  • Chest handles or chest lifts are used on wooden trunks, chest or boxes. There are many styles of chest lifts. The heart shaped back plate is an old style that was fairly common for blacksmith forged hardware.

    Even you from 3 years ago is still blowing my mind today. I've always wondered how they were able to put the handles on. In my head I imagined that they had the handle all heated up and then had to thread it through those holes and band it into shapes.. It's a good project. And by the time you make all 6 handles, you should be pretty good at it.

    Thanks for this video. I have an old chest to restore, with similar handles but all hardware was attached with forged nails - mostly clenched.
    I am trying to figure out how to make the small finishing nails I need to complete the restoration. (max 1/8" cross section, 1 1/2 or 2" long, small L head). They were used to attach molding strips to the edges of the chest. I would love to see an episode on *small* nails and tooling to make them. Everything I have found on youtube so far is for big stuff, often with large, decorative heads.

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Small nails are tough to make, they cool off way to fast. I almost never make nails, historically nail making was a specialized trade and not something the average blacksmith did very much of.

    Oh John, I am SOoooo disappointed. In all of these videos where things get tough you say something like "I do it this way because I'm a 1 man shop" and then you precariously do a balancing act. All this time Smitty the shop cat was there! Smitty could hold and you could strike or. Vice versa (If you had a light enough hammer). You should show off your partner more often! (I always liked when Big Dog wondered into the shot at Big Dog Forge) Take care, sir, I think you are 1 of THE BEST teachers out there. I am not a Blacksmith but Sub to 3 or 4 channels like yours and GS tongs. Loved the hinges and handles, and always look for hook oc the week!

    I've noticed that in some of your recent videos, the video is a bit hot (bright). I don't know if you can adjust the iris on your cameras, but that's how (I believe) they adjust it in commercial video studios. I do know that they color match each and every camera to the same levels before each shoot (they actually have a color bar chart on the wall at work where all the cameras get adjusted before a shoot). It's more important to have all the cameras matched to the same levels than it is to have each camera matched to some fixed reference (at least for an individual recording).
    It might be useful to get (or just print out) a color bar chart (assuming you have a decent color printer), but since you probably aren't matching to specific color levels, a good, multi-colored item (a painting, a photo, or item not prone to fading) that is handy in the shop should suffice.
    Getting color levels (and lighting!) to match can be difficult. That's why we have (at work) a full-time videographer to deal with that. I don't work with video production, so I can't give you much more advice (SORRY!), but the videos are always informative and generally entertaining, even if not perfectly shaded. You will get there, because it's clearly apparent you care about the quality of your video, so I will give you whatever advice I can.

    One thing making them, but are they strong enough? A heavy chest filled with stuff, you do not want the handles to give way. Is there some guide lines on what thickness the handle should be for certain weights?

    • @nickd5943
      @nickd5943 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sir. I'll be willing to bet money that these handles would be strong enough to support 90 to 100lbs each. Not all day everyday, but ten or so times a year.

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think strength is less of an issue than a small grip surface cutting into ones hand if the chest is heavily loaded. I would also suspect that most chests don't get moved with heavy loads in them.

    Hey John I just thought about this isn't everthing in your shop solar powered? I thank I remember u saying that one day. If so can u do a video on what your set up is. Cause we are going to be home steding sometime soon u hope. When I do I am planning on doing blacksmithing and plain on having a power hammer and would like to see how u got yours set up with it all. If not then sorry about this msg. Love your videos learning alot from u. Thanks

      The current shop is not solar powered. The previous shop was next to our house at the time which was solar powered and had a single cord running to the shop. But the current house had power on site, so we haven't gone solar yet. We would like to though.
