other person who selflessly gives to others through blood. We’ve all got it, we all need it

I can't thumbs up any higher! This is a INCREDIBLE series to create in your company. Too much bad, not enough good. This is the good the world needs! You have such a reach in the news community that your position in media can start a new revolution of positive news. Thank you for using your talents and your team to add something positive to us all.

This is such an amazing story... We need more happiness in this crazy, and at times, disappointing world we all live in. It's nice to remember the heroes in our world, so often we are confronted with more enemies than we are heroes. Its a shame when the majority of the time the horrible people get more time in the spotlight than the people striving to make this world a better place for everyone. LOVE what you do on your show Phil, please keep it up. To be honest, as a viewer, I feel more comfortable coming to you for my daily news than I do my own local news station. Your inclusion to news stories from all over the country, and the world, has really opened my eyes to a lot of world issues. I am a more involved person because of you, I have more in-depth conversations because of your show (which for me always leads to me researching more about the topics you talk about). I hope you see this comment. Have a wonderful day everyone. And to all the James Harrison's of the world, and of course to the man himself: THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU ARE AND ALL THAT YOU DO. It is people like you that help me to keep my faith in humanity, something I struggle with sometimes.

"No I don't like needles, I never looked once." Haha, what an absolute hero! This reminds me a lot of the Henrietta Lacks story with her "immortal" cells. Though that one didn't have that much of a happy resolution :c

Yes, more stories like this please. I love hearing all the good stories that get overlooked simply because they are not eye catching. This proves that you can gain media traction in the public with a team that is focused on reporting good news.
