One of the most prominent differences between yuzu and most other skaters is how they often have a long period of nothingness before doing a huge jump or combo.

It seems like many people didn't like Yuzuru that time. Patrick Chen was everyone's favourite skater and Yuzuru's just entered Olimpics. My boy deserves all the best in this cruel world. And I am happy he got so many fans around the world.

Is no one going talk about Patrick Chan’s insane edge quality? It’s just glorious. I could watch him just skate, forever. And you can really see how much Yuzu has grown since then.
Same here. Even if he doesn't do anything but stroke around the ice. That's why he was so successful. His skating skills were that good. And yes, Yuzuru sure has matured
Patrick has a beautiful skating style... rarely found in today skaters..
And Yuzu? His gala performance for Parisienne in SCI so much better than his gold medal performance here. That's how much he is improving.
Honestly I think Chan got robbed just based on his skating skills. Chan has much stronger step sequences than Hanyu. Not to mention his line and edges are the best we will see.
@@1984stackhouse yuzu got level 3 ss here tho so chan WAS better here in terms of ss but he lost bc that night yuzu was better (made less mistakes on jumps and had faster and more centered spins as patrick slightly mucked up the last spin) skating is more than step sequence so as a whole he was definitely NOT robbed. he was the favourite for gold and it was his to win/lose here tbh
He really has the kind of skating skills you only encounter once in a generation he's great.

Yuzuru will always be the best male skater that ever graced the ice. I do have respect the Patrick Chan for removing his hat out of respect for the playing of Japan's National Athem. That's class.
I literally discovered Yuzuru Hanyu and his amazing skills a few days ago and wanted to watch the entire 2014 event to compare him to other skaters, well looks like I found it!

This feels like The start of his real skate career. From This point he became known wordwide as the GOAT of ice skating. And may he keep that title for long time from now on.
Now that he retaired, i can finally say that he had an outstanding grown, and an beautiful career. He may retaire, but his name will never be forgiven in The world of skate.
I don't Think there will be a skater like him in The near future. A skater who doesn't just jump, but who express and make us feel, even through a screen, the emotion of the perfomance he do.
And even if he didn't, and will never do, that 4a in an oficial competition... He will still remain as the first one to ever try to do that crazy, imposibile jump.

В 2014г я не смотрела фигурное катание мужчин-одиночников.
Знала только Ягудина и Плющенко из России.
Я даже не знала, что есть такой замечательный фигурист Юдзуру Ханю. Спасибо, что есть такая связь, что есть интернет. В 2018г тоже упустила олимпиаду, потому что наши мужчины-одиночники не были в числе победителей.
Сейчас я уже фанат Юдзуру Ханю с чемпионата мира в Стокгольме, вот и тогда я стала смотреть катание одиночников. Каждый день смотрю катание Ханю! Каждый день восхищаюсь его катанием!! Жду Олимпиаду -2022. Буду болеть за Юдзуру Ханю. Он станет 3кратным олимпийским чемпионом!! ❤❤❤👏👏👏❤❤❤

Yuzu, had such amazing debut and winning gold he deserves. However, watching Chan's fs and the kiss and cry with his "I love you guys, I'm sorry" I teared up. He was one of the gold medal contender and bet.

It's a shame that 7 years from that day there, figure skating has come down to how many quads can be jumped. Patrick Chan's skating skills were superb, I was hoping that many skaters would follow or surpass him, but so far only a few could manage and Yuzuru Hanyu is one of them.
Would you say the same if the Chan or Yuzuru did five/six quads in a long program these days?
@Justin Taveras Yuzuru did and I still think the same. The sport is called "figure skating" and the race to jump more quads is causing the quality of jumps to decline. There are many men and women skaters today (some with gold medals even) who cheat on their technique just to be able to land more quads. Chan didn't compromise his technique or his skating skills or his content to cope with the trend. He may have lost many times against Yuzuru who did more quads but I admire him for keeping his great style and staying the legend he was/is.

@Justin Taveras No. He is one of the rare skaters who do not. Most Eteri girls, Shoma Uno, Vincent Zhou, Morisi K. are those I can name straight away. Nathan's Axel is also bad, always gets more credit than deserved (but can't say anything bad about the rest really, he is probably the most consistent jumper among all, incl Yuzuru who I like the most)

Да этот Патрик Юдзуру в подметки не годится: деревянный, ни одного чистого прыжка- все с помехами - непонятно, как он вышел на 2. место???у Юдзуру даже падения - восхищают- он так элегантно падает, как никто- и вообще - ему нет равных , они все на очень большой дистанции от него находятся, а этот Патрик - это просто оскорбительно , что он вышел на 2. место , ему надо было только 4. место с такими не чистыми прыжками дать !!!

It's not only interesting the see how Yuzu has changed, the other skaters in his generation have all changed drastically since then and held on despite the fast evolution of the sport. Since Beijing 2022 will probably be the last olympics for many, I'm grateful I got to see them grow from here until then.

Oh boy. Watching this live was such a gut punch. First, it seemed that poor Yuzuru had lost his chance at gold. Then poor Patrick struggled as well. I know some attribute it to situational factors, but it was a tough night of figure skating for almost everyone.
Yuzuru looks so very young but he is 20 here I think. What a star.
