Agent Kallus: The Best Redemption In Star Wars?

- Agent Kallus from Star Wars: Rebels has an amazing redemption arc. Agent Kallus began Star Wars: Rebels as an imperial officer. Throughout the series, he realized the evils of the empire and joined the rebels. His redemption arc is one of the best in the franchise. Many like to look at Darth Vader's redemption or Kylo Ren's redemption as great examples in Star Wars, and while I think both are great, I think Agent Kallus from Star Wars Rebels may have the best Redemption Arc in Star Wars

Kallus was a cool character in Rebels. He's one of the characters I would like to see return some point in the era of 6 and 7.
Same here, I doubt though
@@thegoldman25 Maybe.....in the ahsoka show? I really hope that's the case!
I heard he’s gonna be in the Obi wan show!!!!!
@@TheTiredGaming1291 That would be pretty cool if thats the case.
@@TheTiredGaming1291 do you have a source for that?
This is why Kallus is my favorite caracter of Rebels. He's not just a bad guy, he truly think that what he do is right and this is also why "Honorable Ones" and "Throug imperial eyes" are my favorites episodes, when he realise that he's wrong and also want some friends. This remember me a very intense scene of the season 1 when Tarkin ask to the great inquisitor to kill two officers. Even if he was a bad guy Kallus was shocked ! I think it's the first time he realised that the Empire was going to far. I'm so happy that he had a so good redemption and that he go to live with Zeb and the Lassats. ^^
@@alfodr000 We are able to like Siths who make way worst. So yes he is not perfect. The Ghost crew neither. They did a lot of war crime but we like them. Let's not forget it's a war, even "good guys" make horrible things in this show.
@@alfodr000 exactly, she was her partner who did nothing bad to him wtf
@@Chopper_Ghost I want a moment when he is actually called for about that, or he actually brings it up, so bad. And I love this character, I just want him to aknowledge how messed up the people serving the Empire get when they can rejoice in the killing of loyal friends just to mess with their enemies. I like to think that scene, while on short term a victory for him, haunted him later, since he hated to see loyal imperials get killed, and although Tua effectively defected, he knew her loyalties, and could easily figure out what drove her over the edge.
He was semi convinced after surviving on the Ice moon with Zeb but you can see when he returns to the star destroyer he speaks to Admiral Constantine and he shows a complete lack of care or interest in Kallus doesn't ask him if he's alright or anything after nearly dying and clearly still suffering from injury when he is sat in his almost prison like room he realises he's on the wrong side.
I love Kallus's character. In general, I'm a sucker for redemption arcs.
same here!
Same here
same i think this arc amazing
for me its the mutton chops.
Same!
The episode where Ezra tries to get Kallus out is one of my favourites. I love how Kallus and Ezra make up a plan as they go and think they got away with it, until it is revealed that Thrawn has now figured out that Kallus is Valcrum.
I love how Rebels had forgiveness as a recurring theme. Kanan has to forgive the clones for killing his master and himself for running away, instead of helping her. Hera has to forgive her father for choosing Ryloth over the whole rebelion. Sabine has to forgive her family for chosing the empire over her and herself for creating that weapon. Zeb has to forgive Kallus for taking part in killing all Lasat on Lasan and himself for beeing the only survivor. Ezra constantly forgives people, that did him wrong and is willing to trust people like Maul, Hondo, Azmorigan or the purrgil.
Rebels is just so damn good
Wait, when did the purgil do him wrong?
Valcrum💀💀
@@thegoldman25 um, he said valcrum, it's falcrum

I love Kallus’s ex-Imperial jacket, his entire appearance once he goes ex-Imperial just looks top notch in my opinion.
me too
Same, what a huge difference his hair can make. Looked like a hero with that jacket on
man if I had to wear that silly uniform for most of my life I’d be going straight for a makeover as soon as I defected too. Had to get his drip on
I really love his line to governer price: the day i betrayed your empire was the day i finaly stoped betraying myself
Becaus it shows his motivation in one line
it's an awesome line
I think the moment Kallus sees other Lassan and learned they aren’t all gone… was like a great buren was fine from his shoulders
I was a little bit sad that in the forth season he got very forgotten. I wish he was more present.
Agreed
^^^ He has one of the most interesting arcs in Star Wars canon imo… Outside of Jedi/Sith stories we really don’t get to see any point of views other than the rebellions’ throughout SW. I think it’s easy to get enthralled with this world full of mysticism, and of course that’s the point, the myth is behind the force and the Jedi and the Sith are key parts of the stories. But I also think Star Wars serves as an interesting insight into humanity (and of course by that I mean humans and all the other species alike) and looking at the world of Star Wars from the eyes of people without strong connections to the force is extremely interesting; after all, they’re the majority of the population! I really wish we could’ve seen a lot more from Kallus’ point of view after he defected, especially after how flushed out (and badass lol) his final defection was.
He is in my top 5 characters. His redemption story is really cool. I love how he went from another imperial with some interesting backstory but then in that episode. OMG. How good it became. His redemption story is probably my favorite in Star Wars. Hope Zeb and Kallus are happy together.
They are best bros
@@thegoldman25 the best bros since han and chewie.
@@thegoldman25 lmao you wish

@@thegoldman25Rebels fans: “best bros”

It's also very telling that once he is no longer an enemy, he ceases to have a large impact on the story. He went from being a decently high-ranking Imperial who commanded star destroyers and could order men to their deaths, to being just one of the crew. He was included in briefing and strategy sessions most weren't privy to, sure, but the show didn't make him a key player anymore. His atonement was through humble service, serving as councilor and fighter when needed, like a Jedi. I would've liked to see his relationship with Zeb develop more after he defected, but the fact that a few short years earned Zeb's trust enough to bring him to Lira San is a testament to how hard Kallus worked to do good and how willing the Rebellion was to accept goodness and let go of their grudges.
What an amazing way to summarize this! Completely agree
I agree that the Kallus redemption is important. But not because one redemption is better than another. Kallus represents probably the majority of Empire forces. He thinks they're the good guys, and eventually learns their true evil. It is easy to view all people serving the Empire as disposable and one dimensional. Kallus shows people just trying to serve the greater good.
well said!
Kallus is a good example of a redemption arc done right. He fought for what he believed in to bring peace to the empire but then realised that what they were doing was wrong. Ironically kallus crashing and nearly dieing on that ice moon with zeb is probably the best thing that happened to him. He's one of the very few officers that managed to make it out. Hopefully we see more of him in the future.
By far the best redemption Arc in all of Star Wars. Hasn’t been anything close to it .
You are so right, finally someone said it! It's actually the only redemption so far that isn't too rushed in my eyes. I really liked Kallus and I'm kinda sad that they almost didn't use him in season 4. It'd be great to see him in other projects again.
I hope we see more of him in the future, thanks for watching!
Crosshair from Bad Batch has an AMAZING redemption story too but I also like Agent Kallus’s as well.
It always made me so sad when the ghost crew would make jokes at the expense of Kallus in season 4. Like when Rex and kallus are left on the ghost and Rex says he’s the captain kallus is like “I’ve commanded star destroyers, why should I not be in charge?” And Rex just says that he answered his own question and it broke my heart when they showed kallus’ face 😭😭. Obviously it was a joke but it implied that because of his past he can NEVER be trusted
We need more Kallus!
i think that was a joke about how many star destroyers the rebels have blown up saying its not much to have driven one
@@Anonymous-ks1pn It may have been, but I don't think that's how Kallus took it.

Kallus is really one of my top 5 favorite characters in star wars. So well done, and delivered with top-notch grace from the VA. Amazingly done
In my eyes, Kallus is probably the most honorable character in all of Star Wars... 👀
he's up there
From the moment he walked on screen I knew that he would have some form of an arc but never did I think it would be this amazing
I didn't watch the series until season 3 aired so i dont remember my first thoughts
Agreed! Kallus is truly one of my favorite characters. His development was proper!
i love this cahracter
There's also another line at the end of The Honorable Ones. Kallus tells Zeb at the end that he never intended for the Lasat to be massacred. He gave the orders to attack, but he never realized what using those weapons used would do.
“It appears that he and Zeb have a bit of a bromance going.”
Slash fiction writers: *typing furiously*
Even though I’m not a massive fan of Rebels, Kallus has got to be the best character there yet. I’ve always loved his personality and mannerisms. He give more humanity to the Imperial officers, rather than just showing them as emotionless cogs to the machine. Every time Kallus is with the other Imperials, he always shows a aura of sympathy to the Rebels, a phantom of regret for being an Imperial.
THANK YOU! This whole character arc was superb. I admit it, I fly for the Empire and have been a Boots On The Ground Old Fan since '77, (so, yes, I'm old. Doesn't stop me from putting on a flight suit.) and I'm proud to say that several of the "Clone Wars" and "Rebels" crew are good friends, but YOU just nailed one of the most fantastic turnabouts I have ever seen. I loved Kallus as an ISB Agent, and loved him more as a Rebel. The end of this episode was utterly in your face, Zeb is welcomed with relief and love back to The Ghost, Kallus gets a quick nod from Constantine and enters his quarters devoid of any family, friends or decorations -- except for one small rock. And then they handled his transition to Fulcrum and his escape to the Rebels with some great writing. He is right up there with that moment when Rex loses it and goes off on the "WHEN did WE become the BAD GUYS?!" speech. Exactly. I'm convinced the Rogue One Rebels were largely recruited from Fulcrum. Former Imperials who would know protocol like the back of their hand, and oh, those hands have been dirty and still are. I think it's even more backed by the opportunity the two crews had to weave the stories together, to hear "General Syndulla" paged in the hangar and to see Chopper go whizzing by and the Ghost at the battle of Scarif. Kallus fits there. He's a man who first and foremost has ironclad morals. He's a spectacular officer. And he sees the writing on the wall. He simply became my favorite character, long before "The Honorable Ones" and I am so proud to be able to sit around with a great group of friends who made this happen (and yes they give me cr*p about it, and I happily give it back) Agent Kallus/Captain Alexsnder is a great character, a man who doesn't find redemption, he makes it on his own. (oh, and we need more loth-cats)
Thank you so much for watching! i love Kallus too!
@@thegoldman25 He's impossibly well written, and a few of the "Clone Wars" and "Rebels" writers are friends (I work in tv). I'm, yep, a Boomer Fan, but I fell hard for Kallus, long before he made his move to the Rebels. He's a great character and he's a great example of morality driving redemptions. He's one more character to give back up to Rex's speech and Miggs Mayfield's payback to the officer that sent his unit to Star Wars "Pork Chop" hill (and yeah, I still get razzed by the Rebels for having a crush on a cartoon. Which I hope changes soon as we're seeing more and more of The Ghost crew make their live action debuts). You did a great job and a great break down on this. I really enjoyed it.
One small detail you can see from his and zeb’s episode to his reveal as fulcrum, is that he’s trying to make his fellow imperials lighten up. Kallus believed that the empire was necessary to create order but he realizes that the order they want to make is absolutely wrong so he tries to change that first.
Even Steven Blum ships it lol. He said that he knew he wanted them to end up together and i think that's beautiful.
i absolutely loved his story. I watched Rebels recently for the first time, and with a friend and the whole first season i got so mad whenever he'd show up, and IMMEDIATELY after the Honorable Ones i was TERRIFIED that he was gonna die. lol. that lonely scene on the ISD was enough to tug my heartstrings and i adored kallus after that.
Great video and great summation.
He does?! I love when VAs talk about stuff like that.
Kallus' arc is really similar to Reiny's arc in Ben 10 Alien Force. Both start out as commanders in a totalitarian regime and through having to survive together with one of the heroes it changes their outlooks for the better. And Both become the key player in ending the conflict they were a part of. Kallus had more screen time but Both completely changed the outcome of a war.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that was reminded of that Ben 10 episode when he talked about Zeb and Kallus needing to work together to survive in a strange new world.
I never watched Ben 10
One of the things I like about how Kallus was handled is how economical yet complete the writing is. With just a few episodes where he's a focus character and a handful of other scenes you come away with a very believable and grounded redemption story. The writers had faith that viewers didn't need to have him over-explained, while also not being obnoxiously vague. I want more Kallus not because I have a lot of unanswered questions, but just because I like the character!
Kallus did terrible things from a place of fear and ignorance --> he justifies it to himself and convinces himself the Empire is fair and orderly --> he gets forced by circumstances to reconsider his actions and the Empire's --> he doesn't like what he sees --> he takes responsibility and works to atone --> the people he hurt see his sincere atonement and he earns their forgiveness.
It's driven almost entirely by his own decisions, which IMO is far more satisfying and believable (and a much better moral lesson) than redemption arcs where another character has to do most of the work to convince the person they're in the wrong.
Great Video! Kallus went from a standard ISB Agent to a Very Complex Character and Eventually, A Hero Of The Rebellion. And it made Him One of My Favorite Characters in All Of Star Wars!!! His Redemption Arc is Amazing!!! And His Relationship with Zeb is One Of My Favorites!
Kallus has one of the top 5 forms of redemption I’ve ever seen. Star Wars is great at showing that nobody is beyond redemption.
It's a great arc!

Same here. After the the episode with him and zeb and the many hints at his redemption, I started to like him.
Agreed. Aside from Revan and Vader, Kallus has the best redemption in all of Star Wars, I think.
That's good writing for you! Dave Filoni is a genius.
I read garlic imperial at first lol
I love your observation that past redemption stories in Star Wars haven't really tackled the theme of forgiveness. I've never thought of that, but you're absolutely correct. It's weird to say, but Kallus' arc is easily the most realistic and well told redemptive arc in Star Wars.
However, I would argue that Kylo Ren's arc is actually about forgiveness as well, just in a a different way. His turn to the light is all about him learning to forgive himself, and to realize that he's already been forgiven in the eyes of those who love him. That's what that scene between him and Han in TROS is all about. It's not as realistic a depiction of redemption as Kallus' arc is, since Ben Solo truly did nothing to earn that forgiveness, but it is in keeping with the themes of family and the unbreakable bond that it represents that run throughout the Star Wars saga. It's also in keeping with the themes of empathy that run throughout the sequel trilogy, which I believe you discussed in another video.
You make some great points, thank you for watching!
I hope Kallus gets brought to live action.

If someone time traveled back in time to 2014 and told me Kallus would be redeemed I would not believe them

I love redemption arcs like kallus, because it shows that people can change and can be redeemed.
“Best redemption in Star Wars?”
Vader: Am I a joke to you?
The only other redemption stories that Star Wars has to offer. Are when force power hungry maniacs turn back to the light side after an extended amount of time being knee deep in blood and death. So, I do kinda hate to say this. But Agent Kallus's gradual turn to the rebellion is probably the best redemption story this saga has to offer. Or at the very least its a redemption story. You see nearly every single step needed for a proper redemption arc.
You are not wrong

I'm loving these Rebels videos that you're doing. Also, Kallus is in my top ten SW characters

Another factor that adds weight to the ending of 'The Honorable Ones' is that Kallus apparently wasn't even recovered by the Empire. Off-screen, Kallus was picked up by a passing independent trader, as the Empire had exhausted its allocated time and resources for finding him.
And people say this was a bad show 😑
The only thing I hate about Kallus is how the fandom calls him daddy.

Ah, Zuko and Kallus, probably the best redemptions in tv
Zuko is definitely 1
He didn’t defect because he saw a rebellion overthrowing the Empire, he def effected because he saw loyalty and friendship that he didn’t find in the Empire
It’s really a show worth watching. You see more of the effect the Empire had on others and how the Rebellion got as big as you see in the movies.
Great characters and even some backstory’s for some characters that are already known and loved (like Leia and Wedge for example)

the way that kallus talked treated pryce in the finnaly is the way that finn should of have been treating the other stormtroopers in the sequal trilogy
Fantastic video! This is also a really good look into how someone who's spent their whole life being manipulated by the Empire, and was likely indoctrinated into it at a young age, has broken free.
I love Kallus' story, and I'm very happy to see how he had to repent for his mistakes too. His crimes weren't forgiven, but he became a far better person, and ultimately chose the right path. - The La'saat probably understood his choice, and forgave him because of that

He also killed one of his stormtrooper just because he pissed him off. Felt strange to me that he redeemed himself. In comparison Zuko had to learn that fear is not a good way of ruling.
I think Kallus only had to understand the empire was crushing everyone and that he was alone in it wich is way less redeeming in my opinion.
I imagine while with those people he just has the most appreciation possible everytime he sees a child running by. In the same vein as Avatar this is why I don't mind these animated shows. Now that my kids are getting old enough it's cool chilling with them and going through all these good shows.
The thing about redemption is that it isn't about how much good or bad you do, it's about what's in your heart when you die and will be in there until you die.
Bro I've seen ATLA tons of times over but respect for you calling spoilers still. It's definitely not a show that you want spoiled. 🙂
This is a Star Wars channel, it would be rude of me to assume people have watched something that isn’t Star Wars
cool that you singled that out. We need to understand that forgiveness is what makes the good guys, _good._ Not just crushing the bad guys. And for forgiveness to happen, the 'enemy' must have a path of atonement to complete his redemption.
Saving what we love... the person beneath the mask.
you make a great point. I love that quote
Loved the redemption of Kallus. When he joined the Rebels he found something to truly fight for. That fight was for freedom.
I feel like his arc should have been fleshed out more. While "The Honorable Ones" does a good job of showing Kallus what's missing from his life with the Empire, his change from Imperial Agent who gloated to Zeb to his face about how he wiped out his people to Rebel Spy was way too quick IMO. I know they try to immediately make him less vile by him admitting he overexaggerated his role in the Lasaat genocide, but it just kind of feels like a cop-out. I would have maybe had one or two more episodes featuring him to show his inner conflict more before revealing the new Fulcrum.
A couple of episodes in season 4 where he plays a bigger role would have been welcome too. I legit didn't recognise him when he turned up in some episodes because he was kind of a supporting/background role by that point.
I agree
He started off as a guy who kicked one of his own men off a support beam for mocking him to getting disillusioned with the Empire's callous tactics and then joining the rebels after he had to get picked up by a smuggler. [Might have not been a smuggler but I don't remember exact.]
it was a great arc
Filoni is doing more for the Star Wars franchise than anyone could imagine.
More shit, to put a name to it
Gold man: Saying that Agent Kallus has the best redemption arc in star wars

Wait, potential? You mean they aren't married?

Oh, absolutely the best redemption in Star Wars. That time spent with Zeb stranded on that ice moon was a real eye-opening experience for him. At the end of that episode, I knew he was eventually going to defect from the Empire and join the rebellion.
People say Vader's redemption is one of the best in cinematic history? I'm not sure... it's kind of simplistic. The moment didn't feel forced, but there still wasn't much conflict in Vader until that final scene.
i lowkey agree
@@thegoldman25 Kylo kinda feels like an upgrade from Vader in that regard, that conflict defines his character for the whole triology.
Meanwhile, the concept of Vader maybe having some good in him doesn't exist until late into the third film. Almost like those movies weren't planned or something...
I also love just how long the arc was. It wasn't just like some 3-parter, it was a developing and long arc and had a lot of details like the others not trusting immediately and such.
He is one of my favourite SW characters. Comparison to Zuko is so good! I think you could argue that Vader and Kylo's redemption was motivated by family ties as opposed to them truly realising their actions have been evil. Especially within the context of just the movies. But Kallus has the courage to admit to himself he misjudged Zeb, and then allowed himself to question just how much he had misjudged the rebels, the empire, and everything he knew to be true. Then he doesn't just decide to run away from the empire, but he decided to do something about it and puts everything on the line for the rebellion. I also love that his story reflects what we can imagine is a great handful of imperial agents/workers turned rebels. I think it also comments so well on how brain washed someone can become by authoritarian states. Vader and Kylo were consumed by grief or manipulated at a young a vulnerable age. But Kallus would been very young toward the end of the clone wars and been really indoctrinated into the empires ideology. So to see him question himself and break away from that is a very powerful story in SW I think.
Bro your channel is underrated
Glad you think so!
Kallus is the Superior Ginger. Hux wishes he was him
My biggest gripe with Kallus' redemption is that we barely get any of Good Kallus in Season 4. I'm not a big fan of the Lothal stuff in Season 4 in general and I would've much prefered to have a story with Rex and Kallus, two characters with interesting histories with the Empire, in between the main boring plot stuff.
straight facts, it's kinda the same problem I have with Ben Solo's redemption, we barely get to see the redeemed version of the character
I agree. I'd love some kind of spin off to focus on Kallus and other characters
Alexander Kallus in The Bad Batch, Andor and Ashoka seasons 2-3(Mandalorian season 4)

This guy was everything general hux couldn't live up to.
Kallus Redemption was good, but Kallus change of style was better.
I like his new hair much better
I swear I cannot take Kallus seriously when he has that cheese grater on his head.
You missed him talking about how he got the bo-rifle, basically being in a honourable fight with a lasat and the lasat gave it up. He discussed that with Zeb on the ice moon and that helped shed some light on his character
keep up the rebels content
Absolutely
How do you not have more subs this vid is amazing

Kallus has a great redemption arc. Star wars has a lot of redemption arcs for the sake of the plot. His is actually believable
Yes! I've always hated redemption throught death. And the forgiveness aspect of kallus's redemption makes it and him one of my favorites
He was a hero with that jacket on.
Hope they give us more Zeb & Kallus bromance in Ahsoka s2. You know damn well everyone’s coming back now that Thrawns entered the ring again.
Honestly, his redemption arc might just be my favorite since a fiery lad named Zuko.
Kallus' even being redeemed at all is almost more impressive, as he never had an Iroh-figure who encouraged him.
Even though i think disney plays too safe with rebels making it too kid friendly. Even more so than george. Rebels has some good writing through its main characters, especially kallus. I was rooting for him to switch sides. Ever since he and zeb got stuck on that ice planet. I hope we also see kallus in live action but it wouldnt be the same without the voice actor. His voice matters alot
Zuko's redemption will forever be #1 in my book. Kallus is 2nd in my personal opinion.
Zuko is such a top tier character
The scene of Kallus returning to dark, empty bunk in the Empire is echoed (yes pun intended) in The Bad Batch where Crosshair also does the same during his long journey out of following the Empire's orders.
Hot take: Vader's redemption really wasn't done all that well. It was hastily shoehorned into Return of the Jedi at the last minute when George Lucas decided he wanted this to be a story about family or something. I mean, it's nice and all, but, like with Ben Solo's arc, it needed to be set up better. Instead, In Return of the Jedi, Vader just all of the sudden has doubts about this whole space Nazi thing he signed up for.
I can understand this
Ben solo doesn’t have a ark he’s bad then he’s good. Vader began as a slave on a desert planet, then he became a slave to warrior monks, then he became a slave to Palpatine but at the very end he saw an opportunity to atone for all his sins by saving his son and all of the rebels. When Luke found out Vader was his father his entire narrative was to prove their was still light in Anakin because of the force Luke could sense the conflict within him. Anakin never wanted things to go the way they did he never wanted to be Palpatine’s pawn we know this because his plan was to overthrow Palpatine and rule the galaxy with Padmé but Obi wan took all of that away from him. His prosthetics were replaced with robotic ones this is so if Anakin were to ever challenge Palpatine he wouldn’t be much of a threat because he’s weak to force lightning now. In the end he realized he became what he sought out to destroy so he sacrificed himself but not as a slave as a “free man”.
@@UCU_BT That's all from the prequels, and it adds to his character, but his whole redemption as Darth Vader needs to stand on its own.
@@UCU_BT I appreciate that you're able to see all of that in Vader's story, but I think that's mostly stuff you've added in your head. I mean, first of all, you're retroactively applying Anakin's story in the prequels as a part of Vader's story in the originals. I'm just talking about the originals as they stand on their own. Second of all, nothing that you said really explains how Vader's arc was well told. You just sort of gave me your interpretation of what you think his internal conflict was, which is fine, but it's not really what I'm talking about. The fact of the matter is that Vader was straight up evil in the first two movies, and then randomly in Jedi he's like "No, son, it's too late for me. I must obey my master." when he previously should no signs of remorse for his evilness. Things are left a little uncertain at the end of Empire, but I don't think it was a strong enough set-up for the 180 degree turn we got in Jedi.
good point, but the last shot of vader walking off after the millennium falcon escapes seems to show some change in him
Him joining the febels acually suprised me
I expected him to be killed by zeb at some point
But damn is arc was great
It was fantastic
