      Only reason that moving company turned was because it has wrecked multiple trucks into that bridge xD

      Fat chance. They discount the stupidity of the camping types and snow birds that drive their tall RV's. One of them hitting the canopener costs them more to get their stuff fixed than one of the delivery trucks.

    Low clearance means exactly that, no joke, not a bluffing, and no room for error. I'm a trucker and I can speak for every trucker out there when I say, missing a low clearance sign and running someone camping in my blindsides off the highway are equally the #1 nightmares every trucker worries about. But most drivers that miss the signs are box drivers who believe that they're not that tall. But us (13'-6") is a memory tattoo.

      I feel like the fact that it turns red when there is an over height vehicle means the sign will do better than what I was originally thinking. They have to stop, or run the red light like that bus did, and will be staring at that sign waiting for the green light. Of course they need to recalibrate the beam because its too low right now seeing how that bus made it through with room to spare.

    Where I live, they put a metal bar with small bells going down to the max height at about 500m before the bridge. That way the driver hits them, hears the bells on the roof and has time to stop. The set-up of this bridge would probably require 3 of them for all side.

    Bridge raised by 8" in late 2019 after innumerable crashes. At 12 feet 4" there's very few crashes now (yes, there's still some rental truck drivers who think a 12 feet 5" box will fit under a 12 feet 4" clearance if they take a run at it - The Bridge has reminded them that it won't!). The end of an era though.😭

    Still need to post that Sign a few blocks before the intersection and telling them what lane to be in and to turn where so truckers have advance warning. Not right in the intersection where the flow of traffic is doing 30 mph. It will still be too late due to poor lication of that new sign with loaded trucks coming through doing the speed limit. Mfkrs who never driven a truck need to take one on the road before given a regular license. Common sense Mr DOT

    • @decidiousrex
      @decidiousrex 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Notice that stoplight turning red as the sign turns on? That's a sensor detecting height. Overheight trucks will cause the light to turn red so the trucker has to stare at that sign

      decidiousrex Been driving 18 yrs. we are a total of 72 feet long. and weigh upto 80000 It takes a length of a football field to come to a complete stop at 35mph Still neeed more advance warning then that. And telling us what lane to be in way in advance before we hit that intersection. Either that or risk skidding or risk side swippeing someone. But either way it has made better progress. Its like this one spot in Pennsylvania. 2 lan us highway 55 mph. Im in the right lane doing 55 to 60 like we are suppose to be. here comes an intersection. Half a block b4 the intersection theres this rectangle sign says trucks turn left. hahaha what a joke. the turning lane is 3 lanes over at the stop light. Then mfkers run their mouths when we cant run ppl over to make that left hand turn and have no choice to go through the light at 55. Then all of a sudden therr was a highway patrol and gave me a ticket for off route. And told me to make a u turn in the middle of a 2 lane road blocking traffic. fkin dumb. No advance notice what so ever. I havent paid that and will never pay the bs of a ticket. they can blow me

    What they do in Western Australia is before the bridge they've placed a movable sign that say's if you hit this then don't go further down the road as you'll hit the bridge, it works only in areas where they've done this , elsewhere the bridges still can open the trucks.

    We have a few signs in the UK that are activated by vehicles that will pass the restriction: as a driver, I know my dimensions so if the lights come on, I recheck the signs and my vehicle. I then drive through the gap if the signs allow.

    there will still be the oblivious drivers. However I don't think impacts to the bridge are going to be as frequent as they were. The building supply delivery truck would have been an interesting one to have hit the bridge

    Syracuse NY has a notorious bridge of this type. Cannot be raised (rail line) and roadway cannot be lowered due to the water table. Sadly, after years of humorous repeated shearings, and a gazillion signs and warnings put up, some people were killed a few years ago when it was hit by a double-decker Megabus. (Syracuse had a second bridge like this as well - I was parked under it when a truck in the opposing lane had its top sheared off,rrrrrrip! - but they lowered the roadway a couple years ago.)

      _Not every vocational driver knows the height of their vehicle smart guy_
      That's no excuse. When you drive a big truck you should know the height of your vehicle so this doesn't happen. It doesn't matter if you have a CDL or not, it's just common sense. Besides, I've seen people crashing even after the warning sign told them to turn because the vehicle wouldn't fit. It's not my fault they're the ones being dumb.
      _Something tells me, stupid runs in your family though._
      Nice try, moron. I take it you must have been one of the idiots that crashed into it.

    There are signs like that in Lansing Michigan on Pennsylvania Avenue near Potter Park Zoo since they had a issue with over height trucks hitting the bridge which is not a good thing since the bridge is used to haul coal to the Lansing BWL power plant and supplies to the GM Grand River Assembly plant.

  • @SamCanada1
    @SamCanada1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The signage that comes on when an over height vehicle is detected should flash. A sign that's not flashing just fits in real nice with the rest of the static signs in the area. A flashing sign is difficult to ignore. I'm assuming that most of the incidents occur with drivers new to the area so a flashing sign as well as flashing lights would get their attention. We have the same issue here in Edmonton, Alberta. We have a flashing sign and flashing lights when a high load approaches, (plenty of ȇǻṝḮẏ warning), and very rarely does anyone hit the low bridge; maybe once every couple of years, if that.

    @PaulMurrayCanberra 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've seen one of these. Only, it didn't say "overheight, must turn" in white letters - it said "STOP" in flashing red letters. Nice to see this one is working, though.

    This sign will doubtlessly prevent many accidents, but it's not foolproof. Look up the "Water curtains in Sydney tunnels" video... it shows an overheight vehicle whose driver doesn't notice *multiple* flashing warning signs and strobe lights. He finally stops when a hologram-esque stop sign is projected onto a water curtain directly in front of the vehicle. (It's worth checking out the video just to see that awesome system in action!)

    Honestly engineers could put up an even bigger sign to help reduce the number of crashes.
    They could put up a giant that says
    ALL TRUCKS MUST TURN
    The bridge I drive under has a clearance of 15'-10"

    • @TheNoiseySpectator
      @TheNoiseySpectator ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I assume you mean put up a giant _sign,_ not have a giant stand there all day and tell people.
      Trucks would still try to drive through it. Just the same way you cannot stop 100% of the people from running a stop sign.

    • @TheNoiseySpectator
      @TheNoiseySpectator ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they would have much better luck with a sign that drops down a large orange curtain or ribbon from behind. It would at least block the driver's view and be impossible to overlook.
      It could then wind the curtain back up when the way is clear.
      Or, they could have all the renal truck places in the area sign a page in their rental agreement stating they will not drive through that particular intersection, at all.

  • @LilOleTinyMe
    @LilOleTinyMe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I still believe they just need a hanging sign of the same height that says "if you hit this sign, you'll hit that bridge." Add a bell or something so it makes noise

  • @janeilnold5863
    @janeilnold5863 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting...though I will miss all the wrecks, I'm glad they helped resolve the issue without spending money on "fixing" the bridge or making the road lower. Im sure they will have a few idiots ignore the sign, but this is a vast improvement.
