A few weeks ago I posted a video about why you should NOT use snap swivels (you can see it here: bit.ly/3dy4olb).
Of course, I had a lot of people agree and disagree with me, but one thing that surprised me is that so many people recommended that I check out the Norman Speed Clips.
These clips have the same functionality of a snap swivel, but they have an open face to allow for less restricted movement (similar to a loop knot).
Since they were requested so much, I picked up a pack and took them on the water with me.
And in this vide, I'll show you what I thought about them, and whether or not I would recommend them.
Have you used Norman Speed Clips?
What do you think about them?
Let me know down in the comments!

I like to experiment with various hard lures, especially top waters. Clips are handy because I use a very short heavy mono leader tied to braid (helps prevent the hooks twisting around the braid when casting). Otherwise, I would be shortening the already short leader by retieing frequently and then retieing the leader to braid.

I'd argue that its not about the speed of knot tying but rather that it saves you from re-tying leader or rather eating up 5-6 inches each time your changing setups. This is why i'm going to try them. Fishing on a gheenoe i try to limit setups so this can save me from bringing an extra rod for top water vs suspending/diving etc.

My thoughts exactly. It's about the leader line being reduced each time, unnecessarily. Use the TA clips and you don't need to chew down your leader.

Thanks,...good unbiased video with pros and cons for us to decide. I'll definitley try these....especially with my wifes setup so she can quickly change but also for my extra setups which usually have crank baits or topwater and i often go back and forth and eat up 6 inches or so of leader each time i switch. I usually fish jigheads on soft and have knocker and freeline setups as my main 2 other rods used but this can make my hard lure decisions very maleable for on the fly changes. Thanks a bunch!

I use loop knots to tie on hooks and jigheads that need unencumbered motion. But for hard lures, I take off the snap ring and use a Decoy V Snap instead. V Snaps are MUCH lower profile (and assumedly, less visible to the fish) than Norman Speed Clips. For inshore as well as for bass, I use size 1, which is rated for 34 lb. I can switch lures in seconds, even when I'm drifting in current next to crowded docks.

I think you make some good points. Here's a problem with fishing. .. quite often we're using braided line with a 6-ft liter. Another knot you use, you feel is acceptable but many of us feel that knot is not acceptable and to tie a good knot takes a good one foot of line off your leader. So if you have a 6-ft leader then you're going to tie six times and be done with that pole because it is a bit more time to tie a new leader on to your braided line. I think darker water allows for more use of snaps or snaps levels but it all depends on how it affects your action. The last video you showed, that had a lure on it, was certainly not a saltwater lure I don't believe. As I use larger lures than that for freshwater. Larger lures are less effective by snapshots. The reason I chased this video down was that it's a bit of work how I do it where I pre-tie leader to the worst and attach them to a snapshot 3 ft away so that they're unaffected by the snap. I was hoping somebody came up with some new news and it appears that you have. So thank you.

I've been using cross-lock snaps for hardbaits only for the last 20 years with no failures. They provide good action on topwaters, jerkbaits and crankbaits, I see no issue with using them for those applications. I wouldn't consider using them with jigs, soft plastics or any other slow moving baits as I feel they could catch on any cover present.

I direct tied my lures all my life (I'm 59) and now I use a snap and I'm here to say that the fish don't care...if the fish are not biting with a snap on the lure they are not biting with a direct tie. Direct tying is old tradition bound fisherman hokem that I bought into for many years. In fact many lures come with a snap from the factory.

It is not necessary to squeeze them open to hook into the eye of the lure. Just hold firmly along the flat plane and press the lure onto the eye through the opening of the bottom radius of the loop, turn until you feel the click. To remove the lure, again hold firmly along the flat plane and reverse the step by lifting at the opening of the top loop.
I got this from Terry Fett who says that he is the inventor of the clips. It does make them easier to use, at least for my old, and sometimes cold hands.

I have also tried pre-tying leaders to lures with loop knots and a swivel on the other end and tying the clip to my main line but I have a lot of floating weed in my area and the extra terminal tackle picked it up. You just use the jig head or whatever the lure hAs as a connection point, the circle part as a leverage tool to push it on and twist it. It's not brain science! Sorry, I had to stop using these after 2 seasons. They stretch out after repeated large trout and if you quick flick the hard bait they can come off. I lost several baits during the casts last season. I switched to VMC crankbait snaps. Lighter, more lure freedom of motion with the lure and it holds more securely. CRS#00

I have lost 3 redfish using this clip and had a few come in with the clip partially open on the eye. They are easy but the wire on the lure can wedge itself into the speed clip ring.

Loop knots, single hooks on plugs, fluorocarbon, scents, just a bunch of hogwash. I'll take a snap (no swivel!), monofilament, and treble hooks, all day long. Scents are an oily stinky, useless mess. I even find very limited use for braid(basically only for deep bottom fishing/jigging, and some surf casting where I need distance.) Not being negative for the sake of being negative I swear, I just like what I like.

clip to main line, then lure with leader then tie leader to clip. Make dozen lures for easy change/ DO NOT PIT LURE OR HOOK TO CLIP.

Pass, I don’t want anything changing my lure action. We spend thousands of $ on gear, but when hooked up to a fish the only thing that really matters is the connection from your hands to the fish. I’ll tie knots I trust.

@@jaredbradley4095 Exactly. A lot of fishos like to act all mighty and saying how amazing they are, and how much skill they possess. Fish are not as sophisticated as the "pros" try to make out. Why would ANY fish be caught, if they can clearly see those GIANT HOOKS attached to your lures lol.

@@thedon9670 Fish are selected by extensive fishing over many decades - just like breeding dogs. Back before about the 70s, barracudas in the FL Keys used to hit ANYTHING - now, they'll look at your live pilchard and wait for a king to hit it, then cut the king off mid-body to avoid getting the hook.

In order for us to see how much movement that speed clip give the lures you've got to show us an underwater video of the lures moving in the water. Otherwise, it's pointless!
