Part of the reason fans loved them so much is that they are real. Unlike the rest of industry that presented an image (remember the “gods and goddesses of K-pop”), BTS showed “flaws” and all. Fun example, instead of hiding it they would name their pimples with fans and say they have a new friend visiting for a few days 😁

One thing the video doesn’t make clear is that Big Hit had far fewer rules and restrictions than the Big companies. Actually, despite their talent, RM an Hobi don't fit with the Korean beauty standars, other labels would never have signed with them like Bang PD.
But we also have to consider that many of the trainnies and members of new groups are minors, the agencies have a commitment with their families to take care of them and the responsibility that these kids not go out without control, do not fall into drugs, go to school and complete their studies.

Oh! Yes that could have been explained better. WHAT?! They are both so handsome!!!!! That’s weird to think of!
Ooohhh. Very very good point. That makes so much sense. These rules are also to protect minors. Which is very important. Thank you for explaining that as it really makes everything make more sense.

Little (his)story of Bangtan and i11evn. (the guy who talk about rules) : Bangtan was originally abbreviated as B.P.B which came from their English name, “Bullet Proof Boys” (No boy scouts at this point). There were about 30 trainees for Bangtan but the official line up was: Namjoon, Iron, Shin Donghyuck (Supreme Boi), Choi Ikje (i11evn). Yoongi, Hoseok, and someone named Park Yeong-man. Ikje aka i11evn was the one who win the rapp battle against Yoongi at the first Hit It audition. He, Iron and RM, who was known under the name of Runch Randa, were part of a hip hop underground crew named Daenamhyup,. You can see Rm talk with them in this episode. . Something happened in 2011, the project was changed, turning the hip hop crew in hip hop idol group. The name has changed from BPB to BTS , The line up was redone. Iron , i11evn and others left the project and Big Hit. Supreme Boi left the group but stay in the compagnie as producer. It seems that i11evn and others underground friends were not very kind or friendly toward him, since he choose the path of becoming Idol.
For the rules in the Kpop industry, Big Hit have some too, of course. Specially for the trainees, because they were all underage exept Jin (who never follow the rules Lol ) but less than in the other compagnies. Some hints in this série are really subtle, so maybe you failed to noticed them : when it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics/when it says idols have phone bans , you see the BTS members on their phones/when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. For the beauty aspect : Bang PD choose the boys for their talents and raw potential, not for their face . Exept Jin, none of them fit the very strict "k pop male beauty standards" , that's why anti attack them so badly for being "ugly (!) or "not a idol face", specially RM and J hope, but also Jimin who suffer from bodyshaming because he was cheeky and not thin enough, poor angel. As they grew, some behavior rules vanished in the air 😂(they got tattoo and piercing, drink on Vlive, curse on stage sometimes, made fun of their CEO ...but they still are gentle, respectful, polite and well manered ! ) Bang Si-Hyuk , when he created Big Hit, openly stated he didn't like the system that the Idol industry had created and he wanted to do better. No phone ban, no weight quota, no forced amount of practice (but we all know that BTS dédication for their craft and fan is crazy), and of course, creative freedom others group don't have. Not only to write their lyrics within BTS, but also to have their own mixtapes without BTS. Even now, just a few amount of Idol group write their own lyrics, and none of them talk about issues or topic as BTS have done (mental health, school pressure, disparity in societal classes etc)

LMAO another reason I love bts is they even now are so goffy. My cousin worked as a back up dancer for them and he said BTS just treat everyone like a normal guy and is very friendly and nice. He worked with a ton of other celebrities and he said most of them don't talk to you so he forever respect them and I told him its because bts came from an almost bankrupt company with suga working as a newspaper boy, Jhope as a backup dancer for a short time. Also I remembered when BTS debut, their company try to make Jin have an persona as a "cool untalkative guy" as his "persona" and what others will perceive him as and then one day he went just went 180 and become the Jin he is today constantly cracking jokes etc. Jin said he tried being the "cool manly guy" for 1 and a half years? 2 years? But he couldnt take it anymore and just decided to be him and all of bts give up being something they are not and just be themselves and their personality and what they do is very chaotic but that's also what I like about them. Even now, you can constantly see RM riding bikes in korea and them sometimes taking subway etc

just wanted to point out that the people giving their experiences are people who left the industry/ bad labels already. yet we have bts saying how they dont think idols should have such rules. meaning bighit didnt control them there because wouldnt they stop bts from saying such a thing if bts had the same rules. many see bts saying this and think oh so bts have it too instead of seeing the reason bts can say it is cause thats not their experiences and bighit doesnt enforce those. cause if they did they wouldnt want bts saying it publicly right?
if a idol speaks out and are still in the company usually its cause theyre leaving that label, their contract ended or the label theyre in isnt controlling unless they say specifically the label theyre in is like that.
example there have been cases where a idol would leave YG and go to a smaller label then speak out about YG. this means YG was controlling that idol but the new label theyre in isnt controlling them. since bts were able to speak out about some things they didnt like about the industry we can assume that bighit didnt treat them that way. and since bts did open up about diets that means it wasnt entirely forced because if it was then bighit would try to make sure bts dont say anything right? basically the rules bts did have werent strict and some were even brought on by the members themselves. and it wasnt bad at bighit vs the other labels the idols in this video were from which were mostly the big 3 labels. this was back in 2014 too so if bts were as controlled as people like to pretend they are they wouldnt have been able to speak at all on the topic. because they can speak shows theyre not under control.
normal rules for minors and celebrities in general like knowing where they are may seem restrictive but idols are in a very dangerous position as are any celebrities you never know what crazy people are following you waiting for your security to not be around you. so while i do understand the idols frustration many of them knew this going into it and they need to keep in mind of their safety i think another video you guys should react to is a video about sasaengs aka stalkers but kpop idol stalkers are a different type of evil. the bigger you are the more stalkers you get. which is why companies dont allow a lot of the idols to go off without them knowing where they are. even then this isnt a always thing bts are known to go out on their own maybe 1 or 2 people with them sometimes not even that so bighit does try to make sure bts are safe but they do still let them go off alone especially now that theyre late 20s early 30s. basically i dont like the generalization and how they paint every idol going through this because its case by case day by day its not a overall rule that everyone follows at all times. maybe the labels they were in do follow it without any leeway but bighit/hybe doesnt.

I’m at the part of the video where you guys are talking about growing up. I strongly strongly recommend Yoongi’s song 28 off his D2 mixtape. It’s such a good song about becoming an adult. Strongly strongly recommend.
I feel like these days I’m more skeptical about a lot of the ‘girl power!’ Song/artists because a lot feels like it’s just marketing or lip service, sigh.
If you ever get a chance, suga’s D2 as a whole album, it’s almost like a journal. FR the rapline in their mixtapes are really honest, esp Yoongi's. Like sometimes I’m like (☉。☉)! I can’t believe you went there honest.

Hobie crying at the message from his family gets me every time. The fainting…they are doing intense dancing more so than most American artists do. Fainting in athletes in America is pretty common during practice especially outdoor sports like football. I’m not sure if that music video was shot outdoors or not. Also, Jungkook dancing in front of Hobie’s hospital bed to cheer him up is so sweet & pure. He knows Hobie loves dance. I’ve always thought that was so precious.

I agree with the idea that K Pop tends to be formulaic, speaking on common themes which tend to sell well. However, it should be noted that after pounding the idea that individual expression for the most part was highly limited by the corporate governance of K Pop, the documentary teased with the beat of BTS Cypher 2. OG ARMYs know this track as an absolutely brutal lashing out by the BTS rap line against those underground belittlers who derided BTS rappers' ability to speak freely. Cypher 2 was about as free-thinking, uncommercial a track as could ever be imagined on a commercial K Pop album of a group barely over a half year old. Bang P.D. was bucking the K Pop trend with Big Hit while giving enough of traditional Idol music to pull the public in.

On the topic of idols not writing their own lyrics, I know that in recent years there's been quite a gradual rise of songs where idols actually contributed in the writing. Off the top of my head, I know groups like STRAY KIDS (a mainly self-produced group), Dreamcatcher (rock-genre girl group), and G-IDLE (their leader is the or one of the main producer/writer iirc) have credits in writing a lot of their respective songs. Even small K-pop companies have started letting their idols get more involved in the production of the music; mostly through their inputs on what should be changed or done differently.

"White privilege/preference for white skin" in the West means something different from "white privilege/preference for white skin" in the East. "Whiteness" in the West is based on racism, colonization, and white supremacy. "Whiteness" in the East is based on classism and aristocratic concepts from ancient times. South Korea/Korea (historical context: Goryeo/*Korea as a whole* before the North and South Korean division by the USA/Soviet Union), is a very old country, older than many countries in the West. In the East, lower-class Koreans (or Asians in general) worked in the fields/farms; thus, they were constantly under the sun and had tan (dark to very dark) skin. So, in the East, if you had tanner skin, you were observed to be from the lower class, while upper-class Koreans were indoors, scholars, and had fair skin.

It is sad bc no metter how honest they are people with one eye vision won't see it, or see it as fake anyway.

I am glad you also got to see how much Suga loves Army and how he shows it by making little presents with his own money. Yes - off the top of my head I recall that Lady Gaga & Justin Bieber have both had multiple fainting episodes while on tour, in addition to the multiple Western stars who have had voice issues, such as vocal nodules and/or polyps.
I'd add that one of the things that sets BTS apart is the simple fact that they often tell us when they have health issues. Of course, individual members sometimes keep things private (e.g. Yoongi's shoulder injury), but BTS is pretty unique in the extent to which they share even things that they know will make fans worry.

I’ve seen other videos in which JK talks about he missed home and he would cry. The boys are so good to JK, it warms my heart. Yoongi has such a warm heart. He’s always doing things for others who he cares about. The boys have been doing a vlog every Saturday and Suga’s was the last one. He went woodworking and made each member a gift. Oh, that Hobi part…I’ve seen it so many times now and it still makes me cry. His mother sacrificed so much so the he could do what he wanted, and he wrote a song called Mama from the Wings album. I love that song! Jin…he was always self conscious about his dancing. He would practice by himself after hours so he wouldn’t “embarrass” himself. These boys are so dedicated to their art and to each other. I’m so glad Big Hit was so different from other companies.

When Jimin spoke of how he felt when he became an adult and you both commented on the realization that not much changes right away; and how you noted realizing that your parents don't know everything, I just wanted to share this... my oldest child is 31 years old and he recently thanked me for being his Mom. He said, "After seeing and hearing about some my friends' childhood experiences, you and Dad did a damn good job!" I cannot tell you how relieved I felt because we have had our moments of conflict and I have wondered if "that" was the right thing to do. Even though you may sometimes feel like you have no idea what you're doing as a parent, trust your instincts and recognize the areas in which your parents did well (copy this) AND the areas they did poorly (change or better them). I wouldn't say their mix tapes were a work around from their company. Big hit and Band PD really believed in them as individual artists as well and highly supported and encouraged them to do this...releasing MVs for their solo tracks, etc. And I also wouldn't say that there wasn't space for them to express what they wanted to say officially through BTS, all 4 cyphers are on BTS albums...they did not hide their diss to haters, etc.

Hi, I am back. Good reaction, ty. So glad u started this series. Aneesa the creator of this docu series is an editor. It took her 4 yrs of research to create 20 plus chapters. Many army don't want this series to end. Aneesa has to do more research to tell the rest of BTS story. She sadly does not have much help. She was promoted and could not edit the last 3 chapters. She sadly, stopped this series and deleted it from YT. It was very upsetting. Glad, army saved what was on YT before she deleted. Jimin was the last member to join. He was with them 6-8 months. But all the rest of the members were together 2-3 yrs. Excited to hear your thought on ch.5. Appreciate u watching the deleted scene. So glad u liked this. I am learning so much. I love this! RM is in fact a genius! Hugs. Later's. -NY USA 2019 Army💟

I have wondered at that idea of wondering what happens when you become an adult. As Gen Xer, my experience was very different. As a latch key kid, and my parents style being kinda hands off, I always felt like a responsible little person. Although I def kept that teen side of me. My dad calls me and my friends "overaged teenagers" because he feels like we never grew up lol! All I know is I am a grown ass adult at 53 everywhere, except when I go to my mom's then I am 16 again lol! I feel like talent should always trump looks. Like you are going to find attractive the things that resonate with you. I'm glad that BAngPDnim was very focused on talent more than anything. And you guys are so cute! I didn't realize you guys had that "no one cries alone in my presence" rulel Like even your pupper is empathic lol! It hit you guys and here comes the pup lol! I love the conclusion that Namjoon reaches. He is just himself. How great would it be if everyone just lived as their authentic selves? That is absolutely my goal.

I was just thinking it's crazy how RMs words still apply now. How many people have we encountered who've said the worst about BTS because of their personal prejudices? The things they say when in fact these people know nothing about them. It's tiring.
One cute thing is that they call the member's parents mom and dad and their parents all gained 6 sons. I'm glad their families are close too.

About phone thing, I don't really know what is like with BTS, but I honestly don't think they have this situations when someone would check their phones, but it us about scandals, actually a lot of Idol scandals are bc of leek of private messages, don't ask how people get hold of it, it can be that person on another side simply leeked it or sold it, or illegal means like hacking, but bc there were a lot of scandals that started bc of messages show to public I think that is why this kind of think exist.
Idols are normal people they can say, or rather write things that then can by take out id context or have fight with someone and then that person angry tell some things that where said in trust or even flirting etc...

    • @septasoareousrex
      @septasoareousrex  ปีที่แล้ว +1

We can definitely see that side of things, but ooooof does it make us uncomfortable. Lol!!! Everyone says and does things at some point in their life that they wish they could change or that they regret looking back. But we are all human at the end of the day. Makes it hard to express your thoughts and feelings 😅

@@septasoareousrex ohh of course I 100% agree, I would never want anyonevwithout my permission to look into my phone or computer, my husband and me even don't know each another passwords, and it should't happen they should have privacy. But a lot of this situations are bc they do it to themself, like the example I will write. So I can see from what place menagment of company is coming from, that is why now a lot of companies scan tranies before they took them into company, they check for potentials scandals. I know you don't know much about kpop and SK, but scandals break carriers, of course in US also, but not like this, little thing can make company give up on you, for example there were scandal that guy from Idol group have few girlfriends, when he get bored he ghosted them an take another and then come back then he feel like it, etc, in the end this girls found out about it and told public with text us proof, in US singer like would have some backlash and that is that few months and people would forget, but in this situation Idol have to leave the group and end carrier bc fans and general public didn't want to see him. There was scandal with girl Idol that give someone some of her photos that were more reviling and it come out later. There was with guy that manipulated girl for gifts that put her in debet, and then he said that he never told her to give him all that, and it is hard to proof manipulation, guy had to leave. In last 6 months 3 girls from different groups lost contacts bc some bulling from elementary or middle school come out, people had old message that show they they were mean or something and it was end of singing and stage for them. And bulling is serious stuff and very bad and harmful, I still remember this older girl when I was in elementary school that said mean things to me, so I won't say it is fair or not to lose carrier bc it isn't about my opinion. but simple to show you that Idols are cut very fast from groups if they give any bad image to company and group. Like I said I only say it bc from their perspective they lose money and world is all about it.
Wow sorry it come out quiet long... ;)

So it is true that most kpop lyrics are shallow and doesn't carry that much weight because people write trashy bubblegum pop that they thing the public wants but for bts it's different becuase they write most their lyrics and it's based off their own stories and feelings and even bang pd said that he wants them to tell their own story which is why I resonate with bts music so much and not the rest of kpop becuase it's so relatable and carry weight.

This documentary is so good, but there are many social issues of Korean sociaty either cultural, historical that are hard to fully understand with a western mentality, they are so square they don't have much room for flexibility or improvisation, and everyone must follow to not stand out.
But big hit give BTS more freedom that other companys did to their idols, even though there are rules all must follow.

in some way it has changed the idol industry they have tried to recreate BTS but fail because it was a clear move to do so and it seemed fake. there is another group called stray kids who do some writing but they still have that clear kpop sound i don't like personally. the music is to complex a lot of different beats. but the lyrics is not that deep like RM. i can´t settle with less at this point hehe.
idols don't got more freedom i think they just UP the requirement to the idols so they have to also write sing and dance and not all can do that while producing a new album every year so the quality suffer. but recently the new girl groups from hybe has had a different more modern pop sound witch is an "easy" listen.
it´s very popular right now but than again it´s not deep lyric music. i understand when western people call kpop for machines or robots because that´s what they are basically. but with bts they have the freedom to write and produce. they even wrote songs a side from their bts albums witch was solo rap songs or unit songs witch was pure and true rap. so fans got both. they got kpop with deep lyrics and rap songs that tells the story of the members. but bts was still locked down they could not just make a collab or a solo album but they can now. and we just got j-hopes and it was amazing. total rock concert at lollapalooza hehe. bts will always be remember for changing the view of kpop. but for me i don't think the other groups deserve the recognition. they are talented for sure but not allowed to make their own sound and that is why i am fan of bts and not the others.
