The fact it took over two decades since GT1's release in 1997 to find what all those menu images really come from, this video is a HUGE relief to my childhood guesses at the time. Wonderful discovery!
i´m sure, if they asked Polyphony/Sony, they had the answer a lot earlier. Most of these pictures are from the Motor-Companys itself. I think they asked the press agency for it and bacame the same pictures like magazines in this time.
I really really wish Polyphony would go back to this style of car dealership, simple colourful UI, real photo with artistic flair, individual music themes that reflect the nature of the brand

look up some early 90's Japanese tv adverts for cars, they're overwhelmingly European themed. It might just be number plates and actors, but sometimes there'll be a whole gaggle of cars never sold outside Japan being driven through an Alpine meadow or the streets of Barcelona- just for a few seconds of screentime.
Not to mention the fact that it was clearly shot somewhere in North America; note the shape of the front plate on the Audi and the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle to the extreme right of frame.
next one is with german license plate. N = Nürnberg (engl. Nuremburg) followed by these tiny circles. The upper one is for "HU" or "TÜV". It means that your car has got checked for technical issues every 2 year. And lower one was for "AU" and its meaning is, your car-exhaust was checked and is ok. "was" means, we don´t have it anymore, beacause it is now included with the HU/TÜV.

The Legacy among the legendary German cars was a nice touch. The Audi is a C4 A6 (I have one of these in real life), and while the Subie has French plates, the Audi has American plates. Following behind is a W124 E class Mercedes, and lastly, an E34 BMW 5-series.

How about somebody uncover the mystery of what the cover car is on Gran Turismo on the CD cover? I've seen many answers but nothing definitive or ever from polyphony digital saying what the car actually is. Many think it could possibly be a 3000 GT a 97 Camaro Z28, 300ZX Twin Turbo convertible and a few others with the similar shape of the 90's sports cars. Hope I find out one day before I die lol🤣
@@mattteee2973 Ntsc has a singular car covered with a silky silver shimmery car cover... the wind was blowing and they took the picture at the perfect moment to silhouette all the defining curves and features of whatever car is under this cover. And to this day no one has ever revealed what car it actually is.. not to my knowledge at least🤔 Yes you are correct and just a simple GT logo is for the PAL region only I believe.

Oh wow, honestly feel the Aston image was a bit lazy on the dev's parts. You can still see the text from the original in the lower corner through all the "funky 90's effects". I know this is '97 we're talking about, but the technology to perform rudimentary edits like this had existed since the late 80's and they probably could have gotten access to it.
The Impreza is not the flagship model though, it has always been a cost reduced shortened Legacy. Many people don't know that the first two STi were a Legacy trim.

Want to have your mind blown? Go listen to the Star Control 2 soundtrack. The Gran Turismo version you're displaying here used a lot of it for inspiration, and flat out copied some of it.
@55 Here's the whole soundtrack. Might as well listen to all of it as most of the tracks are between 1 1/2 -2 1/2 minutes, and all the music is great if a bit repetitive (it IS supposed to be background music). When the SC2 remaster was done some years back a call went out to the community for music for the game, and IIRC, they took the original midi tracks and made them with real instruments and sent them to the remaster devs. IIRC, the original music was sourced in a similar fashion but it was all original music, each track from a different artist. I could be wrong about GT taking the actual music, but so much of GTs music sounds like at least a few of the SC2 tracks. I also recommend giving Star Control 2 a go if you're into retro gaming. It's one of the best scifi adventure rpgs ever made and heavily inspired Mass Effect. Be warned though; you WILL need an external notebook. There is a lot of information you need to remember, and you need something to keep track of where various resources are located, and there is no in-game journal. "Funky '90s effects" I would guess it's just Polyphony reducing the colour depth of the texture so the dealership screen would load quicker. Maybe combined with the capture method they used to create the texture having poor quality.
Yep, all of the GT mode menus in GT1 are limited to 16 colours per screen, including all of the common buttons, credits icon, and so on. That's also why a lot of the car thumbnails on the new car lists are in similar colours - even at 2 colours each, with up to 8 cars per screen there wouldn't be enough left for the buttons etc. For GT2 they upgraded to a much more complex system involving a 256-colour background image, and a tiled foreground with 16-colour palettes shared between tiles. For example, a main dealership page is largely a background image, with the interactable elements like buttons being on the foreground layer. Only the foreground layer is localised, which is why the text describing the brand whose dealership it is is always in English, baked into the background image.
The photo that intrigues me the most here is undoubtedly the NSX at 2:09, and not just for its faintly ominous vibe. The car seems to have a UK number plate, L421 WMR, which denotes a 1994 registration year. However, when I looked up the number plate on the DVLA, it did recognise it as belonging to a Honda, but strangely, it marked it as White in colour, not Red. I think the racetrack shown in the photo is the Nurburgring, so I'm particularly curious as to the origins of the image itself, now that the source used by Polyphony has been found.
I'd put money on it having being owned by Honda UK. Its not unusual for lone press cars or late development cars to linger on well past the end of commercial sales. I used to see Honda using a battered '01+ NSX for driver training regularly, but I think the poor buggers replaced it with a Civic type R.

You'd be shocked if you heard the soundtrack from Japanese version of GT1, especially if you first heard the menu music from GT2. :) I bought a Japanese version recently for my collection and I was really surprised.
Fun fact on the NSX image... This was their loaner car they loaned out to reviewers back in 1995-1997. It was used all around europe and has been driven by the likes of Jeremy Clarkson, Tim Harvey, Richard Burns (RIP), Jason Plato, Harvey Postlethwaite (RIP), Manfred Wollgarten, Dirk Schoysman and Barrie Williams to name a few. The photo you see was taken by a photographer working for German publication sport auto in August 1997 at the Nurburgring where the car did a lap of the Nordschleife in 8:37. I had this photo as my screensaver on my PC for many years, and the backstory made it even more special to look at each day :)
Just gotta say that showcasing each of the origins of dealer images with their respective dealer music is quite the powerful combo. Awesome finds from the GT Planet crew!

I would guess it's just Polyphony reducing the colour depth of the texture so the dealership screen would load quicker. Maybe combined with the capture method they used to create the texture having poor quality.
Yep, all of the GT mode menus in GT1 are limited to 16 colours per screen, including all of the common buttons, credits icon, and so on. That's also why a lot of the car thumbnails on the new car lists are in similar colours - even at 2 colours each, with up to 8 cars per screen there wouldn't be enough left for the buttons etc.
For GT2 they upgraded to a much more complex system involving a 256-colour background image, and a tiled foreground with 16-colour palettes shared between tiles. For example, a main dealership page is largely a background image, with the interactable elements like buttons being on the foreground layer. Only the foreground layer is localised, which is why the text describing the brand whose dealership it is is always in English, baked into the background image.

The photo that intrigues me the most here is undoubtedly the NSX at 2:09, and not just for its faintly ominous vibe. The car seems to have a UK number plate, L421 WMR, which denotes a 1994 registration year. However, when I looked up the number plate on the DVLA, it did recognise it as belonging to a Honda, but strangely, it marked it as White in colour, not Red. I think the racetrack shown in the photo is the Nurburgring, so I'm particularly curious as to the origins of the image itself, now that the source used by Polyphony has been found.
I'd put money on it having being owned by Honda UK. Its not unusual for lone press cars or late development cars to linger on well past the end of commercial sales. I used to see Honda using a battered '01+ NSX for driver training regularly, but I think the poor buggers replaced it with a Civic type R.
That particular NSX is indeed Imola Orange and is a Type S which had been converted by Honda Japan for UK compliance. Best Motoring have done a couple of episodes featuring the car.
I always suspected most of the imagry for the dealers was from magazines, brochures, promo stuff and/or ad articles.

You'd be shocked if you heard the soundtrack from Japanese version of GT1, especially if you first heard the menu music from GT2. :) I bought a Japanese version recently for my collection and I was really surprised.

Fun fact on the NSX image... This was their loaner car they loaned out to reviewers back in 1995-1997. It was used all around europe and has been driven by the likes of Jeremy Clarkson, Tim Harvey, Richard Burns (RIP), Jason Plato, Harvey Postlethwaite (RIP), Manfred Wollgarten, Dirk Schoysman and Barrie Williams to name a few. The photo you see was taken by a photographer working for German publication sport auto in August 1997 at the Nurburgring where the car did a lap of the Nordschleife in 8:37. I had this photo as my screensaver on my PC for many years, and the backstory made it even more special to look at each day :)
