Doing fine in my 2.0L 2023 Sprinter weighing 10k lbs at Mammoth Lakes (8kft elevation) right now. It’s happier at 55 than at 70 up a steep enough grade. But the 2020s were the same. I bought a 2022 3.0L in Feb 2023, but had to tow it from New Jersey to Seattle. I believe 2.0 can have the same horsepower as 3.0 with dual turbo, but I still choose 2022 for 2 reasons. When generate same power, 2.0 needs rotate much faster than 3.0, which means shorter life span. Dual turbo also means much higher temperature and higher failing rate. Second, msrp of 2023 is much higher than 2022. It is about 10% higher with the same configuration of 2023 2.0 to 2022 3.0. Moreover, the destination fee was raised from $1700 to $2300.
@@smartknife Wow, this is great information.Thank you for sharing it.And I feel the same way as you do two turbos will give you more problems and that is a lot of stress for the transmission and engine for sure
2.0 liter is plenty of power. The chassis can't tow over 5000k anyway. If you wanna tow, get a Ford High HO f350 or Ram 3500 diesel. Isuzu diesel has been 4 cylinders for s decades.
Our Silverado with the 2.7L 4 Cylinder Gas can tow more than 9,000 Pounds. The 3.0 Diesel Inline Six can also pull more than 9,000 pounds. Our 2022 Colorado with the 2.8L Duramax Diesel was capable of towing 7,700 Pounds. And currently the Colorado (which is Motor Trend Truck of the Year) is only available with the 4 Cylinder 2.7 Gas from the Silverado and can also tow 7,700 Pounds. Fun fact: Semi Trucks are 6 cylinders and they tow 80,000 pounds. The Turbo is what makes the difference! This Mercedes should be more than capable of towing 5.000 pounds. Engineers know what they're doing.
Two turbo chargers mean that that diesel is the high output model, that has 332 lb/ftof torque. That's 7 more than the outgoing V6.However, evenr the slight bump in both horsepower and torque, I could not imagine howing 7,500 ills. The standard diesel engine with a single turbo can tow 5,000 lbs. The discontinued 3.0 V6 could tow 7,500 lbs. I kind of don't trust that this engine (the 2.0 diesel) will have a long life. Mercedes should have made any improvements to the tried and true 3.0 V6. And they could have mated the 9 speed to it. I think it was a wrong move to downsize for any reason. And the MPG are the same... so...I think this is going to bite Mercedes in the ass as these engines fail.
The old engine has more history in ratability i agree and i agree with you to keep the 3.0 and add the 9 speed transmission that would been a beast of a sprinter , but it looks like the pressure from EPA a government agency forcing manufactures to make small engine so the diesel engine and gasoline will fail in the near future and we all have to be force to go with electric, thanks for your great comment 👍
The moment you start comparing gas and diesel, I knew you had no clue what you were talking about. I actually agree that this engine is too weak for 11000 GVWR, but no one knows how reliable this powertrain will be over the long term. Only time will answer that question. Also, most people absolutely do not tow with these vans. They convert them to RVs or the use them for hauling cargo, but they're not towing. You are just trying to projecting your experience and opinions onto everyone.
I have the V6 diesel and they are so difficult to work on, so maintaining it is at a higher cost. Also have several common failures in the v6 that apprlear at around 100k miles and are expensive. Oil cooler seals, alternator, vacuum pump, swirl flaps. I see the 4cyl as way easier to work on. That's what I would choose
Whats your point ??? I have a LWB high roof MB sprinter with a 3L V6, I just love the thing ! Cheap on fuel, runs great, lots of room ! I know the 2 L diesel consumes even less, but this is what I find when I needed it. You were saying " 2.0 " so many times, it felt like the needle is jumping back on and on the old LP ! Buy american !!!! You will drive on 17L/100Kms instead of 12 L ! You want to tow 16000 IB ? buy a shevy 2500 pick up, ( I have one ) it will do it on 24L/100 KMS ! Seems like you have too much time !
I miss my 2015 Sprinter. Great Gold color. $46k. I built it ONLINE, went to dealership and had it built on their system. Got most of the options. Built in Germany. Had a HVAC CO. Fun truck. I dont think people buy Sprinters for towing in the first place, they buy them for hauling freight. Or for a RV build out. If you dont want the 2.0, then dont buy one. Buy a used with 3.0V6
He's wrong. I have a 2019 Sprinter with a 2.0 gas engine and 9 speed transmission with 470,000 miles so far. This is the most reliable drive train of any of the diesel Sprinters, Promasters and Chevy vans I've owned. I have never had any issues with the drive train, and I have over 500 hours of idling time in addition to the mileage. Unfortunately Mercedes stopped making the gas Sprinters.
I've replaced one fuel injector, one alternator, one radiator hose to the coolant reservoir, one PCV regulator valve and one catalytic converter. I think the PCV regulator valve may have damaged the catalytic converter by dumping excess heat and fuel into the exhaust. All Mercedes dealerships are expensive, so I change my own oil, about $80 for one hour, and my spark plugs, about $85 for one hour of work. I replaced the battery myself. I did my own brakes. I used TH-cam videos for guidance.
Not everyone needs or wants to tow. Space in the engine compartment is a negative??? Formula 1 cars have 1.6 liters and can produce over 800 horsepower. 1.6liters. The upgraded (there are 2 diesel models available) MB 2.0L I4 turbo diesel engine has better power specs than the old 3.0L V6 turbo diesel. The upgraded 2.0L I4 puts out 211HP and 338lbft of torque. The obsolete 3.0L V6 puts out 188HP and 325lbft of torque.
The creator has an obsession with engine capacity. Modern engines are far more efficient than older engines. My first car (30 years ago!) was a 3.3L inline 6 and it produced about 1/2 the power of my current 2.5L inline 4 which also uses 1/2 the fuel. Hell, F1 cars run tiny engines with huge power.
@@mercedessprinterdiy8556 I think modern engines with modern lubricant do last. My last 3 cars purchased from new all had no issues over the (admittedly small) time I owned them. I bought them, drove for 5 years and traded them in for a new vehicle. The main issue with modern high tech engines is that they can be very expensive to repair. But that applies equally to all engine sizes.
lol my UK 5-tonne ex Emergency Ambulance twin rear wheels is a 2.1 litre 4 cylinder engine. Are you telling me that I am imagining how well it tows a fully loaded caravan? Oh and it has 535,000km on the clock… In the 5 years I’ve owned it, it’s had nothing expect yearly services + 2 tyres. Zero issues. I’m not entirely sure you understand the torque (or longevity) available in a Mercedes 2.1 litre diesel engine…
What's wrong with 2.0L? Smaller the better as long as power is there. More room to work on. Is this a pro or con video? Sounds more like a positive to me.
is just that you pay 60 to 100$ for a small 2.0 4 cylinder engine that sucks on towing , did you ever had a v6 if you did you would know what im taking about
While its a downgrade and i agree with your concerns, the 2L 4-cylinder diesel is fine. The 2L you find in the sedans are completely different engines that the ones you find on the sprinter, and its also completely different compared to the previous 2.1L Sprinter. These are all new developed engines you should give a chance. In Europe, we are unfortunately hit much harder with the downsizing bs, we are used to 2.0L Sprinters by now...while yes the previous V6 was better, the new engines can tow just as much. Tried it in the Alps and the engine does it well. Though it would help a lot if the prices would go down significantly, Mercedes in general from sedan to Sprinter is getting way too expensive for what they offer nowadays. Here is why they no longer offer the V6. Mercedes introduced an all new engine family in 2017/2018 where they switched to inline engine only for their 6 cylinder. The new inline 6 cylinder engines, don't fit into the Sprinter as the engine is too long. The V6 was just kept around as long as they could, as it could only be modernized to a certain point since it's no longer developed and last gen. So everybody knew sooner or later the V6 was going to be ditched. I wish Mercedes developed an inline 5 cylinder as a middle ground as it still would fit in a Sprinter, i think the Sprinter would be perfect with such an engine.
How is the new 2.0 a downgrade when it has over 30 more hp like 13 more torque . real world probably 15% better mpg. Smoother faster better mpg how is that a downgrade
I tow with a 2014, 2.0 for 100k miles and no issues at all, the 9 speed tranny is smooth as silk and it knows when you have a trailer and adjusts for it. I hear the newest 2.0l has better power too. I will buy another one when the time comes. I was skeptical at first and torn between the two motors, i am glad i got the 2.0l. 25 mpg around town and 17mpg with a very heavy trailer 800 miles one way regularly, just saying.
From what I know about the engine is that the early ones had minor issues. All resolved best I understand. But the best part is they designed it to be able to go up in hp, for when the phase out of the v6 came. The heavy duty chassis with dual axle gets the higher hp motor possibly others two, it has been a few years since I looked at them. If I didn't get the deal on my 2014 right before covid, I would get the new HD chassis with the dual axle. As it is, I have the worst case, a passenger van not cargo, I added air bags and a heavy sway bar in the back and it tows like a dream. I have the high roof and the heavy sway bar helps a lot on the passenger van, they have a very soft suspension for comfort. The air bags are used to level everything especially if I have cargo in the back and the trailer. I have been through east coast mountains and it did well, down shifted good up the hills, I occasionally over rid to a lower gear if going too slow. But not heating issues ever, knock on wood. Will it tow or climb a hill like a strait 6 Cummins, no but then again, pick the right tool for the job. For me the great mileage when empty was important and reasonable towing capacity for my needs. Granted like anyone would, sometimes I wish I had more power, but then there are costs for that, it is give and take. I would love to hear from someone's experience with the HD newer model and if they like it. One thing I highly recommend on the 4 cylinder is not to go the full 15k interval for oil changes, the tiny turbos are sensitive to old oil as they run very hot. I go 10K miles pr less for oil changes. I know they changed intervals several times. To me oil is cheap insurance.
My thoughts exactly. I have the V6 4x4 Sprinter Van with a Thor Class B build on it. That thing weighs 8,500 lbs now.. Can't imagine putting a continuous weight like that on an engine that small. Stupid move.
Build outs in the industry add to your weight capacity so it's obvious you wouldn't in your situation! But your situation there is no comparison to a cargo van at diffrent weights .

@AlphaandOmega0237 ,What? I mean about having a space in the engine compartment. It means the engine is a baby engine. It's too small. Compared to my v six is a real man engine
What a BS video. The Twin turbo High output diesel will destroy the old V6 diesel. Not even close. The transmission and the steering are greatly improved.
While the new twin-turbo high-output diesel engines, like the one in the 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, offer advancements in horsepower and torque, there are some criticisms regarding the new 2.0-liter engine. Many reviews suggest that while the engine is feisty and comparable to the outgoing V-6 in terms of performance, it may not give the same level of confidence when the van is fully loaded or in demanding driving conditions. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the long-term reliability and durability of smaller engines in heavy-duty vehicles. It's important to consider these factors when comparing the new engine to the older, possibly more robust 6V diesel models. The improvements in transmission and steering are noted, but engine performance and reliability are crucial for the overall vehicle operation.
Don't underestimate the true power of a Mercedes diesel. And comparing a diesel engine to a gasoline one shows your ignorance of the true power of a diesel. 5,000 pounds towing is believable with that van. Not so much for an F-150 lol..

2.0 liter is plenty of power. The chassis can't tow over 5000k anyway. If you wanna tow, get a Ford High HO f350 or Ram 3500 diesel. Isuzu diesel has been 4 cylinders for s decades.
no i think i will keep my 3.0 Liter v6 sprinter for as long as i can it saves lots of fuel
Max towing is 7500 pounds
Isuzu are 5.2L I-4. It’s almost 3x the size
Engineers know what they're doing.
i hope they do and only time will tell on what future problems this small engine and very complicated transmissions thanks for watching
You know Class 8 trucks 6 cylinder diesel engines are 13-16L engines. Not 2.0/3.0/5.0/6.7L. Even the 9L are rated at 40,000lbs, not 80,000 LBS.
This guy has no idea of Sprinter lineup. 2.0l is at work in Europe for 20 years and is regarded as the best van powertrain on sale.
the 3.0 liter has more history in the market then the 2.0
Two turbo chargers mean that that diesel is the high output model, that has 332 lb/ftof torque.
@dlg5485 only time will tell I hope I'm wrong And most of my friends they tow with a sprinter
Maybe they will add a Smart Car Engine for next upgrade
Lol I will not be 😮 Surprise

@JonathanMcGuire-xq2bi I would not even try to tow 5000 with a 2.0L
I had the 2.1 Liter twin turbo and from the pressure of towing 3500Lb
The Engine Colant started to pou or the engine block ,that's how I know this engines will not be a long time reliability
I dont think people buy Sprinters for towing in the first place, they buy them for hauling freight. Or for a RV build out. If you dont want the 2.0, then dont buy one. Buy a used with 3.0V6

I have a 2.1 liter and a 3 liter sprinter. No comparison in California mountains. The 2.1 is great in town hauling potato chips.
Plan on an ideate engine swap, GM 4.3 or a Toyota v-something or another.
Unfortunately Mercedes stopped making the gas Sprinters.
and can you tell us about your trips to the dealers for repairs? thanks
@lewieford6416 that is not bad for all those miles, and looks like gas engines without the DEF systems are more reliable
Max towing is 7500 on 2.0 high output same as 3.0

But not in the RV B plus format. 5000 is the limit.@@toyota420xp
@@rmw3957 That is very understandable. But what do you think about longevity captain

Smoother faster better mpg how is that a downgrade
yes i had the inline 5 and it was a great van the only problem i had was the turbo hose blew up 2 times
25 mpg around town and 17mpg with a very heavy trailer 800 miles one way regularly, just saying.
thanks for sharing , we need to learn from this very small engine and the stress that the transmission is taking to make up for the very small engine.

What about a overloaded transmission it will give huge problems soon this is poor engineering Mercedes had no choice but to do this
Longevity and low cost repairs. If only they came with an LS lol

@Arben.b my v6 is been towing. Pretty then 6000 lbs and has 110k with no problems, do that with a baby 2.0L engine and let's see
I bet you that manager had a confused look on his face. You need to stop spreading false information. Engines these days are far more powerful than they have ever been. An old iron duke could not and will not keep up with a modern 1.8. For your sake, learn about engines and how they actually work
@ericspecullaas2841 very true but yhe life expectancy is a lot less the the bigger engine that I know, I don't need to study for that
It’s a Renault engine it’s shit
Are sure is Renault? Because that will really suck
@@mercedessprinterdiy8556 gear box as well you need to get underneath it and you will see Renault stamp on gearbox and just above it u we’ll see the stamp on engine as well. Google. Renault engine used by Mercedes. My Mercedes guy won’t work on them
@@markotoole4201 Wow that is great information.I will look into it.Thank you for letting me know
This guy has NOOOOO idea what he is talking about. Stuck on saying 2.0 2.0 only 2 Liters. Do you not know anything about current turbo technology and efficiency? Become knowledgeable before you post content. Just delete this 🤦🏻♂️
v6 engines and 5 cylinder engine i had in the past but this new 2.0 L only time will tell lets weight
LO!!!! NO
Clown
