@Diskun I might be wrong, but Gradius 3 has less ports than 2. I believe 3 was only ported to the SNES while the arcade rom is emulated in the PS2 compilation (don't quote me on that, I didn't do a proper research). Meanwhile, Gradius 2 was ported to the NES, PCengine and X86000. Such a shame that the Master System version was cut down, probably in an effort to use a smaller cart. God I hate when Sega did that, trying to save money. Could have been such an amazing SMS port had they not done that.
I have always been very surprised about the fact that Sega didn't give the Master System version of Monster World III also a counterpart Game Gear version to be released in Japan and maybe North America, even though North America never got the Game Gear version of Monster World II and did a quite odd renaming to the Game Gear version of the first Wonder Boy. Maybe this had some relation to limit this in the minds of the Sega higher ups. But then again, it should have been done, in order to give the Japanese market a release of this "8 bit demake". Same as it was done with the Japanese Game Gear release of Monster World II, actually.
Yeah, it is very strange. I wonder if they thought the Game Gear just didn't have enough life in it? The Master System was still selling in parts of Europe and South America at that point.
@@RetroCore I don't think so. This was 1993 and at that point Sega was still pushing the Game Gear because it had some decent North American sales and the Japanese sales weren't too bad for their expectations. I believe it was in Europe, funnily enough, were the system was faring worse (the same exact situation was happening then with the Mega CD). It was on the contrary, Sega was starting to fade out the Master System and while in 1993 there was still a lot of joint Master System and Game Gear releases, in 1994 you could see a trend starting of games being released on the Game Gear but not on the Master System, the most prominent situation in that regard was probably Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble (which was intended for the Master System at first, but then was cancelled), and then TecToy had to call the shots with Sega from 1995 onwards to get all those Game Gear titles converted and released on the Master System themselves. So something very strange had to happen with this opposite situation, a game like this being released for the Master System which limited your markets to essentially Europe, Australia and Brazil, and strangely not releasing it also on the Game Gear which allowed for Japan and North America releases as well. Probably Sega thought that the Wonder Boy fandom was much more present on the Master System because of sales of games like Monster World II (The Dragon's Trap), even that would involve limiting regions, and not so much on the Game Gear despite the fact that they would skip Japan which got the previous two Wonder Boy titles on the Game Gear (same as Europe, but unlike North America which skipped The Dragon's Trap and renamed the first Wonder Boy to something like "Revenge of Drancon"). I can't get other type of reasoning behind this. The game can still be played on the Game Gear obviously, but the Master System resolution squashes the game and hinders aspects like especially reading texts. A proper Game Gear conversion like the one Monster World II got would have been ideal.
How are items and magic handled in the PC Engine version? The Genesis version uses the A button and a direction for that, while using the B and C buttons for attacking and jumping, but the PC Engine controller only has two action buttons. Do you have to hold Select and use a directional arrow?
The PCE has a three button pad - FYI. You select which of the third button is mapped to.. select or run. I play all my PCE games with this 3 button Ave pad. There's even turbo for extra button or "hold" mode as well. Honestly, I can't imagine owning PCE games and not owning this official 3 button pad hahah.
Nice comparison, I personally prefer the original (lots of nostalgia for it). I made a 100% long play a while back in case you're interested: th-cam.com/video/1vRSwykqMIQ/w-d-xo.html
Yeah PC Engine main character design is really laughable even for 90s standard it's bad, it's like they try copy Saint Seiya but failed hard, but i still have soft spot for full armor character than Heroic character like Master System and Genesis one it's probably coz I start sick with Dragon Quest default hero design, it's not bad but leave so many desire for hero who must defeat evil wear normal clothes not full armor it's kinda lame to me.

My comment was just because in an older video where he asked for suggestions I suggested Gradius 2 and he mentioned it would have only three ports. I was just trying to tease him to make a Gradius 2 video since now he doesn't have the "oh, it is just three ports" excuse 😅 but it is all in the name of good fun (and possibly a Gradius 2 video 😎)
Gradius 2 can be a possibility. It can be a video for when I don't have time to make a long one.
@Diskun It's probably because your brain knew something was wrong with my text and it filled the blank. Did you notice that I spelled the first word wrong? I meant THREE and I spelled THERE. See, that's the 3 of your Gradius.😜
@@RetroCore Exactly! Thank you for considering it.
@Diskun I want Mark to SUFFER with Gradius 3. It's a game I suggested solely because the arcade game is probably the hardest game of all time.
Wow Mega Drive is best by far in my opinion
It does seem to have the most detail in the graphics but it is missing so much.
PCE for the win!
@@BigBillKelly-x2z Pull your glass out of your ass haha. Darker? How about more colors and a softer look. The MD port is over contrasted. The parallax is minimal in this game. Crappy sprite redesigns? It's literally the just player sprite. Or do you mean like a character in one of the shops has a different hair colors because it's not limited to the same color restrictions as the MD port? Lmao downgraded music. The only thing downgraded here is your ability to look past your own bias.
Such a shame that the Master System version was cut down, probably in an effort to use a smaller cart. God I hate when Sega did that, trying to save money. Could have been such an amazing SMS port had they not done that.
Yeah, they did that a lot for western releases. Such a shame.
Same way but instead of button A, the Run button is used.
Great video as always! You should do Capcom vs SNK 2 next.
Maybe in the future.
I get so confused about the wonderboy naming of games. You done a video about the whole series yet?
No, not yet. Its something I would like to look in to doing.
There's an Amiga port I believe
It must be unofficial if there is. Kind of like the PC version I showed.
Do Unreal Tournament (1999) BotP, Mark✌️
Hmm...... Maybe some day.
@@RetroCore Quake III Arena was also released for 6th gen consoles. Just a suggestion.
Nice comparison, I personally prefer the original (lots of nostalgia for it).
I made a 100% long play a while back in case you're interested:

I stay with the sega genesis one. The pc engine is good but I don't like the Dyna character.
I can understand that. The styling is horrible and too childish.
What a coincidence. I was just showing my friend how hideous the western cover art is for this game 😅. At least the game is great in it's own right.
Oh yes. It's particularly bad airbrushed junk.
it sort of looks like a sonic prototype doesn't it ? even the story matches ...
I mean, palms and blue sky in the first level and other similarities but I think it's just coincidental.
I know about the game, but actually never play it.
