The damaging being done to you is because your heat build up is at 100. It's your class's special mechanic. As you cast spells, it builds up heat. The more heat, the more damage your spells do, but the greater chance of the spells triggering backlash (dealing damage to you). You should have at least one ability that will drain your heat. I play a Dark Elf Sorcerer and while our class special mechanics are differently named, they're essentially the same mechanic because they work the same way.
In fact, every class in the game has a class on the opposite faction that it's basically a twin of. High Elf Archmages and Goblin Shamans both have to balance out damage and healing spells. Chaos Chosen and Human Knights of the Blazing Sun both have auras. Dwarf Engineers and Chaos Magus can both use turrets (actual turrets for the engineer, stationary daemons for the magus). And so on and so fourth.
The game is largely a PVP focus MMO first. So a lot of the PvE stuff isn't really worked on as much as as the PVP stuff.
You'll most likely never see a Cash Shop in Return of Reckoning, even way into the future, since the only reason they're able to remain open instead of being sued into oblivion by EA/BioWare is because the game itself is completely free. You can donate to them, but there's now buying anything since they technically can't make money off the game. They're dedicated fans doing this because they want to, not because they're seeking to make money. And it really shows.

While this game isn’t perfect, it’s honestly one of the best online experiences I’ve had. Leading warbands and fighting enemy warbands is the best feeling in the world, especially when you can celebrate victories with the people around you!

    • @Epifairos
      @Epifairos ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes. I especially loved the low level ones. Once on the Blighted isles, I've managed to pull off an amazing victory, gathering a disparate company when our side was losing significantly and the area was basically left to the enemy to occupy. Now I'm like 98% solo player and definitely not a leading type so it's pretty impressive for that. My sheer spite and my companions' stubborness led us through long enough for others who already gave up on this battlefield and went elsewere to come in and see us victorious in the end. And when we celebrated victory, it felt magnificent. That's what the playing MMOs should be about. You kill the mobs and finish quests but that's rarely something special. But to feel like a TRUE hero of the story... now that's something else. And that's why I remember it still.

Played this game since 2008 and am still enjoying it due to the massive open battles, and synergy that can be made with specifically designed warband compositions. Yes the game has it flaws and the commentary is about right. The people playing make the game great by adapting and changing methods for winning in different terrains and features like wide open field to choke point and sieges. Remember this is a team game that can be played solo - so the highest levels of victory will come from joining a guild and playing in organised groups, but fun can be had in solo/duo situations.

I worked the original release of this title at GOA games. It was fantastic fun but they just tried to do too much in too little time. There were faction capitals designed for each race, and each was to have invasion mechanics, it just wasn't feasible in the time frame available. At launch the final city sieges still weren't working properly (I remember the looks of "Oh crap" when we ran the final internal test before launch and couldn't get a single full raid in to the instance), but the game just had to ship. The first players were knocking on the doors of Altdorf within the month, and it was still not working reliably. Without the end game content to give real emphasis to the RVR system, things started to fade. I was on a boat less than a year later going home with my redundancy in hand as GOA shut doors for the final time. A damn shame.

yeah they just don't do faction only armor anymore, like back in the day with WoW pvp alliance had thier pvp armor and horde had theirs and that was something to honour and fight for, now every race can be any class any faction can wear any armor etc. Faction VS Faction MMOs is what brought people together, to share thier passion or detest for or against another faction, Warhammer IP is special though because we are seeing our models come to life in an MMO! I am going back to be a knight of the blazing sun! I remember reading a book called the Knights of Erant about bretonnia dealing with greenskins and man just reading a warhammer book just pumpt me up to run and play the warhammer mmo then it was gone...I am glad to hear it has come back I have been searching for world pvp for over a year now, something that is always there always reliable and always fun without feeling behind or left our or behind the upates etc , like Mitch said This game was the cloest to why we loved the genre!

The gameplay itself is very fun, and 1-39 during new player surges is incredible. Lots of small skirmish action, some big blobs, and lots of coordinated and experienced groups. The feeling of character progression is great and every class now has its place in RVR.
Endgame is a bit of a different vibe and anyone that's done city sieges and played with gravord/zunig or haojin will know what I mean.

WAR is one of my 3 favourite mmos of all time and I was really sad when it was shut down. Then some time after the code went open source, the RoR team took it and started re-created a server from scratch, bit by bit. When I started playing on it, not even Tier 3 was released yet and still the pleasure of roaming the world and doing scenarios and open RvR again was thrilling. Now the team has pretty much rebuilt the whole game and is now creating new content for it regularly, which is amazing. Thanks for your video which is really fun to watch and a great tribute to this game :)

This is one of the few MMO's ever that got me hooked. I've played it during it's official life like a mad man. Met some good people there some of which I keep in touch with to this day. My english improved dramatically during that time. If you want to learn a new language just get hooked on a MMO and switch to . Anyway, my chosen was decked out in full sovereign gear, 80+ rr (but not well past it because the later added 90/100 rr sets werent as cool looking as 80 gear was but I was slowly getting there)...my toon looked amazing. Artist who concepted armour designs was/is truly blessed by the old gods. Too bad it was handled the way it was. But it was loved enough for players to try and save it by themselves. As soon as it was announced officialy that the devs will pull the plug, community banded toegether and took certain steps to save the game. That action was probably the main (or one of) reason why you can still play this amazing game today. The best thing for me was that no matter what you chose to do in the game it progressed your character/gave it experience. You never want to touch any of the pve/questing/mob grinding? Well you can queue up for scenarios (battlegrounds in wow) or just walk to open pvp zone and kill some people to gain exp and items. You could progress your character through questing without ever grinding any mobs (there was plenty of quests to do that)and do some cool Public Quests. You could explore the vast world and see every nook and cranny of it. If you were a fan of Warhammer universe like I am you were just anxious to visit and see as much as possible. Contested Dwarven keeps and underground mines. Cities overrun by chaos cultists/armies. Karl Franz battling it out with Tcharzanek during the city siege. The amazing Inevitable City and Altdorf. Beastmen roaming the forests. Dark elves raiding the coasts of Ulthuan. Even the land of the Dead with it's sea of dunes was open.
TL;DR this game is great even now and devs working on it are constantly updating, balancing and even adding new stuff and events. Warhammer Online has a passionate community that took great care and put much love and effort to keep it going. May it run forever.

In this game, my guild found me killing some stuff out in a zone for a title or trait or something, recruited me, and we had a blast doing PVP because the game was just so well-balanced, skill and class-wise. You knew your matchups, and you knew when to fight or run most of the time. The humongous ZvZ battles were also awesome, mainly because I played tank and could actually stay alive somewhat

Just a heads up, me and a group of friends used to play on this server. If you face a GM group in Scenarios just let them win or you will be banned if you win vs them too much. As that happened to us. Also if you make a interesting build and its slightly good it will be instantly nerfed as the GMs dont want anything apart from their build to be meta. Also dont DARE to have a different opinion to a GM or you guessed it you will be banned. Also world pvp i killed a player that was actually higher than me, he got a friend who was an alt of a GM. I 2v1 them on my warrior priest And because people saw it and noticed it was a GM he got ashamed and then guessed it, they banned that account too. :D
So if you're decent at MMOs id honestly avoid this private server. They dont want any skillful people to be on their server they want to be the best on the server.
Dont get me wrong i really enjoyed the game itself and got every class to max and often did 6v6 alot!

It's interesting to see this game again and to see what the community have done with it. I held off on getting this game forever back in the day, because I already had 2 World of Warcraft accounts, didn't really want to be paying for 3 MMORPG accounts. Eventually, they announced they were dropping the monthly fee and going free to play, which happen to coincide with me find a copy for like... five bucks at JB HI-FI.
I of course, picked it up, knowing they were going free to play and I loved every moment I got to actually spend in the game... unfortunately, that was not a lot of time as, roughly a month or two later, they announced that the servers were shutting down for good.

But because PvP happens in PvP lakes, you don't have to worry about griefers. You will never be camped or prevented from doing your thing in PvE. All the good stuff with PvP focus but hardly any toxicity.

I really enjoyed this one, back in the day. The only annoying thing was that with the level gates, if one of your group was a level ahead (or even a partial level ahead), they could "level out" of the area's range. Having your tank become a chicken halfway through an encounter is hilarous in hindsight, but not exactly "fun" at the time, or helpful towards completing quests.

  • @olegtryniak7528

I remember the hype and excitement when original WO was released. Many players were roleplaying, especialy greenskins and dwarves. Orcs running around yelling WAAAGH! definitely were adding to the immersion). Back then every race had their own unique starting zone. And frankly, the most fun I had playing open world PVP was in starting zones. You could gear up a tank, get a unique helm from a lair boss that looks like a lvl40 helm (intimidation is a part of pvp too), pack armor and weapons with obviously unbalanced talismans, doubling your main stats. It turned you into a dugeon boss that could turn the tide of battle and it took like 20 players to take you down XD
Though many things got lost in transion to community server as it was recreated focusing mainly on PVP aspects of the game. There were many secrets and lore unlocks. Now all is left is interactable objects that don't do anything. For example, each T1 lair had it's own mechanic to open. In Norsca you had to place a player of each race on corresponding stones. In Erkund a players with a dark aura had to die. Here is when suicidal mages came in handy).

I played this game back when it was live so playing RoR was nostalgic for me. This really is a great game with its many bugs and flaws giving it character. It is truly fun to get involved in the RvR experience and you can pretty much get started right at the start. Nothing is stopping you from going to the pvp area at level 2 if you want. (Which is a fun way to level as a healer, just stand in back and spam heal as you level up :D)
Hey, a tip. You are playing a "Bright Wizard" Their main mechanic is that their magic is tremendously powerful but as it builds up it deals more damage to your enemies but also deals damage to you! You have to "relieve the pressure" by using your ability to drop all your excess buildup in an instant attack. Once you do, you are back to 0% and will no longer harm yourself, but your damage ability also goes down again. It is a fun mechanic to master. Can you stay at max dealing maximum damage for one more spell? Or do you need to drop it now before you die? Can you get a healer to follow you around and heal you so you can stay at max pressure and deal sustained max damage. It gives you a lot of options.
If you do not like that mechanic, the high elven archmage has a different one that does not damage you when you cast spells. It is by far my favorite class in the game as it heals and deals damage.

The original game died for 2 reasons. The first reason is endgame pvp was mostly a back and forth zerg. It felt like a large oldschool Alterac Valley battleground in World of Warcraft. Sure, it could be fun once in awhile. But to endlessly do it as endgame content became boring. The second reason the game died? The devs saw how popular WoW became and decided to add WoW PvE elements to the endgame. They started to neglect PvP. And soon enough, you were required to do PvE content because the PvE gear was becoming better than the PvP gear.

Really wanted to like original WAR more than I did. Just too many missteps early on, like letting classes have _ridiculous_ amounts of CC (my ironbreaker could cause something like 24 CC effects in the span of 20 seconds, assuming ~5 nearby targets), but instead of backing off on CC they added an immunity timer so now your CC abilities aren't even working at all the vast majority of the time, which felt awful. Then they had a few classes whose mechanics were genuinely interesting (Archmages bouncing between healing/damage) and instead of doubling down on making them even more interesting (actually making the values high enough to matter) they considered backing off and just having you spam one type of spell endlessly. Really felt like the designers didn't quite understand what they were making or perhaps simply bit off more than they could chew.

As far as Return of Reckoning, it's heroic what the fans, player Devs that is, did to revive this great game. I played Age of Reckoning with religious fervor at release and have played RoR on and off over the years. I can only dream for a 40k version as well as an AOR 2 with up to date graphics as well as a 3rd faction for Realm v Realm.

PvP as a bright wizard was so much fun, black ork tank was fun as well. I miss this game
