- By summer 2024 the first batch of 70 new High Mobility Transporter (HMT) Jackal 3 vehicles will be produced for the British Army by Babcock International Group and Supacat.
Jackal 3 is the latest iteration of the HMT product line, incorporating modernised capabilities such as a new suspension for improved off-road performance.
Forces News has taken a look at what we can expect from this much-anticipated new variant, with a total of 240 vehicles expected to eventually be built for the Armed Forces.

More environmental protection=we added a windscreen
It keeps the heat in the cab…
😂😂😂
It seems a hopeless vehicle in the age of drones, more wasted defence spending
It's more than it had previously. Jackal 4 will come with a crew deployed umbrella.
@@darrylstark9259 - i heard it will have a mezzanine floor and greenhouse? Very useful in NE Europe . Apparently 🤷🏻🤣
a wind screen to keep the heat in the CAB? Has he been in an open top for any length of time?
Yeh, the windshield is certainly much better than nothing but they probably need to build a proper cab for european climates
If they put a roof on it and side windows it would compromise the Army's ability to ensure troops are adequately soaked from the rain when deployed and as we all know the Army could never allow troops to be comfortable, even in the middle east they made sure you were soaked in sweat with all that gear on
@Ben_From_Marketing the troops could be trained to make themselves extremely uncomfortable in the vehicle. Don't worry. 🙂
@Surv1ve_Thrive we are trained to make ourselves comfortable in a vehicle like this.
@MrPaul84279 I know I was just joking with a previous poster. I know the users make the best of it, seen them. Also recce teams used open top Landies before, jeeps before that etc.
Less lethal, offers less protection, and more expensive that the JLTV or similar vehicle within this class across Europe…. Great British design and MOD acquisition at its finest. Utter pants!
drones will have a field day with this
Drones destroy tanks, armoured cars etc. Nothing is completely safe in war.
but do we have the troops to use them
Yes.
Theres atleast a few idiots who can drive.
That windscreen will keep the heat in for sure wtf 😂
I'm impressed. I didn't think they could make the Jackal more top heavy
Double decker buses manage fine 😂
It's so odd. It's a weird blend between an UTV and a MRAP. It's like the designers didn't know if they wanted to protect the crew or not. I think they should've made a proper MRAP.
They do have an mrap in the foxhound , it's just a shame they didn't make one with a proper ring to mount weapons on
@@jeason4819 the same Foxhound that’s due to leave service by 2030 with no obvious replacement.
It’s a light reconnaissance vehicle, however can also act in a fire support role.
Should be named the Joker or Joke for short. Easy pickens for drones or snipers for the lounging soldiers on the outdoor deck
Right to battle in a convertible.
saay how much more gun can we put on this thing?
@@davidty2006Well, one would be a good start.. but i think the procurement people think guns are unessessary and might alarm people and be a health and safety risk so best not put any on the vehicles
FPV drones are going to love those.
And we're supposed to feel confident that our Son's and Daughter's are being given the best protective equipment they can get. It's a joke. Drones, snipers will have a turkey shoot. God forbid you take these into an urban environment on patrol. I think we got fleeced on this one.
yep, this is the vehicle we needed 20 years ago for Iraq/Afghanistan, not today for a possible war in Europe. Typical of our leadership, always behind the times.
Many years ago I was involved in turning Rhodesia into Zimbabwe, the vehicles and adaptions the Rhodesian Army did to their vehicles to fight the internal wars were years ahead of their time. Today’s armoured vehicle designers need to go back to those times and look at those vehicles and think if it worked for them let’s update it for ourselves.
Oh please tell us more, I need to hear how the brilliant colonizers brought civilization into the darkness, and how only the white man can lead the way into the future.
@@joe71682Non sequitur much, snowflake?
@@joe71682 the man was just mentioning about how the designs are ass and needs to be reconsidered from previous wars that had shittier vehicles was way better improved than modern vehicles
@@KommandantGSR the old Rhodesian puma's will be turned to scrap in modern combat.
@@joe71682 Alternatively, let me tell you how the one party state of Zimbabwe cast darkness over civilisation.
This is another repeat.
A good vehicle for a past conflict. Not suitable for a near peer high tempo adversary. Passengers "protection" = their body armour and I suspect the windscreen wont stop a 125mm round or an ATGM, let alone blast and frag from a 152mm HE round.
100% Agree.
I know quite a few people involved with the military, front line soldiers, their consensus is that they like the Jackal.
REALLY???? that is highly unlikely, for starters it looks so top heavy that it would roll in big embankenents.. also a very high up highly visible vehicle..
you do know the Russians aren't insurgent type of force right?
this type of vehicle would get wiped out so fast in a real war it would be a deathtrap
procurement are stuck in a counter insurgency mindset when it's real war they are sending guys to
What a waste of money, and potentially soldier’s lives. I’m sure they will all feel safe when driving it around Salisbury Plain.
Great, sloping windows to keep the heat in, I’m sure that has minimal effect.
No roof! So when it’s freezing sleet / rain I’m sure the driver / passenger are going to be less than comfortably concentrating on the task at hand.
This guy saying ‘there’s improved enviromental protection for the soldiers’ yes let ‘em have the wind , rain and snow in the vehicle with them!
how does a windshield keep the "cab" warm when there is no roof?
The lack of overhead protection is quite frightening!!
You obviously don’t have a clue what you are on about.
By the looks of things you ain’t got clue what you’re talking about. It’s not frightening at all. It's a versatile and agile vehicle primarily used for reconnaissance and fire support. The Jackal does provide protection for its crew, it's designed to be lightweight and highly maneuverable, which results in a lack of traditional head protection. The emphasis is on mobility and rapid response rather than heavy armor. The vehicle is equipped with other protective measures and can be modified based on operational requirements.
@@Jordon168 unless it's more maneuverable than a drone it could really use something against them. It doesn't need to survive an atgm but if any random drone can kill everyone in it then it's practically worthless.
@@regarded9702
You can say the same thing about any other military vehicle, if the vehicle can’t out maneuver a drone then it’s completely worthless. The vehicle probably does not have the same level of armor as some other vehicles, but it offers features such as a V-shaped hull to deflect blasts and armored plating to protect against small arms fire and shrapnel. The open-topped design allows for better visibility and situational awareness, but it also means that additional caution and tactics are employed to mitigate risks. Military vehicles are part of a larger strategy and are used in combination with other assets to ensure the safety and effectiveness of operations.
@@Jordon168 no, a vehicle either has to be faster than a drone, able to shoot it down or only operate near friendly assets that can do so, or able to take a hit with minimal risk.
Nobody expects their artillery to also shoot down drones, they just expect the artillery operate near friendly assets capable of doing so. That cannot be said of these vehicles, they will likely be operating on their own.
Absolute deathtrap.
Why would you service an open cabin fighting vehicle?
England must return to the leading industry that it was and is.
The Landrover morphed into something unexpected.
It looks like a rugged vehicle, but the sheer lack of crew enclosure, for protection from the sun and elements, as well as ballistic protection???????
Always had tremendous respect for the brits. There's a reason we're all speaking English now and its the current global language. Much love and respect form your humble NATO ally - Bulgaria!

@@uingaeoc3905we speak English because of America!
@@nathan40307 Where is your 'we'? English was spoken across the globe before America became a World power, after WW2. English is the World's most spoken first and second language. English is the most spoken language in Europe even excluding the UK from the equation.
1. Drones, these are side and below blast protective not above from the skies.
2. Do we have to make these anymore top heavy?
3. Do we even have the men to man these open coffins ?
4. Take a look at Ukraine, if open top is not fast like a buggy? It's getting hit easily.
Improved cooling for the engine: rather than bring hot air in from outside we blow hot air out! 🙄 Obviously the laws of thermodynamics are unknown to the designers. Any air blown out will be replaced by air coming in from the outside WHICH IS HOT when they’re at low latitudes.
It's truly exciting to hear about advancements in technology that focus on increased capabilities and, most importantly, on enhancing soldier protection. It's a significant step forward when technology is used to ensure the safety and efficiency of those who work in challenging environments. The commitment to safety and continuous improvement in such critical fields is absolutely commendable. It's always inspiring to see how innovative designs and technology can bring about such impactful changes. 🌟✨🛡
the 101 has risen like a phoenix.
No drone protection.??
A basketball hoop for grenades 🤔
Open top, what a death trap
Ofcousrse it has increased the wheelbase the massive "improvement to beaching" brought in by jackel 11
Hell no to the open cockpit
what no roof
It’s for increased situation awareness, it’s a light reconnaissance vehicle so it makes sense
Still doesn’t boast an improved roof!
Not a single word of FPV drone protection.
They are still speaking about Afghanistan and improving based on that. The next war will be with a proxy of Russia, Iran or China. And the stuff they will have will eliminate that vehicle with one hit.
Dreadful…..
Notice the mention of the ECW. That is common on British Army vehicles, it can be used to jam drones and remote controlled deivces.
What proportion of this vehicle are manufactured in the U.K. ?
Is there any weather protection like a canvas roof? Has any other country bought these?
Send them to Ukraine and see how well they get on!
10 Billion more for the Miltary 5 Billion more on pay and Recruiting
60 Billion wasted on HS2👍🏴
Thumbnail looked like a Lego truck 😂
I am very impressed this vehicle name is jackal
Pathfinders will love it
This is incredibly stupid! How does it provide "increased protection" when the soldiers are in an open air cab? Looks like it just sets them higher up to make better targets!
“Improved stealth”, we painted in camo.
One missed PK series solves the problem :D
should get rid of the jackal period
I think i would rather walk.
It's hard to survive those pesky drones in a 60 ton tank, and yet these idiots want you to go to war in a convertible.
"windscreen to keep the heat in" ***looks at open cab**...tell me the salesman has run out of benefits to pitch without telling me he has run about of benefits to pitch.
Also if you are radiating heat outwards is that not worse for enemies to spot with thermals? It looks cool...i would want one for some overlanding, but this seems something more suited to keep Gen Z's soft hands warm in winter?
It’s a drone war, soldier protection zero more like😮
Those windscreens keep the heat in the cab…….really?
He mentioned EM compatibility and lowered detection. Does this pertain to a hybrid electric option for maximum stealth, or to some sort of cable shielding?
Shut up Kelly.
@@mac2626 I know you just say that becuase you ❤
EM compatibility so that equipment on board does not interfere with each other. Lowered detection, since targets have been tracked and destroyed because of the radio signals they give off. It will be cable shielding, earthing and shielding certain parts. The basic idea has been around since the 1930s (ish) to prevent the electrics of the vehicle affecting that radio. This will be improved techniques to get the EM stuff lower.
ICE Jackals are surprisingly quiet already.
@@ptonpcThanks.
Oh please tell me it's not a HYBRID piece of over complex, unreliable, expensive garbage! 🤦
Don't fancy the gunner's chances much.
Thought it was some odd new lego truck from the thumbnail 😆
Not been looking at Ukraine drones artillery only heavy armoured vehicles have any chance
Cheeses Priced. Imagine being in one of those in a manpad/drone hit! NOOOO protection whatsoever.
Where's the roof?
It’s an optional extra.

Not sure why people are moaning. I don't think the Ukrainians would be if they received them! As explained in the video it has its place in the future soldier structure 👍
This costs £2.5M 😂
😂
Looks like one would be a sitting duck in one of these ?
Depends on what it is used for. It's not intended to go up against tanks etc. Older versions have been used very successfully.
@@ptonpc Tanks would be the least of it’s problems, this is designed for past conflicts and not future conflicts where the battlefield will be dominated by drones.
@@Dingdangdooand every vehicle can be destroyed by drone. So your point?
It’s a light reconnaissance vehicle, its primary use is as such but it’s also used in a fire support role.
They had it before as well , which they used in Afghanistan , what happened to those armor's ....
I have never heard a single person enjoy this vehicles design nor will i probably hear about it's differences
though that Internal --> External cooling engine part is interesting
The comment about the windscreen keeping heat in was funny. At least Snatch landies had a roof. This thing wouldn't last 2 mins in Ukraine.
whats the good of having this if we haven't got any troops to use it?
Any makrolon - we used in NI - slows down shrapnel etc.
Gunner s high profile.
Big boys Meccao truck .
Will the Supacat Coyote also be getting this love?
Prone for ambush no protection for its side and front.
As good as the Jackel is, I can't help but wonder if its a product of "fighting the last war".
In the age of cheap FPV drones, it makes me wonder how survivable these open vehicles are.
If one thing drones have proven, is that anyone can now be a target; atgm's due to their cost were almost always reserved for high value targets like MBT's and IFV..etc.
Drones now allow even individual soldiers to be targeted at a fraction of the cost.
Exactly. It's designed for a hot climate. Imagine driving this in a Finnish winter. 🤦

Whether voluntary or a potential conscript in future, heres your wheels boys.
open top with drones around? .....fireball and goodnight crew

No.
There’s a lot of scepticism out there about the Jackal 3, however what I found most alarming was 1.52 into the video……..run for the hills guys! the medics on the GPMG!
Where does the vehicle commander's GPMG go now?
Not enough weather protection for the crew, no good for biting cold winds in winter in Estonia, or tropical storm deluges, even a light plastic tarp top would a huge improvement surely.
Can someone fill in the gaps for me. I remember them saying poorly armoured snatch land rovers didn't provide enough troop protection from IED. Next thing I see is troops in various open top vehicles with half doors and rollcages. What happens in typical UK weather with constant wind and rain? Then boom, the powers that be sorted that with a windscreen. Did I miss something about invincible universal soldier terminator cyborgs driving these with less protection than a family saloon.
The vehicle is protected from mine-blast but the crew can easily injured by a kid with a sling shot
will they carry dragon fire in future the army needs air defence
Operates better in heat? Comes in sand colour default? What year is this? Do the guys acquiring kit for the army think we're still fighting in the middle East only?
Australian Bushmaster and Canadian Senator are probably much better and battle tested in Ukraine. They're proven survivable. We should be preparing for a war in Europe, not Mali. How could this thing be used in a Finnish winter? It's designed to fight the last war - Afghanistan. Trust the MoD procurement office to be a decade out of step. And we need something affordable so that we can get more than a miserable 240! 🤦
10 years out of step? more like 20, not surprising really when you consider this idiot seriously thinks a windshield will make a roofless cab warmer... Its unbelievable people like this can get to these positions of power.
Why not just build/buy an enclosed vehicle? Why does the British Army always get second best? Who came up with this stupid idea?
Double glazing😂😂😂❤❤❤
Is there goin to be a 8x8 mothership version?
Luv these bits of kit.🙏🙏👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🥃🥃👊👊
Looks theatre specific to desert conflict. The lack of cover in European rain sleet snow and cold against a Russian adversary could seriously erode crew resilience. Rather them than me.
