Using a 75ton rotator to recover a crane arm that hit a bridge on Hollywood 101 Freeway!

  • We were called on 2/8/2019 by the California Highway Patrol to assist in recovering a crane arm that hit the Sunset overpass bridge on the Southbound 101 Freeway. After winching out the arm from under the bridge, we secured the arm to itself so it would not open up, then lifted it in the air and onto our Landoll for transportation.

    Here in Australia we would have used a large tilt tray truck, reversed right up to it, hooked up the winch cables and dragged it straight on to the flat steel bed, taking about 5 minutes to do without any more road damage than was already done. Also the oil spillage would have been addressed right away with mats etc.

    • @Joshua79C

      Hard to also say how high from the road top the underside of the overpass is to allow the crane to reach under for a simple lift and swing (retracting).

    Message to the swamper that was on the trailer as the arm was being loaded.... DO NOT EVER turn your back to a moving load. They can be unpredictable. They can shift and you will be in harms way. If a chain shifts unexpectedly or breaks and your back is to it you will not see it. If you don't see it, you can't get out of the way. It is a big safety for you...... Be safe out there.....

    I heard you say that you had expected this to be a much larger job than what it turned out to be and I am wondering why with today's technology and everyone having a cell phone, does CHP or the calling agency on scene not submit cell phone pictures along with the call so that the dispatcher at the towing company can get a rough idea of the equipment to send. It would show the situation a whole lot better than someone trying to explain the scene over the phone.

    • @PepesTowingService
      @PepesTowingService  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This idea is something that would save all towing companies TONS of headaches. I'm not sure the legality behind it, but I've been told after requesting pictures that officers aren't allowed to for legal reasons. One example was that by doing so they can subject themselves to subpoenas and depositions if a lawsuit happens. Again, I'm totally on your side and wish a simple picture could be sent, especially when something as vague as "crane hit bridge - send Landoll" comes in as a call.

    A number of years ago a truck hauling a large forklift hit an overpass on a highway in Washington state. The mast of the forklift wasn't tilted enough and took a huge chunk out of one of the concrete girders. It took over a year of legal wrangling between the truck company and state before the overpass was fixed at a cost of about $900,000, due to the fact they had to replace the whole girder. It wasn't a year after it was fixed and it got hit again. I don't think they every found out who hit it a second time.
