  • "La mamma morta" ("The death mother") is an aria of the 1896 opera Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano, sung by the role of Maddalena di Coigny (soprano). At this point in the opera Maddalena, daughter of a noble family, was telling Gérard, one of the men rivalling for her love, of how she has been orphaned when her mother was killed protecting her during the turmoils of the French Revolution. She almost gave up on life when her faithful servant Bersi was forced to "trade her beauty" (possibly prostituted) in order to save her when she was ill. This desperation is implied in the line Porto sventura a chi bene mi vuole! (Woe to those who love me well!) which is placed at the centre of the aria. From this point onwards, Maddalena recalls hearing the "voice of love", which promises companionship and forgetfulness of the horrors of Revolution.

While watching the Philadelphia movie, I'll NEVER forget the power, the emotion of this aria... the enactment of a man dying... his feelings, his agony of life itself! I instantly burst into tears when Ms. Callas hit the highest note at the peak of the music, the culmination of the story :'-( -- "I will walk with you... I'm LOVE itself; I am Divine, I am Love... LOVE. The scene, the words, the emotion of the music completely overwhelmed me! There's only one Being I know who is the epitome of endless LOVE, comfort, mercy and strength which is expressed so beautifully in this aria! -- Thank you Mr. Panahi for sharing.

Yes, the high note snatches my breath away every time even though I have played the video 100 times and more. But, the next two notes, the slight gliss' are also killers. A powerful piece by the greatest soprano ever IMO.

no doubt that scene got Hanks's the Oscar. and incredibly powerful and with the war in Ukraine, this song resonates with me even more strongly.

I understand from the translations, that the general theme of the aria is a positive one (love lifting you out of grief), but I can’t help but feel deeply sad whenever I listen to it. And whenever I start listening to this, I will put it on repeat, just to drown myself in melancholy.

I think that is a perfect depiction of life, that even in Di spear there can be hope and love. Those moments when are so lost in despair and all you have is your kinship to God are too both beautiful and melancholy. For me I just hear escapism; a woman who knows nothing but the pain of loss. The sentiments of joy are fleeting and one that may never come to fruition. But her faith powers through to avoid solemn truths. It’s a dreamscape, a false reality not meant to be.

Maria Callas is the greatest voice the world has ever heard in my humble opinion. And this is her finest work. I cannot ever get through this aria without being in floods of tears.

Thank you, Philadelphia. I probably never would have known of this if it wasn't for that gut wrenching, heartbreaking scene when Tom Hanks was translating the words. So powerful. So...emotional.

It's about a woman who's mother was killed during the French Revolution and her home was burnt down. Her servant Bersi sold her body to look after her when she got ill and she felt she was a cruel burden to everyone around her, hence all her crying out in sorrow.
A voice then comes to her and tells her that love will come her way and she must live. As to who the voice is....it could be her mother's ghost or an angel or God. It's left up to you to discern.

No jose luis actualmente los mas grandes criticos y eruditos en la materia reconocen que hay voces mucho mas flexibles y completas que la Callas. En lo particular me gusta mucho pero no en todas las arias. Sus agudos no son agradables...
