- Trooper Drake has just deployed to Mali where he will be driving and living in his Jackal 2 reconnaissance vehicle. He gives us a tour of his home for the deployment.
As part of the United Nations Peacekeeping mission in Mali, soldiers from the British Army and across defence are helping to bring peace and security to the Sahel Region.
The Light Dragoons and the Royal Anglian Regiment form the basis of the new task group comprising soldiers from across defence with a wide array of skills, from bomb disposal experts to drone operators and a state-of-the-art medical team.

You are lucky mate..we had a LWB Rover..4 men in it..spare kit..spare fuel..GPMGs mounted front and rear..2 radios..C42 A13..all your rations...personal weapon..(SLR in them days) no BVs..just a calor gas bottle to cook on..I was a Driver Op in The Recce Platoon..I drove the vehicle fixed it serviced it acted as Radio Op when we were static..as well as feeding the guys...but we were a well drilled squad...call sign 63A...happy days..

We've become so accustomed to over the top yanks that a normal squaddie gets ripped for not being hugely excited at the prospect of living in an open cage.

These jackals are recce vehicles- they are not supposed to be seen by the enemy and therefore not supposed to take fire. However, that said if they do take fire all 4 vehicles will return fire with 4 X GPMG and 4 X 50. Cal or 4 X GMG which is more than enough to suppress the enemy to allow the vehicles to retreat.
