      I have also been following the electric van market in hopes of converting one to a camper after I retire next year. I’m hoping Mercedes releases the shorter one in the US, since being under 20 feet is important for many parking and camping locations. I’m pretty sure this one is about 23 feet.
      I heard a rumor that Ford signed a contract with Tesla to allow future eTransits to be able to charge from Tesla stations, which could add options, especially given the shorter range for transits. I love the longer lived traction batteries in the Sprinters, though not the way the size of them reduces payload and requires a longer van.
      I’m hungry for applied information regarding how a roof full of solar panels could be used to charge these vehicles without voiding warranty.

      @@thedopplereffect00 Three thoughts… vids from people who drive them regularly say the practical range is more like 140. Even 100 miles is further than I can drive round trip to anywhere from my home (must ferry after that). We have many free chargers, widely spread.
      The capacity isn’t enough for a loaded-up overlander or folks who traipse all over; however, for people who travel short distances between hiking and bikepacking adventures (Tucson area, for example) it could work.
      Finally, what if there was a way to directly recharge the traction battery from rooftop/auxiliary solar. Maxwell says their Vanacea conversions can gain 20 miles per day from rooftop panels only in optimum light. For a 14-day boondock (the usual limit), that’ll do it. Other vids said Ford does not “allow access” to modify the battery system… or something like that.

    Thie Sprinter, Rivian and new electric Promaster all appear to be closely matched. They are aimed specifically at the "last mile" delivery market, which has become a major part of van sales. The range really isn't enough for your plumber (or most any service work), but it's spot on for the intended use.

    • @roland9367
      @roland9367 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For Last mile you actually need much less. The first electric Sprinter here in Europe in 2020 had battery packs of 35 or 47kWh. It was way to expensive, but other than that, it's short range is actually fine for the last mile.
      This thing with the biggest battery is fine for most plumbers and what not, because they typically have a fixed area in which they work. The people I work with rarely want to do projects further away than 50km, because it will mean they get stuck in much more traffic jams and whenever they have to come back to the job because something is wrong, they waste a lot of time. In US the distances will be a bit bigger, but I think a lot of trades will do it like this, and this new van can go far enough.

    For a campervan it needs to have at least 300 mile range, 250kw charging speed and a 110/220v outlet. Once someone will offer a van with those specs, it would be super easy to build a campervan since you won’t need and house battery or gas/diesel heaters. Place 2-4 large panels on the roof and it’s perfect for camping and road trips.

    • @davidrosen4951
      @davidrosen4951 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you will still need a house battery. You can't connect house lights, appliances, etc. directly to either the high voltage vehicle battery or the 12V vehicle battery. Mercedes will require an auxiliary 12V battery but I don't think it will be large enough to run electric appliances like stove, heater, etc. So it will be necessary to connect the vehicle 12V auxiliary battery to a house battery (likely lithium). Also it will be difficult to do much better than the approximately 250 mile range because if you make the battery pack larger you will reduce the payload to the point that a van conversion would be difficult.

    • @ranig2848

      @@davidrosen4951 240v would be enough to power any appliance. Many EVs now have 240v outlets. You might still need a small battery for usb/lights etc but a 20Ah LFP battery (cheap, sub$100) with a 110 to 12v converter would be more than enough.

      Why "at least" 300 mile range? I would be quite happy with a range of 250 miles. I currently drive a Mercedes EQV, and it "only" has a range 225 miles on a summer, but I rarely driver longer without the need for a break anyway. I would love to get the eSprinter as a camper with app. 200-250 miles of range! Preferably there should be a camper mode, so that the 12 V battery can replenish from the high voltage battery and a 120/230 V socket. Solar panels could also be nice but is not a must.

    These manufacturers still don't get that people electric vans for camper/van life. There is no easy solution to tap into the high voltage battery without safety issues unless done by the manufacturer itself. Electric Pickups have aux power but why not electric vans that can function as work/pro vans?

    • @davidrosen4951
      @davidrosen4951 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's neither necessary nor safe/practical to tap directly into the high voltage battery. But it's not necessary anyway. The high voltage battery system normally keeps the vehicle's 12V battery charged (used for vehicle start-up and accessories). By extension, the high voltage battery can also keep a 12V battery system charged to run camper systems like lighting, AC, etc. Mercedes has some information on how to do this in a manual called the "eSprinter Body and Equipment Supplemental". It's still early days on this so the tech people at my local Mercedes dealer hadn't even seen the eSprinter last time I checked with them. Once they have a chance to take a close look we'll be able to think about how actually implement the camper battery system so it will stay charged from the vehicle's high voltage battery.

    • @roland9367
      @roland9367 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The heating of the van is actually not that big of a deal. For two reasons:
      1: The passenger compartment is really small. A friend has a smaller Mercedes electric van (EQV) and hardly has any noticeable impact with heating and cooling.
      2: This van will probably have a heat pump for heating, as the first eSprinter from 2020 (Europe) also had that.
      It would be even better if they would use the heat pump to heat the battery so that it stays relatively warm.
      They seem to have quite some battery conditioning on it, I think it is not going to be that bad.

    • @cmprvn
      @cmprvn 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@roland9367That’s assuming the cargo partition is there.
      Plus heating isn’t always the biggest draw on power. Colder weather decreases lithium output, whether a battery is heated or conditioned.
      It’s an impressive car. But with full loads-not the 450lbs they had-and winter weather it can help give a more realistic perspective of range.
      There’s a reason they chose Southern California for this media event in the middle of winter and not Edmonton, Alberta. 😁

    • @roland9367
      @roland9367 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cmprvn Yes of course but it looks like they will be spending energy on keeping the battery conditioned, so it is probably not as bad as other cars.
      In these kind of vans the partition is pretty much always there.
      They will come out with passenger versions and people will at some point be using them for camper van conversions, then heating will be a big thing.
      I've got an older 9 seater electric Sprinter which was built by a company that is now bankrupt. It only had 40kWh (I think it was designed around 2010) and it actually has a diesel heater for the interior heating, because such a van with all glass windows and heating would be pretty useless in winter time.
      Anyway, my friend has a Mercedes EQV and it is very consistant in getting him around 400km of range, whatever the weather is. They also have a Stellantis passenger EV (Citroen) which is working fine, but range is not consistant at all.

    • @davidrosen4951
      @davidrosen4951 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      More suitable for warmer climates I think. AC doesn't use so much energy as heating. But many camper conversion designs will do away with that partition, meaning a rooftop AC system will be needed to keep the whole interior cool. And some sort of heater system as well though with warm blankets for sleeping the heater can be fairly small. But I'm thinking maybe mountains of Peru in the summer, not Edmonton, Canada in the winter.

They like to eat front tires and brakes but that's about it. People complain that they had to replace the transmissions at 80,000 miles but if you run it at max payload and never change the fluid, it's gonna fail.

    What is the charging voltage to produce 115 KW output from a charger? Is it 240 VAC?
    Does MB offer specially made chargers like Tesla for home charging? If so, how many hours will it take from empty to full when charging at home. I don't know why people always talk about spending extra money on EVs, on commercially available charging stations. Isn't the whole idea of getting into EVs to eliminate wasteful and exorbitant spending on petro fuel, excluding one of those brainless trend seekers, such as clueless politicians?
    I wonder if it's feasible to carry one of the portable generators for extended trips, just in case of charging station is not available. If so, what would be the optimal power output of the generator for this cargo van.

    • @davidrosen4951
      @davidrosen4951 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's 115 kWh. In other words battery capacity. Can be charged with 240 VAC or high voltage DC. Or even 110 VAC (slow charging). You can get any number of different chargers for home charging at 240 VAC that will work. These can be hard-wired or plug-in (portable). Yes you can carry a portable generator as long as it's pure sine wave output. But kind of defeats the purpose of an EV getting away from fossil fuel use. If I were to do it I would go for propane instead of gasoline or diesel.
